HERMISTON HISTORY
CHRIS HULL
Retired special education teacher
When and why did you move to Hermiston?
I moved to Hermiston in fall of 1972. I had a teach-
ing job in Stanfield, but lived in Hermiston. In fall of
1989, I got a teaching job in Hermiston.
What is your favorite place to eat in Hermiston?
When (my friend and I) taught, we had short peri-
ods of time for lunch, so when we retired, we said we
were going to have a leisurely lunch every day. We
go to lots of different places and mix it up, but I like
Hales, Nookies, Shiki Hibachi Sushi.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Travel, read and I’m a CASA (Court-Appointed Spe-
cial Advocate).
What surprises you about Hermiston?
How fast it’s grown. But in the beginning, just
how friendly it was and the inclusiveness of this
community.
What was the last book you read?
I am currently reading the whole series of Sue Graf-
ton books.
What app or website do you use most other
than Facebook or Google?
Weather app.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you
go?
I’d love to go to Europe. My father’s family are Ger-
mans who came from Russia, and my mother’s family
is from the U.K. My dream is to go on a cruise that’s
100 days, and goes around the world.
What is the funniest thing that’s happened to
you?
Recently, we went to Boston for a CASA conference.
After a long day of traveling, we got to the hotel late.
We got up to the room, and the door was about a foot
wide. I’m an optimist, so I tried, but there was no way
I could get my wheelchair through that.
What is one of your goals for the next 12
months?
Redo some landscaping at my house.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Probably my son. He’s going to be 35. He was an
only child, but he’s married and has three kids — my
grandchildren. He’s a great father.

JUNE 15, 1993
Port of Umatilla com-
missioners met last week,
approving a deal to swap
some Port property in
McNary for other industrial
land and cash. The agree-
ment between the Port,
Trust for Public Lands and
the Confederated Tribes of
the Umatilla Indian Res-
ervation calls for the Port
to deed some 480 acres to
TPL. In exchange the Port
will receive some 80 acres
south of Highway 730 and
$20,000. Property clo-
sure on the first phase of
the complex land trade is
expected this week.
Once the Port and TPL
have smoothed their bound-
aries, TPL will sell the for-
mer Conforth Ranch prop-
erty they own and the acres
from the Port to the Bonne-
ville Power Administration.
Bonneville will then start
an environmental assess-
ment of the property, which
will probably take about 18
months to complete. The
environmental assessment
is a necessary requirement
for a federal land sale. If
the environmental assess-
ment looks good, then BPA
will deed the property to
the Confederated Tribes.
The Tribes plan to turn a
small part of the roughly
2,800 acres into an indus-
trial park while leaving the
largest part of the property
as a natural and cultural
resource area.
The land trade will leave
the Port of Umatilla with
about 800 acres of land for
industrial use. That prop-
erty will be concentrated
north of Highway 730 —
near the Columbia River
— with some acres south
of the highway. Tribal plan-
ners hope to bring about
175 acres, adjacent to the
Port property, into indus-
trial use. The Port of Uma-
tilla is also looking to the
land swap as leverage to
settle a longstanding debate
with the state concerning
the zoning of the McNary
Port property.

Out of the spirit of the
Old West is evolving a
riding club in Hermiston.
Townspeople from here
and surrounding towns,
ranchers and Umatilla Ord-
nance Depot employees are
enthusiastic over the pros-
pect of long horseback
rides and camp cooking.
For the past two Sun-
days, persons interested
have gathered with horses
at the USO club in Herm-
iston, and have ridden,
talked, picnicked, and rid-
den horseback on the fair-
grounds track. Organization
of the club is progressing
rapidly, and the only qual-
ification for joining is that
you like riding horseback
about as well as anything
you ever did.
Since as yet, the riding
club is an unnamed baby,
members have decided to
offer a $25 War Bond as a
prize for the name selected.
If you have a brain-storm-
ing idea, the bars are down,
so come along and join the
outfit.

he told while here from that
town recently. But Kings-
ley is a good sport, never-
theless, and he went us one
better by giving the editor
of the Tribune at Culver a
V, presumably to give us a
good scoring in his paper
— and he is the fellow we
now have to deal with.
Space won’t permit us to
go into a lengthy article to
set that editor right in order
that he may hereafter know
how to elucidate through
the columns of his paper
on matters piscatorial. We
would like to imagine him,
as one of the fraternity,
otherwise, but this we can-
not do until he has “read
up” on fish and fish stories
more thoroughly.
He takes us to task for
having mentioned speckled
beauties as having inhab-
ited the waters of Crooked
River, and says that we
should have said Red-
sides or Rainbow trout. We
admit now we stretched the
truth a little there, but since
reading his arraignment we
doubt not that we should
have omitted all three of
the above species of fish
and substituted “suckers”
therefor.
