STATE TRACK & FIELD
TRACK
continued from Page A1
freshman and a sophomore.
Rohrman was the only one
that had been on the relay
team throughout the season,
and only Daniel Faaeteete
had raced at Hayward Field
before.
The team put together
a time of 44.55 for a 10th
place finish. It wasn’t the
start Rohrman had hoped
for, but he wasn’t disap-
pointed either.
In fact, he didn’t have
much time to think about
that race as he was due up
for the 110-meter hurdles.
“I just take it one race
at a time,” Rohrman said.
“I just think about my first
race then when I run that
race, I’m a 110 hurdler then
I’m a 300 hurdler then I’m
a 4x4 runner. I just kind of
go through the mental states
and go along with it. It’s a
totally different world.”
The compartmentaliza-
tion helped in the end. Rohr-
man ran a blistering 14.09
seconds in the 110-meter
hurdles for first place and a
new state meet record.
He followed it up with
a second place finish in the
300-meter hurdles (39.22)
and ran the first leg of the
4x400-meter relay where
the Bulldogs finished ninth
(3:30.94).
“Everybody sees the
highs of this year,” Rohrman
said. “I knew this year was
going to be a good year. It’s
unreal.”

Hermiston’s Tyler Rohrman gets ready to race a preliminary heat of the 5A 110-meter high hurdles during the OSAA State
Track and Field championships Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene. Rohrman took home the state championship Saturday.
Girls take third
Rohrman wasn’t the only
Bulldog to take home some
hardware. The Hermiston
girls track and field team fin-
ished third overall with 50
points to cap off two suc-
cessful days.
“I was looking at the
schedule today and I was
like, ‘We have a girl or mul-
tiple girls in every single
race except one that was on
the track today,’” head coach
Emilee Strot said. “It was so
impressive, we’ve never had
that happen before.”
The 4x100-meter relay
was facing a fast squad from
Bend in the second heat of
the timed finals. The Bull-
dogs finished just a cou-
ple of seconds behind Lava
Bears and took second place
in 49.05. Scout Reagan
rounded out the top five in
12.49 in the girls 100-meter
dash. Elsa Torres finished in
sixth place in the 400-meter
dash after clocking 1:00.13.
Madison Wilson fin-
ished second in the girls
100-meter hurdles. She was
stride-for-stride with this
year’s state champion, Quin
Fraley of Summit, and was
edged out of the title by just
seven one-hundredths of a
second. She returned for the
300-meter hurdles, where

for fifth place in the 5A girls 100-meter dash. Right: Hermiston’s Elsa Torres and Grace Toney, of Bend, run shoulder to shoulder
toward the finish line of the 5A girls 4x400 relay Saturday. Toney edged out Torres as the Bulldogs got sixth place.
she placed fifth (46.70).
In Amanda Nygard’s
first appearance at state, the
freshman rounded out the
top eight in the girls 800-
meter run (2:23.86). Isaac
Sanchez ran in the boys 800
meters before joining the
Bulldogs’ 4x400-meter relay
team. Sanchez placed fourth
with a time of 1:57.53.
The girls 4x400-me-
ter relay team competed in
one of the last events of the
day. Thanks to the efforts
of anchor, Torres, the Bull-
dogs finished in sixth place
(4:07.70). Hermiston was
falling behind at certain
points in the race, but after
making the last turn Torres
kicked it up a gear to close
the gap between the Bull-
dogs and fifth-place Bend.
Stephanie Miears helped
the team round out the top
three by competing in both
the discus and shot put.
Hermiston’s Stephanie
Miears placed fourth in the
girls discus and shot put.
In the discus throw,
Miears was up against a
tough field with top throws
hailing from Summit, Sandy
and Bend. She fared well
amongst the competition
and improved throughout
her six attempts to record a
new personal record (PR) of
124-1, which was good for
fourth place.
Miears
then
turned
around to compete in the
shot put, where she was
the top seed with a mark
of 41-05.00. However, she
matched her discus fin-
ish and claimed fourth after
throwing for 38-08.50.
On the boys side, Herm-
iston senior Joey Gutierrez
earned one of two wild card
spots in the javelin throw
and in only his third appear-
ance on the runway, earned
seventh place with a throw
of 158-08.
Hermiston’s
Jackson
Morgan made it onto the
podium in the high jump
after a clearance of 6-02.00.
Carson Wrathall was one of
the last Bulldogs competing
in field events. He finished
ninth in the boys pole vault
(13-00.25).
Field events
Hermiston’s
Jazlyn
Romero was competing
against Pendleton’s Eman-
uela Casadei and Summit’s
Haley Smith in the girls jav-
elin throw.
It took Casadei all of one
throw to secure her state
title, leaving the rest of the
throwers in amazement and
also playing catch-up. Her
mark of 145-04 was a two-
foot improvement from her
district championship throw.
“I was amazed by her
first throw,” Romero said.
“I really was. I told myself
I have to come back, and
I have to come back and
throw farther and I did but it
wasn’t as big as her throw.”
Romero’s best throw
came on her sixth and final
attempt. The Bulldog was
coming off a huge PR in last
week’s district meet and, in
her first appearance at Hay-
ward Field, stepped up to the
challenge.
A couple of times
Romero dipped back into
the 130s, but quick consults
with her coaching staff and a
few mock throws to the side
of the runway loosened up
the first-timer.
“After every throw I
come over to the fence and
talk to coach (Emilee) Strot
and coach (Jerod) Muns-
terman and coach (David)
Faaeteete,” Romero said,
“and coach Faaeteete said
‘Have fun,’ and that’s what
it’s all about, and then coach
Strout said, ‘Last one, best
one.’ So, I went out there
and did it.”
Hermiston’s
Michelle
Coombs still holds the state
record in the javelin, set in
2008, at 155-11.
The reigning Colum-
bia River Conference dis-
trict champion in the boys
discus and shot put took the
field Friday as well. AJ Fer-
nandez was up against some
tough competition in the dis-
cus — the first of two events
he competed in. Fernan-
dez made it through his first
three attempts with a new
PR of 148-08, but by the
time the preliminaries were
complete the leader threw
for a whopping 186-02.
Fernandez couldn’t quite
catch up but again improved
on his personal best 151-02
to round out the top five.
The top mark was thrown by
Sandy’s Dayne Gordien.
In shot put, Fernandez
entered in a better posi-
tion. His qualifying mark of
50-07.00 gave him the No.
7 seed out of a field a 12.
In discus, he fell below the
middle of the pack with a
No. 5 seed.
This time around, Fer-
nandez was just shy of his
PR and his mark of 50-04.25
was good for fifth place. The
throw, along with his mark
in discus, was his second
best of the season.
