GREAT WEATHER, COMPETITION
Lady Bulldogs nearly
catch Kamiakin at
Kiwanis Invite

H
ERMISTON — Mother Nature
has not been kind for local track
and field athletes this spring.
Heavy rain showers wiped
out a meet in Pendleton to begin the
season, and a mixture of gray clouds,
cold temperatures, light rains and high,
steady winds have been a constant visi-
tor for nearly every meet of the season.
However, on Friday afternoon, the
weather was finally on the athletes’
side.
Blue skies and sunshine covered
Hermiston High’s Kennison Field
and temperatures sat in the low 70s
for Hermiston’s annual Kiwanis Twi-
light Invitational, which was a pleasant
sight to the athletes competing.
“It was a big stress reliever,” Pend-
leton’s Edwin Linares said of the
weather. “It makes me hope there are
going to be more sunny days ahead
and less rainy ones. I was getting tired
of the rainy season, having to bring
sweats every where.”
Ten schools — Hermiston, Pend-
leton, Kamiakin, Chiawana, Hanford,
The Dalles, La Grande, Baker, Moses
Lake, Mac-Hi — and hundreds of ath-
letes littered the grounds of Kennison
Field for the meet, which brought a lot
of good competition.
It was another strong performance
for the Hermiston Bulldogs’ girls
team, which battled for first place all
day long before settling into second
place with 144 points — just 20 points
behind first-place Kamiakin.
The shining star for the Bulldogs
was the rock-solid 4x100-meter relay
team of Scout Reagan, Madison Wil-
son, MaKaylee Young and Elsa Torres.
The foursome finished in first with
their best time of the season and finally
broke the 50-second threshold with a
49.01. It’s the third time in four meets
that those four have finished in first
place.

Sorey, Currin fare well at Hermiston
Intermountain High
School Rodeo Association
hosted its annual event
HERMISTON HERALD
HERMISTON — The Inter-
mountain High School Rodeo Asso-
ciation hosted its annual rodeo at
the Farm-City Pro Rodeo arena in
Hermiston, beginning Friday and
lasting through Sunday afternoon.
Among the top of the leaderboard
were a few local competitors includ-
ing Heppner’s Jacee Currin, who
had the busiest and most success-
ful weekend as she finished sixth or
better in five different events. Cur-
rin began the weekend with a sec-
ond-place finish Friday in girls cut-
ting with 141 points, only three
points behind Haines’ Samantha
Kerns with 144 points. Currin then
finished first in breakaway roping
(2.65 seconds), second in goat tying
(7.81 seconds), fourth in barrel rac-
ing (18.029 seconds), and sixth in
pole bending (21.49 seconds).
Pendleton’s Trent Sorey had a
productive weekend for the Inter-
mountain boys. He soared to a win
in the tie-down roping with a time
of 9.74 seconds — with nearly
a two-second cushion on second
place. Sorey also finished fourth in
team roping as the header with heel-
ing teammate Zane Taylor in 11.17
seconds.
Both Currin and Sorey were
in the top 11 of all-around stand-
ings heading into the weekend,
with Currin 11th in the girls stand-
ings and Sorey sixth in the boys.
So both competitors’ performances
this weekend will surely give them
a boost.
Also for Intermountain, Hep-
pner’s Jaiden Mahoney finished
in second place in barrel racing
with a time of 17.886 seconds. Her
time was just one-tenth of a second
behind Kerns for first place.
