COMMUNITY
THREE MINUTES WITH ...
HERMISTON HISTORY
KAREN PRIMMER
Communications Sergeant at Umatilla
County Sheriff’s Office - Dispatch
When and why did you move to Hermiston?
We moved here in summer of 1976. My dad’s job with
Frito Lay got transferred here and my mom went
to work at Hinkle Railyard. She was one of the first
female brakemen hired at Hinkle.
What is your favorite place to eat in Hermiston?
Kobe Hibachi Sushi - when it first opened, we were
eating there about once a week.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Doug and I like to Cosplay and attend Comicons. We
have attended Seattle Emerald City Comicon about
seven or eight times, and Portland, Rose City Com-
icon about four or five times now. We would love to
attend more, including the big one in San Diego, CA.
What surprises you about Hermiston?
While the city has changed since I moved here in
1976, the small town-know your neighbor feeling
hasn’t, despite the fast-paced growth, which is excel-
lent to see. I love that about our community.
What was the last book you read?
It is a Steampunk Genre book in a series called The
Girl and the Clockworks Cat (book one) and The Girl
and the Clockwork Conspiracy (book two), by Nikki
McCormack. Great reading.
What app or website do you use most often
other than Facebook or Google?
Trip Check and Accuweather. Driving back and forth
to Pendleton, these two apps are the bomb for keep-
ing update on road conditions all year long.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you
go?
My dream vacation is to visit Australia and New Zea-
land for a month. I want to travel the entire area,
including the train trips available, and do a boat div-
ing trip there as well. The only drawback I know of is
they have 7 to 10 of the most deadly snakes. I HATE
SNAKES. But I’m still going.
What is the funniest thing that’s happened to
you?
I’d have to say, Doug forgetting how to sing to me
at our wedding? He’d been practicing for weeks
and was great. The time came, music cued up, he
turned to look at me and... the poor guy had the deer
in the headlight look. Any thoughts related to any-
thing, including his own name, was GONE. I even
tried to help him out by telling him to sing anything.
Still nothing from him. Suddenly I start laughing hys-
terically and couldn’t stop. I was promptly followed
in the infectious laughter by all our 200-plus friends
and family. Even the judge who was marrying us
couldn’t stop laughing. It was hilarious and took a
bit to get the ceremony back on track, but we made it.

Campus Life is one
step closer to reopening its
youth center. The group, led
by Rod Bragato, put money
down on property across
the street from Hermis-
ton High School where a
large metal building will be
constructed.
Right now, the only
thing standing in their way
is the $23,000 needed to
construct the building.
“When we had our youth
center open, we averaged
80 kids a night, so we know
they want a place to go,”
Bragato said. “This cen-
ter will be a reality, we just
need people to support it.”
On Wednesday, May
19, the national Heart-N-
Soul Concert Tour wil stop
in Hermiston featuring
such artists as ETW (End
Time Warriors), E-Rock,
JC Crew and The Dynamic
Twins. All proceeds from
the tickets will go to the
youth center.
• Two girls attending
Armand Larive Junior High
were handed seven days of
out-of-school suspension
for bringing two pellet guns
to school.
The incident, involving a
13-year-old and a 14-year-
old, happened Thursday,
said school principal Shan-
non Gorham. The pel-
let guns were found in the
girls’ bags, and the Hermis-
ton police were called in to
deal with the problem.
Hermiston police offi-
cer Doug Smith reported
that one of the girls has
been taken into custody for
possession of stolen prop-
erty. He said the second girl
would face the same charge.

Groundbreaking cere-
monies for the additional
nine holes to be added to
McNary Golf Course were
Monday, with Mrs. Ursel
Hiatt, widow of the late
president of McNary Golf
Club, turning the first spade
of earth to get the construc-
tion underway. Threat-
ening clouds in an other-
wise fair day and gusts of
wind slightly interrupted
the ceremony, but the sun
appeared before it was over.

who assisted in the project.

The first organized oppo-
sition to opening Umatilla
County Japanese-Ameri-
can farm labor during the
coming harvest seasons
was reported in Pendle-
ton Wednesday when the
county court announced
that it had received an offi-
cial notification from the
Hermiston Farm Bureau.
The letter stated that
this organization opposed
throwing Umatilla County
open to any Japanese labor.

Fourth Assistant Postmas-
ter General. The first exam-
ination to which women
will be eligible will take
place April 27 in all sec-
tions where there are vacan-
cies and where men carri-
ers are unattainable. This
is the first time since 1911
that women have been eli-
gible for such posts, except
in rare cases as substitutes.
Previous to that time
the service was opened to
women for a short time, but
while their work was satis-
factory, climatic conditions
in the Northwest were such
as to make it inadvisable to
use them generally and the
privilege of examination
was denied.
• The Hermiston city
council passed an ordinance
to extend the irrigation sys-
tem to the residents of the
Newport addition. With the
passing of the ordinance a
new irrigation district has
been created, which will
hereafter be known as Dis-
trict No. 2.

have been listed.
Heading the list is the
purchase of the Thompson
Drug Store by Sam Moore
and Glenn Ripley from Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Thomp-
son who have operated the
concern for the past several
years.
The Igloo is also in new
hands. Guy Cronk, who last
week announced that he
planned to open a cafete-
ria, decided at the last min-
ute that he didn’t want to
go into the restaurant busi-
ness. Information now is
that John Henry Nye and
Sam Nye have leased the
firm and will operate the
bar side, sub-leasing the
lunch counter. Still another
change finds Vern Daugh-
tery’s Barber Shop moving
to the Igloo Inn from the
Hermiston Hotel.
