CLEAN SWEEP
HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A15
Hermiston residents ditched tons of junk Saturday during the
city’s annual free Clean Sweep recycle event. By noon more than
200 visitors had already dropped off old mattresses, tires, televi-
sions and other unwanted items in the Umatilla Electric Coopera-
tive parking lot, where the event was set up. Most of the materials
dropped off, including wood pallets and electronics, will be recycled
by Hermiston Sanitary Disposal, but tires and plastic will be dis-
posed of. The city has one more cleanup event coming up this Sat-
urday, when hundreds of community members are expected to par-
ticipate in an I Love My City community-wide cleanup. Volunteers
are encouraged to meet at McKenzie Park at 9 a.m. to be split into
teams before heading out to pick up trash, rake leaves, clean graffiti
off of fences and participate in other clean-up activities downtown
and along the railroad tracks.
