Mescal
Paine
(P.A.I.N.E.) of Hermiston,
Oregon, was born Mes-
cal Payne (P.A.Y.N.E) on
July 13, 1926, in Wallowa
County to Edward T.
Payne and Gladys V.
(Conrad) Payne. She
died on March 21,
2018, in Hermiston,
at the age of 91.
Mescal was raised
in Union where she
graduated
from Paine
Union High in 1945
(Go Bobcats). Mescal then
went to Springfield, Mis-
souri, and attended Cen-
tral Bible College for three
years, and then to East-
ern Oregon College in La
Grande where she received
her bachelor’s degree in ele-
mentary education.
In December of 1951,
when Mescal was return-
ing to Wasco, where she
was teaching, God planted
Sergeant Burton Paine on a
Greyhound bus seat next to
her. This was the beginning
of their long-distance court-
ship and after six months
they were married on June
2, 1952, in Daly City, Cal-
ifornia. This union would
last for 62 years, until Burt’s
passing in 2015.
After their wedding, Burt
and Mescal lived in San
Francisco where he was
currently stationed. Burt
was then transferred to Ger-
many, and after the birth
of their first child Corinne,
they would join him. At
the completion of his mil-
itary service they returned
to Umatilla County where
Burt would try his hand at
farming and Mescal would
return to her teaching career.
Mescal taught school
in Umatilla for three years
when their second child,
Douglas, was born. Mes-
cal then transferred to the
Hermiston School Dis-
trict, teaching second grade
at West Park Elementary
School. She would then
transfer to the new Rocky
Heights Elementary School
where she would teach first
grade for the remainder of
her 31 years in teach-
ing. Mescal retired
in June 1984 after
teaching in excess of
1,000 kids. Mescal
would often laugh
and say “I’ve been in
school for 47 years
and I’ve never made
it out of the first
grade.”
Mescal was a member
of the Hermiston Christian
Center and the Happy Ram-
blers Travel Club. When
Burt retired in 1988 they
would spend their winters
snow-birding in Arizona.
Mescal enjoyed sewing,
reading, camping, travel-
ing and spending time with
family and friends. Mescal
also taught children in her
church for many years.
She is survived by her
daughter Corinne Pea-
cock and husband Terrence
of Sherwood; son Doug-
las Paine and wife Tia of
Hermiston; five grandchil-
dren: Dawn, Ty, Kurtis,
Andrea and Ashli; and nine
great-grandchildren.
Mescal was preceded in
death by her husband Burt,
parents Ed and Gladys, sis-
ter Sybil and brother David.
A funeral service will be
held on Saturday, March 31,
2018, at 9 a.m. at the Herm-
iston Christian Center, 1825
W. Highland Ave., Hermis-
ton, Oregon. Burial will fol-

at the age of 84.
Family members will be
available to receive
guests on Thursday,
March 29 from 2 to

be held on Friday,

Christian Church, 901 Penn
Avenue. Committal and
interment will follow at the
Hillcrest East Cemetery.
Phyllis was born on May
25, 1933, to Lois Conley
De Long and Vernon De
Long in La Grande. She
was very proud of her heri-
tage; which included Con-
leys, Goldens, Gekelers and
De Longs; all pioneers, who
settled in our valley. Her
great-great-grandfather, Ben
Brown, was the first man
to build a permanent home
and move his family to La
Grande. Phyllis spent all her
growing up years on a farm,
which her brother and his
wife still own and occupy.
She always said she didn’t
like living on a farm, but she
treasured these years!
The first four years of
her schooling she attended
a one-room school, the Lib-
erty School on Gekeler
Lane, where it now sits next
to the Blue Mtn. Grange.
The school was closed when
she was ready for the fifth
grade, and she and her broth-
ers rode the bus to Willow
School. She graduated from
La Grande High School in
1951.
On Dec. 27, 1952, she
and her high school sweet-
heart, John Chess, were mar-
ried. They had four children.
He died on Oct. 23, 1982.
She married Adrion Rim-
bey, a former high
school
classmate,
on June 28, 1987.
He was a barber in
Hermiston, so she
moved to Hermis-
ton where she lived
for 26 years. While
living in Hermiston
she attended the First
Christian Church and was
active in the Good Shepherd
Hospital Auxiliary.
In Dec. of 2014 she and
Adrion moved “back home”
where they had purchased
a home in Island City. Four
months later Adrion was
killed in an accident involv-
ing his ATV. She lived in the
home until her death.
She was a life-long
member of the La Grande
First Christian Church and
a member of the Grande
Ronde Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by her four
children and their spouses,
Cheryl and Tom Van Han-
del of Redmond, Jack and
Tammy Chess of La Grande,
Roger Chess of La Grande
and Larry and Sandy Chess
of Boise; two brothers and
their wives, Dale and Jackie
De Long of Island City and
Cecil and Linda De Long of
La Grande; nine grandchil-
dren; 12 great-grandchil-
dren; and other relatives and
many friends. She was pre-
ceded in death by her parents
and two husbands.
Contributions in mem-
ory of Phyllis may be made
to the La Grande First Chris-
tian Church Memorial Fund.
