Students celebrate as centenarians
Several local school districts recently celebrated Read Across America with dress-up days, reading challenges and events
dedicated to their favorite books and characters.
Stanfield Elementary’s Read Across America assembly Monday coincided with the 100th day of school, so students and
teachers dressed as 100-year-olds for the day. Top readers were entered into drawings to take home books, and some
students even earned the opportunity to douse their principal in whipped cream.
At McNary Heights Elementary School in Umatilla, classes made floats based on their favorite books and held a parade on
the school grounds. They also dressed as characters from Dr. Seuss books. The beloved children’s author’s birthday was
Friday, which was the official Read Across America day across the country.
