finals where he faced No.
3 Avery Jaramillo of Thur-
ston Saturday. Tuia picked
up a win by fall and a 2-0
decision to move on to the
semis, where he got No.
1 Matthew Lee of Mil-
waukie. And Blake won
by fall and by a 5-2 deci-
sion to advance to the semis
and faced No. 1 Iosefa Pol-
amalu from Sandy.
Madrigal dropped his
quarterfinal match and
moved into the consolation
bracket, where he handed
teammate Adrian Delgado
his second loss with a fall
at 3:58, keeping Madrigal
alive.
The Bulldogs were also
at the wrong end of a big
upset as No. 4 Sean Stew-
art (220) lost to unseeded
Crayton Gillespie of Cra-
ter by fall at 5:31 in the first
round, and then was elimi-
nated with a loss by fall in
consolation as well.
In Class 3A, Riverside
and Irrigon finished in 13th
(46 points) and 14th place
(44 points), respectively,
while Echo/Stanfield ended
its season in 26th place with
only 10 points.
For the Pirates, Fernando
Ortega (106), Abraham
Silva (113) and Andrew
Barker (120) all earned
fourth place finishes.
Barker and Ortega each
moved into the semifinals
with wins in the quarterfi-
nals following first-round
byes. Ortega has a matchup
with No. 2 Ryan Vidlak
of Cascade Christian and
No. 1 Derrik Kerr from La
Pine awaits Barker in the
semifinals.
Silva and Ethan Sny-
der (138) both were in con-
tention in the consolation
bracket.
After getting pinned
in 3:27 in the semifi-
nals, Ortega quickly made
it through the consola-
tion round with a win by
fall over Efrain Caldera of
Nyssa in just 35 seconds.
In the third place match, he
was pitted against Dayton’s
Ryan Penrose — who won
by a 9-0 major decision.
Barker moved into the
consolation round after La
Pine’s Derrik Kerr won by a
15-1 major decision. In the
consolation semis, Barker
won by a 13-2 major deci-
sion over Logan Beem of
Santiam Christian. Then,
in the third place match
against Ethan Howard (Wil-
lamina), Barker was pinned
final automatic qualifier
after edging out the seventh
place finisher by just 00.42
seconds. Barnard clocked
2:03.12, shaving nearly two
whole seconds off his dis-
trict championship time.
In his second event, the
100-yard butterfly, Bar-
nard finished in eighth place
to get one of two alternate
spots with his time of 55.49.
Wrathall joined Barnard
in the finals Saturday after
swimming the 100-yard
freestyle in 49.68. His sub-
50 seconds was good for
fourth place.
In Wrathall’s other event,
the 100-yard breaststroke,
his time of 1:03.00 wasn’t
good enough to make it into
the top six of his heat. But
once all 12 swimmers fin-
ished, he landed in seventh
place to get be the first alter-
nate in Saturday’s final heat.
Another Bulldog swam in
an individual event Friday.

match by fall and finished in sixth place in Class 5A.

Riverside’s Andrew Barker attempts to pin Willamina’s Bryce

by fall, and finished in fourth place for Class 3A.

Irrigon’s Alex Miranda-Walls (top) wrestles Willamina’s Nate
Konovalov in the 170-pound quarterfinals. Miranda-Walls
won the match by fall at 1:50, and finished in third place in
Class 3A at the OSAA State Championships in Portland.
in just 1:24, where he set-
tled for fourth place — an
improvement from his sixth
place finish as a junior.
Silva wrestled his way
through the consolation
bracket to try for third place
against Alexys Zepeda of
Gervais. The close bout
ended in favor of Zepeda,
who won by a 3-2 decision.
Irrigon’s Alex Miran-
da-Walls (170) had the best
day of any Knight, as he
claimed third place after
pinning Scio’s Dru Cook
in 1:12 to win the match.
Miranda-Walls got into the
consolation bracket after a
narrow 5-4 decision defeat
to Harrisburg’s Leithan
Briggs in the semifinals. He
used a first-round bye and
a win by fall in the quar-
terfinals to advance to the
semis.
Also for the Knights,
Brady Harrington (195)
made it into the third place
match by a win by fall in
4:57 and a win by decision
(3-2), he lost to Coquille’s
Joey Vigue by fall (1:27)
for a fourth place finish.
Harrington’s first win in
consolation Friday came
against Riverside’s Adolfo
Martinez, which knocked
him out of the tournament.
Silvestre Vasquez (126)
rounded out the top five in
his weight class after pin-
ning Echo’s Kyle Ranger in
Round 3 of the consolation
bracket, he moved on to the
consolation semifinals. But
after Asher Ruchti (Pleas-
ant Hill) won in sudden vic-
tory-1 (9-7), Vasquez had to
now wrestle for fifth place.
He pinned Hunter Robi-
son (Scio) in 1:47 for the
podium finish.
After Ranger was done
for Echo/Stanfield, there
were only two wrestlers
remaining. Both were also
defeated in the third round
of the consolation bracket.
David Elwood (Willa-
mina/Falls City) won by
fall in 2:23 over Mychael
Pointer (145), and Logan
Butler (182) lost to La
Pine’s Michael Heutzenro-
eder by a 9-5 decision.
Ranger wrestled his way
into Saturday’s slate after
winning his first match in
consolation by fall. Also
on Friday, Pointer scored
a close 14-10 decision vic-
tory, and Butler won and
lost by fall to start the day,
and then scored another
win by fall in just 50 sec-
onds in consolation to stay
in contention.
Heppner’s lone wres-
tler at the tournament, Zach
Bredfield at 145 pounds,
had back-to-back losses to
start and end his day early.
IRRIGON
continued from Page A10
continued. Irrigon’s Johnny
Phillips made both of his
free throws in the bonus to
give the Knights a one-point
advantage, but they needed
to distance themselves and
quickly.
Fans from both schools
filled the gym with the short
travel time, but Umatilla cer-
tainly had the home-court
advantage and it was getting
loud. Any time the Vikings
touched the ball the crowd
would roar, and only sim-
mer momentarily when the
Knights came up with a play.
This time, it was Flem-
ing who would silence the
stands. At half court, he
nabbed the ball away from
Umatilla and took it all the
way to extend Irrigon’s lead
to 51-48.
“I saw (Kaden Webb)
look at him right from the
start,” Fleming said of step-
ping into the passing lane. “I
knew what play they were
running so I just tried jump-
ing it ... and I got there.”
The Vikings’ late attempts
were unsuccessful, and Irri-
gon became the new EOL
district champions after a
tough 40 minutes of play.
“I’m happy for my kids,”
head coach Davie Salas said.
“Playing all those years and
having so much success with
another group, we just kind
sixth in the para-athlete
finals of the mixed 50-yard
freestyle (1:10.57).
Hermiston’s two relay
teams, the boys 200-yard
medley and 200-yard free-
style, fell outside of the
top six and were unable to
make it on time. The med-
ley relay finished in 10th
place (1:49.26) and the free-
style relay team placed ninth
(1:36.64).
On the final day of com-
petition, Barnard and Wrath-
all each swam for a title in
the 200-yard individual
medley (IM) and the 100-
yard freestyle, respectively.
Neither, however, were
able to crack the top three
but did land a spot on the
podium. Barnard finished
sixth in the IM after clock-
ing 2:03.96. He was in third
place after the first lap, but
after the turn began falling
behind.
Wrathall was close to
cracking the top three in the
100-yard free, but finished
fourth in 50.21. He was the
last swimmer to finish sub-
50 seconds.
of felt like we were left to do
something big. ... We knew
eventually it was going to
become our time and I told
the kids it was our time.”
After being within two
possessions of the lead for
most of the game, Umatilla
was finally able to knot the
score and take back control
in the final minute of regu-
lation. A 3-pointer by the
Vikings’ top scorer, junior
Sebastian Garcia, pushed the
score to 40-40.
On the ensuing posses-
sion, Irrigon senior Johnny
Phillips, who towers above
the competition at 6-foot-
5, simply outstretched his
hand and was able to block
Umatilla’s attempt at tak-
ing the lead. But the Vikings
recovered, and had their first
scoreboard advantage since
the opening minutes.
Up 42-40, Umatilla
nearly closed out the game
but a foul sent Irrigon senior
Eric Carillo to the charity
stripe, where he hit both free
throw attempts to keep the
Knights alive.
The Vikings try at a
game-winning shot in the
final seconds was no good,
which sent the game into
overtime.
