Umatilla
September 1, 1948 - October 1, 2017
Kennewick, Wash.
August 29, 1952 - October 6, 2017
February 7, 1935 - October 4, 2017
On Oct. 4, 2017, our be-
loved and beautiful moth-
er, Clarene Oleta Hample,
passed at home from this
life to the next. Although
we are saddened
and will miss her,
angels in heaven are
welcoming her!
Clarene was born
Feb. 7, 1935, in the
small town of Hep-
pner, Oregon. She
was the third of Hample
four daughters born
to Herman and Dolly Carr
(Allstott): Delores, Leota,
Clarene, and Sharon. She
was raised in the town of
Hermiston, Oregon, along
with her three sisters and
many aunts, uncles, and
cousins.
After graduating from
Hermiston High in 1953,
she was working at a soda
bar, where she met a dash-
ing young Air Force ser-
viceman in uniform, Fred
Hample, from Eugene,
Oregon. They were soon
married on Jan. 21, 1955,
at United Lutheran Church
in Eugene.
Clarene and Fred moved
into a cozy house near Tug-
man Park, and raised four
tow-headed children: Dar-
cie, Diane, Brent, and Eric.
Many fond family memo-
ries revolved around the
neighborhood and friends
of Ferry Street. Camp-
ing, fishing, and spending
days at Fern Ridge Lake
– or ocean salmon fishing
out of the Siuslaw River –
were other favorite family
activities.
Clarene graduated from
real estate school, got her
state license, and sold real
estate for five years. She
also spent many years
managing
investment
properties.
She was active in the
Council for the Aged, was
on the board of Chris-
tian Family Services, and
served as president of the
Re-Active Club of Eu-
gene. She was a volunteer
for Senior Services, FISH,
and the Hospital Guild.
She was a long-time
member of Central Luther-
an Church and active in
various ministries includ-
ing Stephen Minis-
tries, Altar Guild,
and prayer groups.
She and Fred en-
joyed many days
antiquing, fishing,
camping, reading,
traveling,
golfing
and adoring their
seven
grandchil-
dren. Clarene collected tea
strainers, candlesticks, and
sending ideas into Plug-
gers comic strip (and some
were published).
She enjoyed traveling
and had an open mind to
other cultures and people.
Places she traveled to in-
clude Hong Kong, Athens,
Rome, Macau, Geneva,
Jamaica, Salzburg, Edin-
burgh, London, Hawaii,
and Mexico.
Clarene and Fred cele-
brated their 56th wedding
anniversary in 2011 before
he passed away later that
year. Clarene is survived
by her sister, Sharon Wall
of Plano, Texas; daugh-
ter Darcie McNally of
Guerneville, California;
daughter Diane Caisse
of Eugene, Oregon; son
Brent Hample (wife Mon-
ica) of Eugene; son Eric
Hample of Eugene; and
her seven grandchildren
Justin, Nick, Kait, Alex,
David, Rachel, and Deb-
orah.
A memorial service will
be held at Central Luther-
an Church, 1857 Potter
Street, Eugene, Oregon, at
3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14.
The family asks that in
lieu of flowers, memorial
donations be made in her
name to her favorite char-
ities: Volunteers in Med-
icine, Central Lutheran
Church, and India Partners
(www.IndiaPartners.org).

Hospice House in
Kennewick, Wash-
ington.
Multiple
issues took her life.
She contracted Val-
ley Fever, a serious
fungal infection,
in Arizona nine
years ago, spend- Riker
ing two weeks in
hospital there. It abated
for awhile but came back
a few months ago, which
led to meningitis and fi-
nally several strokes that
in totality were too much
to overcome.
Roberta was born Sept.
1, 1948, at St. Anthony
Hospital, Pendleton, to
Roy and Rosalee Smith.
Kay lived most of her life
in Pendleton, graduated
Pendleton High, attend-
ed Blue Mountain CC
and graduated nursing
school at Walla Walla CC

worked at several hospi-
tals and had to retire early
due to advanced rheuma-

Kay was an accom-
plished horsewoman. She
really knew how to talk
horse. She helped with
4-H activities and trained
many horses. She greatly
enjoyed trail rides with
many friends as well as
doing very well in com-
petitive trail riding events.
She was involved with
the Pioneer Humane So-

helped rescue 18 horses
to our place in Pendleton
and placed all in good
homes.
She had varied inter-
ests that included artistic
pursuits in painting,
pottery and sewing
arts, quilting and
needlepoint.
She
spent many hours
organizing
gene-

won many awards
for her entries in the
Umatilla County
Fair. She designed
two houses we had built.
She enjoyed travel and
spending winters in Ari-
zona.
Kay married David in
Pendleton Oct. 2, 1977.
She almost made it to our
40th anniversary. She had
the usual redhead attitude,
which made for some in-
teresting conversations.
Kay is survived by
husband David; sister
Rochelle Peck; brothers
Royce Smith and Robert
Smith; several nephews
and nieces; and good
friend Cher Walker, who
was so caring of Kay.
Silver, our loving little
schnauzer, will miss her
