Morrow Co. fair kicks off Aug. 16-20

Celebrating its heritage
and showcasing the products
and skills of area residents,
the theme of the 2017 Mor-
row County Fair is “Our
Roots Run Deep in Morrow
County.”
The fair kicks off
Wednesday, Aug. 16, at
74473 Highway 74, Hep-
pner. In addition to the daily
4-H and FFA contests, there
is a Kids Fun Zone and The
Reptile Man. Fair admission
is $4 for ages 8 and up ($10
for a pass) and free for those
7 and under.
The Reptile Man, aka
Richard Richey, brings a
variety of animals, said Ann
Jones, fair secretary. Ani-
mals provided by The Rep-
tile Man have appeared in
numerous fi lms, including
“Wild” with Reese With-
erspoon, “I Don’t Feel at
Home in This World Any-

more” starring Elijah Wood
and “Kill Bill 2” featuring
Uma Thurman. Based out
of Colton, The Reptile Man
receives more than 100 un-
wanted reptiles each year.
He cares for the animals and
prepares many for adoption.

The
Junebugs perform high en-
ergy pop music (1-3 p.m.),
Tillamook ice cream social
Marina Park. Those planning
to attend are encouraged to
bring lawn chairs or blan-
kets. Also, food and bever-
ages will be available for
purchase from Judy’s Chuck
Wagon. In case of inclement
weather, the performance
will be held at the Irrigon Se-
nior Center.
An oldies rock and roll
band from the Tri-Cities,
the group also plays some
country hits from the ‘50s to
the ‘70s — as well as a few
tunes from the 1980s.

dation, the Music in the
Parks series is funded by
the Morrow County Unifi ed
Recreation District and Port-
land General Electric. For

Grange No. 867, which was
the largest grange in Oregon
for many years and recently
celebrated it’s 80th anniver-
sary.
The library is located at
235 E. Gladys Ave., Herm-
iston. It’s open Monday
through Thursdays from 11
a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday/
Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5

Ireland Martin belts out
“Heart of Dixie” during
a past talent show at the
Morrow County Fair. Winners
of each age group compete
for cash prizes and a chance
to compete at the Oregon
State Fair.
(1 p.m.), the RDO kids’ trac-
tor pull (5 p.m.), and the Pee
Wee My Favorite Outfi t and
the 4-H Fashion Revue (6:30
p.m.).
Also, a special dinner
and evening entertainment
with the Cory Peterson
Band is from 7-10 p.m. Par-
adise Rose Chuckwagon
will serve tri-tip or chicken
meals. Tickets are $15 or
$7.50 for kids ages 12 and
under. Also, beer will be
available for purchase.
• Thursday: People won’t
want to miss the Blue Moun-
tain Old Time Fiddlers (10
a.m. to noon), and a talent
show (3 p.m.), which in-
cludes cash prizes in three
age groups. Division win-
ners may compete in the
Oregon State Fair. Rules
and registration forms are
available on the fair’s web-
site. The evening closes out
(6-10 p.m.) with Murray’s
Beer & Wine Tasting, which
includes live music featuring
Joe Lindsay & Friends and
Nate Botsford.
• Friday: Ballet perfor-
mance (4 p.m.), greased pig
contest (6 p.m.), four age
groups will compete for $50
and the pig.
• Saturday: Parade (10
a.m.), buyers luncheon
(noon) and youth livestock
auction (2 p.m.).
In addition, a pair of Or-
egon Trail Pro Rodeo per-
formances are Friday and
Saturday nights at 7 p.m.
Get there 30 minutes ear-
ly for the Mutton Busters,
which features 12 kids riding
sheep. Rodeo tickets are $10
for ages 13 and up, $6 for
ages 7-12 and free for ages 6
and under. Also, VIP seating

will keep things rockin’ after
the rodeo in the Spur ‘Em
Barn.
Activities close out Sun-
day, Aug. 20, with a track/
cross country fundraising
breakfast at 6 a.m. and the
Morrow County Rodeo at
1:15 p.m. Open to Morrow
County residents and alum-
ni, there are activities for all

Metal band to rock
Wildhorse Casino
Selling more than 10
million albums worldwide,
Dokken continues to per-
form and will rock the region
during a show at Wildhorse
Resort & Casino.
The heavy metal band
will take the stage Thursday,
Aug. 31 at 8 p.m. in the Riv-
ers Event Center. Tickets for
the 21-and-older show are
$29 each.
The band was nominat-
ed for a Grammy for best
metal performance in 1989.
Familiar top singles in-
clude “Alone Again,” “In
My Dreams” and “Into The
Fire.”
All tickets are general
admission for the stand-
ing-room-only show. There
will be no tables or chairs —
providing an opportunity for
audience members to stand
near the stage or dance. In
addition, a no-host bar will
be available.

Cruise Control revs up

The Music in the Parks
series crescendos with its
fi nal performance of the sea-
son featuring Cruise Control.
The free show is Monday,
Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. at Irrigon
Library exhibit features
Oregon Grange
An exhibit highlighting
the Oregon Grange is on dis-
play at the Hermiston Public
Library.
The exhibit focuses on
the history and accomplish-
ments of the Oregon Grange,
which began in 1874. It fea-
tures photos and memora-
bilia about the association
for farmers, which sponsors
social activities, commu-
nity service and political
lobbying. The exhibit will
also include information
Heppner High School
hosts all ’80s reunion
A reunion for all Heppner
High School graduates from
the 1980s is planned.
The All ‘80s Heppner
Class Reunion is Saturday,
Aug. 19 at 5 p.m. at the Hep-
pner Elks Lodge, 142 Main
St. A no-host taco bar will be
available. In addition, those
attending are encouraged to
bring photos and stories to
share with others.

Group seeks more
aviation enthusiasts
An organization that
promotes general and recre-
ational aviation invites peo-
ple to learn more about the
Experimental Aircraft Asso-
ciation.
Everyone with an inter-
est in aviation is invited to
attend. Participants don’t
have to have a pilot’s license
or own an airplane to learn
more about Chapter 219 of
the Experimental Aircraft
Association. The club was
chartered more that 50 years
ago at the Hermiston Munic-
ipal Airport.
The group meets the third
Tuesday of each month. The
next meeting is Aug. 15 at
7 p.m. in the administrative
building at the Hermiston
Airport, 1600 Airport Way,
located south of town off
Highway 395.

The next Open Air Mar-
ket in Echo is coming up.
The free event is Satur-

Story time shines light
on solar eclipse
An upcoming story time
at the Echo Public Library
will focus on the upcoming
full solar eclipse.
Oregon author Nancy
Coffelt has given permission
to reproduce her book, “The
Big Eclipse,” and children
will get a copy during the
program. In addition, special
eclipse glasses will be dis-
tributed to participants. The
free event is Friday, Aug.
18 at 2 p.m. in the old VFW
Hall, 210 W. Bridge St.,
Echo. Extra eclipse glasses
will be available on a fi rst-
come, fi rst-served basis on
the morning of the Monday,
Aug. 21 eclipse.

moves services
The Living Water Four-
square Church has changed
venues.
The church, which pre-
viously was housed on East
Gladys Avenue, is now meet-
ing at The Arc building. The
