Umatilla High School student set
to go to national space competition

Five local students
each received $1,500
from the Good Shepherd
Medical Center Auxilia-
ry during the hospital’s
annual volunteer lun-
cheon on June 26, 2017.
The money was
raised through gift shop
sales and other fundrais-
ers.

of a team in an industry simu-
lation game, designed to em-
ulate the experience of work-
ing on an aerospace industry
proposal team. The teams will
each have managers from the
industry to help them prepare
for the competition, before
they present to a panel of
judges.

A Umatilla High School
student will travel to Florida
this month to participate in
the finals of the Internation-
al Space Settlement Design
Competition.
Anthony Ibarra, who is an
incoming junior, will repre-
sent the Umatilla High School
robotics program at the event.
Ibarra will compete as part
the Umatilla School District,
Ibarra said he is a little ner-
vous, but looks forward to the
competition.
“I have liked participating
in the Umatilla Robotics Pro-
gram because I like working
with my hands and hope to
become an engineer,” Ibarra
said.
The Umatilla School Dis-
trict was able to send one
student to the competition
through a partnership with
the JPL Museum in Stayton,
Oregon, as well as through
the assistance of Dr. Norman
Chaffee. The museum was
established in 2015, and cen-
ters on the career of Joseph
Loftus, a 47-year employee
of NASA.
