Fire blazes area
west of Umatilla
Umatilla Rural Fire
Protection District sti-
fled a blaze at Southshore
Drive, west of Umatilla,
around 7:30 Monday eve-
ning. The cause of the fire
is unknown, but no one
was injured, and no struc-
tures were damaged.
When fire crews ar-
rived, the fire was burning
in about 2 acres of tall,
dry grass. The fire was
spreading quickly due to
high winds, and firefight-
ers were aided by Uma-
tilla County Fire District,
Irrigon Rural Fire Pro-
tection District, Oregon
Department of Fish and
Wildlife and U.S. Depart-
ment of Fish and Wildlife.
Winds were at 10 to 15
mph, which contributed
to the spread of the fire,
but crews were able to
keep it away from struc-
tures and pinched off the
fire at the river. The fire
was contained around
8:15 p.m., and crews were
mopping up until about 3
a.m. Tuesday. Umatilla
Rural Fire and Oregon
Department of Fish and
Wildlife will monitor the
area for the next several
days.

Woman injured in crash with semi
HERMISTON HERALD
A woman driving a
pickup was injured in a
collision with a semi truck
near the intersection of Di-
agonal Road and East Pun-
kin Center around 4 p.m.
Wednesday.
The extent of the driv-
er’s injuries weren’t im-
mediately available, but
Fire Chief Scott Stanton
said she was treated at the
scene before being taken
to the hospital for further
care. The driver of the semi
truck declined medical at-
tention.
The front of the gold
Toyota
Tundra
was
smashed and it was rest-
ing next to a fence on the
eastbound side of the road,
facing the wrong way. The
semi truck was smashed
above the front wheel on
the left side of the vehicle,
and debris littered the road-
way.
Diagonal Road was
blocked, and drivers com-
ing east were rerouted
through Baxter Road.
State Trooper Jerrad Little
said he did not know how
the crash occurred, but he
thought the semi truck was
driving west, and the pick-
up truck was driving east.
