Richard L.
Layton, 66,
of Hermiston
passed away
on Sunday,
July 2, 2017,
near Herm-
iston.
Richard was born
January 21, 1951,
in Pioche, Nevada,
the son of Earl and
Anna
(Shipman)
Layton. He grew up
and attended school
in Blue Diamond, Layton
Nevada,
graduat-
ing from Las Vegas High
School in the class of 1969.
After high school, he and
his brother Ronald served
together in the U.S. Navy
during the Vietnam War
aboard the USS Mars.
After his honorable dis-
charge, he moved back to
Nevada where he resided
until moving to Corvallis,
Oregon, in the early 1990s.
He moved from Corvallis to
Hermiston in the late 1990s
where he has resided since.
Richard was an avid
fisherman and hunter and
shared his love for the
outdoors with his children
and grandchildren.
He was also
very artistic
and created
many unique
pieces of art-
work giving
many pieces
away to family and
friends.
Richard married
Laurie Thorsheim on
April 1, 1973, in Las
Vegas. The couple
divorced many years
later.
He was preceded
in death by his parents and
his brother Ronald.
He is survived by his
son Bill and his wife Tina
Layton of Albany; daugh-
ter Malissa Layton of Echo;
sister Connie Ohlandt of
Las Vegas, Nevada; brother
Don Layton of Blue Dia-
mond, Nevada; and grand-
children Derrik, Dustin,
Bradley, Maleena and
Makhi.

Carl E. Kelso, 76, of
Hermiston (formerly of
Meacham) died on Thurs-
day, June 29, 2017.
Carl was born Dec. 3,
1940, in Webb City,
Missouri, the son of
Raymond and Beu-
lah (Lewis) Kelso.
At the age of 5, he
moved to Pendleton
where he attended
school and graduat-
ed from Pendleton Kelso
High School in the
late 1950s. He lived in the
Meacham area for over
30 years until moving to
Hermiston three years ago.
Carl worked for Mar-
lette Homes for many
years. He then worked for
the State Highway Depart-
ment doing road mainte-
nance until retiring.
He was a talented wood-
worker and enjoyed hunt-
ing and fishing. He was
a member of the Eagles
Lodge in Hermiston where
he was past president and
also was State Father.
Carl married Virginia
Burton in Pendleton on
February 23, 1985.
He is survived by his
wife of 32 years,
Virginia of Herm-
iston; six stepchil-
dren; and numerous
grandchildren and
great-grandchil-
dren.
He was preced-
ed in death by a
daughter,
Penny
Burton; a son, Dan Burton;
and grandchildren Bran-
don and Wesley.
At his request, no ser-
vices are planned. A pri-
vate family interment will
be near Meacham.

April 9, 1936, in
Nassau, Minneso-
ta, the daughter of
Herman and Sorena
(Ehlebacht) Block.
She moved to San
Jose,
California,

J. Fricke, whom she mar-
ried in May of 1961 so she
could become the boss. The
couple relocated to Hermis-
ton, Oregon, in 1967 where
she has resided since.

Colorado, to Dawn
and Clay Price. As a
young girl, she was
adopted by Mary and
Casey Denny and
lived in Pilot Rock
throughout her child-

She lived in Pendleton before
moving to Hermiston, where
she resided her remaining 25
years.
She gave birth to, and
loved dearly, three children:
Valeen, Trenton and Alen.
Dea married Greg Hunt on
Sunday, October 13, 2002.
They lived as husband and
wife and best friends until
her passing. Everyone knew
her heart beat for her grand-
children Nolan, Sophia, Gra-
cy, Justice, Ember, Emma
Lucas and Emmett.
Dea loved to create. She
often expressed herself
through glass etching, jew-
elry-making, penmanship,
and woodworking. Dea and
Greg thrived in the outdoors
together; often packing up at
a moment’s notice and head-
ing for an unknown destina-
tion to spend time together
with nature under the stars.
She had a whimsical spir-
it and loved anything black.
She found comfort in things
considered “weird,” was as
serious about Halloween
as most are Christmas and

She adored all things minia-
ture, missed the ’70’s,
loved rock and roll
and couldn’t wait for
the remake of Steven
King’s “It.” She cher-
ished all critters and
was as gentle with
a spider as most are
with babies.
She had tender-
ness like no other. This was
said for any person or thing
that needed it, but especially
true for those misunderstood,
unappreciated, sad or lonely.
Her heart was always wide
open for anyone who want-
ed in and she felt everything
as deeply as the cumula-
tive depth of the souls she
touched. Dea measured her
life by the people she loved
and loved her in return.
Dea is loved and sur-
vived by her husband, Greg;
daughters Valeen Madden
and Becky Pettey; sons
Trenton Storm and Alen
Storm; sisters Linda Surber
and Melanie Kay Grego-
ry; brother Sean Price; and
grandchildren Nolan and So-
phia Madden, Gracy, Justice
and Ember Storm, Emma
Naylor and Lucas and Em-
mett Pettey.
