Special Olympics celebrates athletes, supporters

Special
Olympics Local Program
#510 awards event.
Athletes, coaches, vol-
unteers and family mem-
bers gathered May 23 at
The Arc Building in Herm-
iston to celebrate those who
help make the program a
success. Among those hon-
ored were Coach of the
Year, Kris Neustel; Busi-
ness of the Year, Hermiston
Drug & Gift; Volunteer of
the Year, Cindy Middleton;
Female Athlete of the Year,
Jillian Smalley and Male
Athlete of the Year, Tram-
pus Jeffreys.
Special Olympics pro-
vides year-around athletic
training and sports compe-
titions for individuals with
intellectual and develop-
mental disabilities. To par-
ticipate, athletes must be
age 6 or older. There is no
charge to participate.
Local athletes are now
focusing on training for
golf, bocce and athletics
(track and field). In addi-

Pitner, Ashtyn Larsen, Caleb
Greenhalgh, Caleb Picken,
Reilly Lovercheck, Kieric
Speakman and Jenna Har-
rison. Myrna Van Cleave is
the accompanist.
In addition, the Umatilla
String Quartet will perform.
Members are Tyler Simp-
son, Ithea Engum Corrale,
Kristen Gregg and Jenna
Harrison. And, a cello quar-
tet will play, which features
Reilly Lovercheck, Caleb
Picken, Ashtyn Larsen and
Paige Pitner.

Running Hot and
Walking Cold benefits
those in need
The Umatilla County
Peer Support Network, in
conjunction with Lifeways
Inc. and Community Part-
ners in Umatilla County,
is heading up the Running
Hot and Walking Cold
5K/10K run/walk.
In its third year, the
event is Saturday, June 17,
from 9 a.m. to noon at Riv-
erfront Park and Oxbow
Trail, Hermiston. Registra-
tion begins at 8 a.m. There
is no set fee to participate,
but participants are asked
to make a donation of sup-
plies for the Hermiston
Warming & Cooling Sta-
tion and Desert Rose Min-
istries.
Suggested items include
cases of water, packaged
cookies/crackers, laundry
detergent,
pre-packaged
bleach, oatmeal, disinfec-
tant wipes, paper products,
creamer/sugar
packets,
fruit/soup cups, hand san-
itizer, hand soap, play-
ing cards, games, books,
non-latex gloves, coloring
books, crayons, flashlights,
batteries, socks and DVDs.
Donations
can
be
brought the day of the
event or can be dropped off
at the Hermiston Peer Cen-
ter at 1195 N. First Place
Hermiston. In addition, for
