Garden tour sprouts inspiration,
raises money for PEO chapter
By TAMMY MALGESINI
Community Editor
Vicki Bowman, past
president of P.E.O. Chap-
ter DR, said a love of gar-
dening has sprouted into
an annual garden tour that
serves as a fundraiser for
the group.
“Audney Cosand start-
ed the Garden Tour and
inspired us with her love
of gardening and travels
around the world, often
visiting gardens and taking
garden tours on her many
trips,” Bowman said.
In its 13th year, the
Hermiston Garden Tour
features a handful of gar-
dens. After taking the
tour, participants are en-
couraged to stop by Ko-
pacz Nursery & Florist.
The Hermiston business
is providing a 20 percent
discount to all garden tour
ticket holders. In addition
to a variety of flowers and
plants, the store has a large
selection of home and gar-
den items. Also, Heidi’s
Coffee Cottage is offering
$1 off on the beverage of
your choice.
The event is Saturday,
June 17 from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. The tour booklet in-
cludes descriptions of the
gardens, directions and a
map. Tickets can be pur-
chased at Cottage Flow-
ers, Kopacz Nursery and
from P.E.O. members.
The gardens may be

visited in any order. Also,
members of the P.E.O.
Chapter will greet partic-
ipants at each of the loca-
tions.
“I’m always amazed
at the beauty we find be-
hind a gardener’s fence or
home,” Bowman said.
The highlighted gar-
dens include an Oasis of
Ease at the home of Ran-
dy and Pat Moulton. With
busy lifestyles that have
them on the go, the Moul-
tons have created a low
maintenance getaway that
features a cascading wa-
terfall, evergreen shrubs,
Japanese maples, a me-
nagerie of perennials and
pots overflowing with an-
nuals providing splashes
of color.
The Family Farm of
Creigh and Pam Lincoln
includes a Yellow Rose
of Texas, dating back to
1912. A rose-covered ar-
bor provides entry to the
grounds, which features
numerous beds of shrubs,
perennials and annuals, as
well as open lawn. In ad-
dition, to an herb garden
and space for vegetables,
look for more than 60 hos-
tas and 30 heuchera (coral
bells) scattered in shaded
areas.
The home of Scott and
Melissa Purswell features
a jaunt down Memory
Lane. The couple brought
a garden to life from dirt
piles when they built
their home in 2011. With
an inviting atmosphere,
the garden has been used
for weddings and other
events.
Described as a Hidden
Delight, the gardens at
Steve and Joni Anderson’s
home provides a pleasant
surprise tucked behind the
small home. And Cul-de-
sac Charm showcases the
evolving efforts of Mike
and Debbie Purkerson.
While the garden own-
ers aren’t required to be
present, many times they
are on hand during the
tours, Bowman said.
“It is fun to be able to vis-
it with them and they seem
to enjoy it, too,” she said.
Bowman, who has
worked on various com-
mittee and co-chaired past
events, said upwards of
80-100 people take the
tour each year. The tour,
she said, typically rais-
es about $1,000, which
is used to support P.E.O.
scholarships and grants.
P.E.O. International (Phil-
anthropic Educational Or-
ganization) was founded

Tour of Knowledge attacks invasive weeds
Hermiston Herald
As Gov. Kate Brown
was declaring May 14-20
as Oregon Invasive Weed
Awareness Week, members
of the Tour Of Knowledge
were busy hand pulling
garlic mustard from its
Adopt-A-River site, the Ox-
bow Property.
Located on the outskirts
of Hermiston and owned by
the Bureau of Reclamation,
Oxbow is the only resto-
ration site on the Umatilla
River.
“After a late start garlic
mustard came on much fast-
er than usual,” said Eileen
Laramore, Tour Of Knowl-
edge executive director.
“We didn’t have time to
promote Oregon’s Invasive
Weed Awareness Week.”
Garlic mustard is listed
as a class “B” and “T” nox-
ious weed, which means it’s
of economic importance
and action against these
weeds has priority. It thrives
in the shady forest and seed
is spread by flooding, wild-
life and human activity.
So far this year the Tour
Of Knowledge has pulled,

bagged and removed al-
most 20 large SOLVE gar-
bage bags of garlic mustard,
Laramore said. Vehicles
aren’t allowed at Oxbow so
the group has to haul tools
and bagged weeds on and
off site with their aging gar-
den wagon. With Oxbow’s
222 acres and 1 1/2 miles of
river bank, Laramore said it
can be challenging.
“We thought the wagon
would hold up one more
year but it’s really taking a
beating,” she said. “Tires
keep going flat and twice
we lost the pin that holds
the handle together.”
With several projects
going at Oxbow, all of
which require the use of
a wagon, it’s bad timing
for wagon breakdowns,
said Laramore, who also
is a member of the Uma-
tilla County Weed Board.
At this time she said they
don’t have the money to
purchase a replacement
wagon.
“We can’t function on
Oxbow without a good
garden wagon so we’re
looking for someone who
would be willing to do-
nate a garden wagon so
we can continue our work
at Oxbow,” she said.
The Tour Of Knowl-
edge meets the first
Wednesday
of
each
month from 6:30-8 p.m.
in Room 133 at the Herm-
