Deloris Stone passed
away peacefully on Tuesday,
May 23, at the age of 94 and
is now in the presence of the
Lord Jesus whom she loved
and served.
Deloris Marie Or-
ton was born in Pend-
leton, Ore., on Sep-
tember 19, 1922. The
first child of Beecher
and Sopha Orton,
she had two brothers,
Ivan and Don. When Stone
World War II broke
out, she met Burleigh William
Redifer. They were married
in 1942. Soon after, Burleigh
was sent to Bedford, England.
They had four children: Dee
Ann, Kathie, Bill and Bonnie.
Burleigh was killed in a pri-
vate plane crash in 1963.
She married Frank Stone
in 1965. They had two chil-
dren, Sonja and Marc. Marc
passed away in 1985, due
to an automobile accident.
Frank passed away in 2002.
Deloris kept active teach-
ing Sunday school, help-
ing with Child Evangelism
Fellowship, hosting Bible
studies and Bible clubs and
participating in short-term
ministries, which included
trips to England, Mexico and
the Caribbean. An annual
highlight was serving on the
Godmobile at the Umatilla
County Fair and the Oregon
State Fair. In her later years
she crocheted baby caps for
the newborns at Good Shep-
herd Hospital.
Deloris proved herself
to be a servant to all. She
prayed daily for her family
and friends and was
unselfish in her giv-
ing to the Lord. Many
around the world have
been touched by her
example.
Deloris is preced-
ed in death by her
parents, Beecher and
Sopha Orton; broth-
er Ivan Orton; first husband
Burleigh Redifer; second
husband Frank Stone; and
son Marc Stone.
She is survived by her
brother Don Orton of Pendle-
ton; children Dee Ann Valdiv-
ia of Kodiak, Alaska, Kathie
(Richard) Wilson of Pasco,
Wash., Bill (Lois) Redifer of
Three Hills, Alberta, Canada,
Bonnie Redifer of McMin-
nville and Sonja Bogart of
Hermiston; six grandchildren:
Heath Wilson, Brett (Jacki)
Wilson, Sharon Redifer, Me-
lissa Redifer, Allison Bogart
and Matthew (Asha) Bogart;
and three great-grandchil-
dren, Andrew Wilson, Wyatt
Wilson and Londyn Redifer.
Funeral services will be
at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June
3, 2017, at Burns Mortu-
ary chapel with Pastor Bill
Griggs officiating. Interment
will follow in Hermiston
Cemetery.
Kay Louise Reese died
Saturday, May 27, 2017,
at the age of 73 years, at
her home in Mount Hood,
Oregon. She was born De-
cember 18, 1943, in
Vancouver, Wash-
ington, to Harold
and Geneva (An-
derson) Myers. Kay
graduated from Fort
Vancouver
High
School and attended
Washington State Reese
University
where
she was a member of Alpha
Chi Omega sorority. She
met her husband, James B.
Reese, in Seattle, Wash.,
and they were married in
Vancouver, Wash., on July
8, 1967. They lived in
Costa Mesa, Calif., for six
years and Hermiston, Ore.,
for 39 years, before moving
to Hood River Valley five
years ago.
Kay was a compassion-
ate, hard-working woman.
Her family has the fond-
est memories of her as a
ukulele playing, Charles-
ton dancing, Anne Murray
singing, avocado eating,
daisy loving, craft and culi-
nary making sensation. She
thrived on her relationships
with friends and family,
and played an integral role
volunteering for schools,
church and community. She

Betty Ann (Hinkle) Gillett

June 5, 1936-January 22, 2017
Betty Ann (Hinkle) Gil-
lett passed away Sunday
January 22, 2017, in Se-
dan, Kansas. She was born
to Chester and Viola Marie
(Hall) Hinkle on June 5,
1936, in Stillwater, Okla-
homa.
Betty was raised in
Guthrie, Oklahoma, where
she attended school and
graduated from Guthrie
High School in May 1955.
On June 28, 1955, she
married Robert (Bob) Gil-
lett in Wenatchee, Wash-
ington. To this union came
five children: Barney, Car-
olyn, Tamara, Brenda and
Neoma.
The family moved to a
farm in Irrigon in March
1975. Betty enjoyed her
vegetable and flower gar-
dens, reading, jigsaw puz-
zles, games, traveling,
cooking for and being with
her family. She also enjoyed
volunteering for whatever
job needed to be done.
Betty was a member of
and a Sunday School teach-
er at Columbia View Com-
munity Church for many
years. She also volunteered
for many years at the Irri-
gon Senior Center, both at
the center and serving cof-
fee to weary travelers from
the senior coffee trailer at
the Boardman rest area.
Betty was also involved
from the beginning of the
Irrigon Watermelon Festi-
val. She was always busy
and never turned anyone
down who needed her help.

her to keep up and oh, did
she know how to work a
room. As with almost ev-
erything, that would bring
a smile to her face.
She made every spe-
cial occasion more
special, and did a lot
of heavy lifting as
a mother, wife and
professional. And,
we all cherish that
she and Jim share a
true love, and would
have soon celebrated 50
years of marriage in just
five more weeks.
She is survived by her
husband Jim and four
daughters and their fami-
lies: Glenna and Jeff Stone,
Sadie and Piper, of Bothell,
Wash.; Pamela and John
Stevenson, Jack, Connor,
Owen and Tyler, of Corval-
lis, Ore.; Andrea and Rick
Streedain, Nils and Nora,
of Portland, Ore.; Sarah
and Mike Magura, Kayla
and Aiden, of Clackamas,
Ore.; and her brother Steve
Myers and his wife Susan
of Sun Valley, Idaho.

manuel Lutheran Church
in Hood River at 11 a.m.
Reception immediately fol-
lowing the service.
She was a very selfless and
giving person. Everyone
around her couldn’t help
but absorb her love and
passion for life.
Betty was preceded in
death by her former hus-
band, Bob Gillett; her fa-
ther and stepmother, Ches-
ter and Ruby Hinkle; her
mother and stepfather, Vi-
ola Marie and John Wills;
Bob’s parents, Vernon and
Helen Gillett; half brother
Larry Wills; and brother-in-
law Charles Gillett.
Betty is survived by son
Barney Gillett of Howard,
Kansas; daughters Carolyn
Prouty and her husband Bart
of Irrigon, Ore., Tammy
Reid and her husband Andy
of Pasco, Wash., Brenda
Newport and her husband
John of Irrigon, Ore., and
Nomie Stout and her fiancé
Ralph Green of West Val-
ley, Utah; 12 grandchildren,
and 23 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by half
brothers Phil Wills and his
wife Kathy, Gene Wills,
John Wills, and Floyd Hin-
kle and his wife Joyce; half
sisters Donna Dvorak and
her husband Jerry and Nan-
cy Ray; sister-in-law Linda
Crow and her husband Ev-
erett; and brothers-in-law
Billy Gillett and his wife
Clara, and Mike Gillett and
his wife Gwen.
A memorial service will
be held on Sunday, June 4,
2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ir-
rigon Senior Center, with a
potluck to follow.
BIRTHS
Robert L. “Bob” Friend
was born September 13,
1946, in Walla Walla, Wash.,
the son of Lee and Anna
(Meads) Friend. Bob passed
away at the age of 70 on Sun-
day, May 21, 2017, in Herm-
iston.
Bob grew up in Hermiston
and graduated from Hermis-
ton High School in the mid
1960s. He began his career
as an electrician for I.B.E.W.
#125. He worked as an elec-
trician at the Coal Energy
Plant in Boardman for 35
years.
Bob enjoyed hunting, fish-
ing and being in the outdoors.
He married Shirley Titus,
who preceded him in death in
2009. He was also preceded
in death by his parents.
He is survived by a cous-
in, Ivan and his wife Marga-
ret Meads of Hermiston, and
several distant relatives.
A celebration of life will
be held at 10:00 a.m. Thurs-
day, June 1, 2017, in the
Burns Mortuary chapel, 685
W. Hermiston Avenue, Herm-
iston.

David A. Helzer was born
on September 15, 1949, in
Nampa, Idaho, to parents
Broyce and Nola Kinley Hel-
zer. He died on May 25, 2017,
at his home in Hermis-
ton, Oregon, at the age
of 67 years surround-
ed by loved ones.
He graduated high
school in Caldwell,
Idaho, in the class of
1968. He moved to
Hermiston, Ore., in Helzer
1976. He later moved
to Pullman, Wash., for several
years and returned to Herm-
iston in 2010 where he has
lived since. David was united
in marriage to Sharon Seger
on November 24, 1998, in
Winnemucca, Nev.
He was an owner opera-
tor of his own truck for many
years. David then worked as
a truck driver for WalMart
from September of 1999 until
he retired in August of 2016.
He enjoyed spending time
with his family and friends,
fishing, flying, and relaxing
after his retirement.
