(GIRLS) HERMISTON 4, EISENHOWER 3 —
At Yakima, Washington, the Hermiston
Bulldogs dominated doubles action on Sat-
urday to help the team defeat Eisenhower
on the road.
“The doubles teams have been playing
real strong and just keep improving,” Herm-
iston coach Jason Sivey said. “Overall we
played with a better attitude than earlier in
the year and that was good to see.”
Hermiston’s lone win in the singles
matches came at No. 1 where Mackenzie
Hill took care of Eisenhower’s Taiz Garcia,
6-2 and 6-2. The remaining three singles
matches were relatively close, but Sivey
said the players are still trying to figure out
how to win consistently.
In doubles action, Hermiston dropped
only four games combined through the
three matches.

MAC-HI 4, RIVERSIDE 4 — The Mac-Hi
Pioneers and Riverside Pirates tied in a
match on Saturday, as Riverside won all
four singles matches and Mac-Hi won all
four doubles matches.
“I was very pleased on how the girls dou-
bles played,” Mac-Hi coach Danny Sanchez
said. “They got good quality wins against
league opponents.”
Sanchez was also impressed with his
No. 1 singles player Kasey Lesko’s match,
as she took Riverside’s Veronica Rodriguez
to three sets after splitting the first two
6-2 and 6-4.
“Even though Kasey lost she got great
experience going the distance in her
match,” Sanchez said.

WESTON-MCEWEN 9, RIVERSIDE 3 — At
Boardman, the Weston-McEwen TigerScots
boys and girls tennis teams made easy
work of the Riverside Pirates on Friday, as
the boys compiled a 5-1 record while the
girls went 4-2.
“I’m so proud of how the players perse-
vered and played so well in not so perfect
conditions,” Weston-McEwen coach Troy
Olson said.
Weston-McEwen’s lone loss in the girls
matches came at No. 3 singles where
Krysta Calvert fell to Riverside in a tie-
breaker 8-6. In the five other girls matches,
Weston-McEwen won 31 of the 40 games
that were played.
On the boys side, Riverside won the No.
1 singles match when Austin Thompson
beat Ryan Schmidtgall in a close 6-4 match.
But then Weston-McEwen rolled again,
winning 30 of the 48 games.

(GIRLS) HERMISTON 7, CAPITAL 1 — At
Hermiston, the Hermiston girls won three
of the four tie-breakers they faced on Thurs-
day to beat Capital (ID) in a non-league
match.
Head coach Jason Sivey said it was a big
turnaround from the last time out.
“Compared to our match against Hood
River we came out with a lot more fire,”
he said. “It seems like we had an attitude
adjustment this week.”
Mackenzie Hill got things started with a
dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Kira Weston at
No. 1 singles, and No. 1 doubles team of
Jaycee Ternes and Katelynn Millard contin-
ued to impress their coach with a 6-1, 6-0
win over Ayla Thayer and Jalen DeHartog.
“They’re continuing to show that they’re
a very competitive team, and I think we’re
going to see even better from them as the
year goes along,” Sivey said.
Hermiston’s first tiebreaks came in the
No. 2 matches as Adrian Stewart won the
final two sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7), to beat Thayer in
singles, then Reed Middleton and Breena
Wadekamper rebounded from a second-set
loss to win 7-6 (3) in the deciding frame
against Emma Waddel and Weston.
Alyssa Perkins and Olivia Thomas also
won by tiebreak at No. 4 doubles for the
Bulldogs.

Baseball
WESTON-MCEWEN 9-16, HEPPNER 5-3 —
Brett Speed had four hits, scored five runs,
hit a home run and drove in five runs to
help his Weston-McEwen TigerScots beat
the Heppner Mustangs, 9-5 and 16-3, in
Special District 6 action on Saturday.
Along with Speed’s productive day on
offense, he also earned the win on the
mound in Game 1 as he tossed 3 1/3
innings while allowing just three hits and
one unearned run with five strikeouts.
Travis Hendley earned the win in Game
2 after tossing 3 2/3 innings of three-hit,
one-run baseball.
The TigerScots (5-6, 3-3 SD6) offense
pounded out 19 hits as a team on Saturday,
and besides Speed’s production Brendan
Dearing went a combined 4-8 with six runs
scored and two RBI, Hendley had a pair of
hits and three runs scored, Hunter Sater
scored two hits and five RBI and James
West had a pair of hits and two RBI.
For Heppner (1-11, 0-6), Tyler Carter had a
standout day on offense as he tallied four
hits in the game including a perfect 3 for
3 day in Game 1 and a double in Game 2.
Wyatt Steagall had one of his best starts on
the mound in Game 1, lasting 3 2/3 innings
with three strikeouts while allowing three
hits and two runs.

HOOD RIVER 1-14, HERMISTON 0-10 — At
Hood River, the Bulldogs nearly came back
but couldn’t avoid the sweep on Friday to
open Columbia River Conference play.
Locked in a scoreless Game 1, Hermiston
(6-9, 0-2 CRC) was unable to get anything
going against Hood River (10-5, 2-0) starter
Connor Coerper and managed just two hits
in the game.
The Eagles finally broke the tie in the
bottom of the sixth when Trevor Lariza
doubled and then Lucas Viuhkola singled to
drive in pinch runner Jacob Smith.
Slade Gritz gave the Bulldogs hope with a
two-out single in the seventh, but a fly out
ended the game.
Hood River jumped on the Bulldogs early
in Game 2 and led 10-1 after two innings.

STANFIELD 18-12, NYSSA 0-2 — At Stanfield,
the Tigers got a pair of runaway wins on Fri-
day and scored 30 runs off 18 hits against
the Bulldogs to stay unbeaten in Eastern
Oregon League play.
Game 1 saw everybody getting in on the
offense for Stanfield (11-1, 5-0 EOL) with
14 hits to go around. Dylan Grogan was
2 for 2 with three runs, Klay Jenson was
2 for 3 with two runs, Brody Woods and
Ryan Bailey each hit 2 for 4 with two RBI,
Shayne Keltz was 1 for 1 with two RBI, and
Thyler Monkus, Adrian Renner and Tony
Flores each had three RBI.
Woods pitched four complete innings for
the win and gave up no runs on two hits
with nine strikeouts and four walks.
Jenson took the mound to start Game 2
and overcame some early control issues
to last five complete with nine strikeouts
and three walks. He allowed both runs on
three hits.
Nyssa took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
first inning after a walk put a runner on and
wild pitches helped bring him around.
Stanfield got it back and then some in the
bottom of the frame, which started with
back-to-back walks followed by back-to-
back errors to make it 3-1.
Hunter Barnes went 2 for 3 with three
RBI to lead Stanfield at the plate, and
Bailey and Flores each drove in two.

Track & field
River’s Edge meet, Umatilla — La Grande
and Enterprise came over the mountains
to claim the boys and girls team titles on
Friday at the River’s Edge meet in Umatilla,
but that didn’t mean it wasn’t a day full of
wins for local athletes.
Irrigon’s Ana Zacarias won the girls’ 100
and 200 in 13.88 and 28.20.
Riverside’s Faith Rosen won the 100
hurdles in 17.47 ahead of Umatilla’s Nancy
Ortiz (17.72), and Ortiz also placed second
in the 300 hurdles (52.30).
Umatilla’s Aleesha Watson (121-6) placed
second in the javelin.
Other notable finishes for girls were
Umatilla’s Maria Moreno-Mendez with
a new personal record of 32-10 to place
second in shot put, and Irrigon’s Alexus
Williams with a PR of 12:27.84 for second
in the 3,000.
Back in boys’ action, Heppner’s Derek
Howard won shot put with 45-11, and
Umatilla’s Alec Williams was second with a
PR of 43-9.5.
Hermiston’s Carson Wrathall had a PR in
pole vault to win with height of 11-6.
Irrigon’s Justin Iveson continued his
dominance in triple jump with a winning
leap of 41-1.

IRRIGON 6-0, ECHO 5-4 — At Irrigon, the
Knights and Tigers split a Special District 1
doubleheader on Friday as errors continued
to plague Irrigon.
The Knights (10-5, 2-1 SD1) were able
to avoid paying for their mistakes in Game
1 thanks to a clutch pinch hit by Karrizma
Luna in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With two outs and two on, Luna snuck a
single down the first-base line to plate the
winning runs.
Echo (5-5, 1-1) had taken a 5-4 lead in the
top of the seventh when Kenzie Gonzales
hit a single to center and Monique Montoya
scored from second base.
Gilman started in the circle and had six
strikeouts before leaving after being hit by
a line drive back up the middle in the third
inning. She was not seriously injured, but
Mya Chapman took her spot on the rubber
and finished out the game of the win. Jada
Burns went 3 for 3 at the plate.
Chapman got the start in Game 2, and
pitched well, but couldn’t get any support
as errors led to all three Echo runs in the
first inning and Cougars starter Alyssa Ray
pitched a three-hit shutout.
RIVERSIDE 27-25, UMATILLA 2-0 — At
Boardman, Skylar Wightman’s threw a
no-hitter in the pitching circle and hit a
home run with eight total RBIs to help her
Riverside Pirates sweep Umatilla 27-2 and
25-0 in an Eastern Oregon League double-
header on Friday afternoon.
Wightman got the win for Riverside
(10-3, 2-1 EOL) in Game 2 after striking out
10 Vikings (1-9, 0-3) as well. The junior also
threw two innings in Game 1 with four
strikeouts, but Bianca Avalos got the win
with five strikeouts in three innings.
Also doing damage at the plate for Riv-
erside was Alexis Villegas (3 for 3, double,
3RBI), Emily Kirby (three hits, five RBI,
triple, double) and Sadie Hasbell collected
three hits. Jocelyn Rodriguez and Lizette
Sanchez also collected their first career
varsity hits.
(BOYS) CAPITAL 6, HERMISTON 2 — At
Hermiston, the Bulldogs struggled through
singles matches before finding some
success in doubles action as they hosted
Capital High School out of Boise, Idaho on
Thursday afternoon.
Hermiston won just nine games out of
the 58 that were played in singles action,
with No. 3 player Hayden Cissna winning
eight games alone. In doubles action,
Hermiston’s top two teams pulled out wins
in third set tie breakers, as top pair Thomas
McCullough and Patrick Wicks won 6-3,
2-6, 10-8 and second pair Koby Grigg and
Jason Morris won 6-1, 1-6, 10-7.

(BOYS) HOOD RIVER 5, HERMISTON 3 — At
Hermiston, while the Bulldogs improved
overall play they still fell short in a district
match against Hood River on Thursday
afternoon.
Hermiston again went 0-4 in singles
matches as head coach Shann West
changed up the singles lineup, with only
Hayden Cissna at No. 3 a constant from
the earlier match. West said the team is
still trying to find out what works.
“We’re trying to figure out how to finish
and get things going in our direction,”
he said. “We had to replace most of our
singles from last year so there’s not a lot of
experience ... it’s still a work-in-progress,
but it’ll come eventually.”
Hermiston won three of the four doubles
matches against Hood River, including
Thomas McCullough and Patrick Wicks’
second win of the day in straight sets 6-3,
6-3. Caleb Jorgenson and Jose Mendoza

1 girls doubles team, which won 8-3 over
Amanda Carrillo and Brianna Cornejo.
“They need more matches together and it
showed today, but they pulled it through
against Stanfield today.”
Cornejo picked up a win 8-1 over Karina
Saldana in No. 1 singles, and Hank Gehrke
won the No. 1 boys singles match 8-1 over
Ian Miller.
“We have a young boys team but are
getting better every day,” Sanchez said.
“Both boys are freshmen and are playing
varsity matches their first year, but are up
to the challenge.”
