STORM BRINGS HOME
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP HARDWARE
By JOHN TABER
For the Hermiston Herald
A Hermiston basketball
team won a state champi-
onship earlier this month at
the Oregon Middle School
State Basketball Champi-
onships in Bend and Red-
mond March 3-5.
The tournament hosts
teams from all over the
state, separating the gold
and silver divisions based
largely on the size of the
high schools into which the
qualifying teams will feed.
Hermiston Storm is
comprised of 6th and 7th
graders from Sandstone
and Armand Larive Mid-
dle Schools in Hermiston,
Clara Brownell Middle
School in Umatilla, and
Echo Middle School. The
Storm dominated the com-
petition in the gold brack-
et, beating teams from
Canby, South Eugene,
Sherwood, and West Linn.
In the championship game,
Hermiston defeated West
Linn in a 33-29 nailbiter.
The Storm are a Herm-
iston Basketball Club team,
and placed second in the
same division last season.
Hermiston High golf team hosts fundraiser
The Hermiston High
School Golf Association
is holding a two-person
scramble tournament
fundraiser at Big River
Golf Course on April 22.
The scramble will
begin at 9 a.m. with a
shotgun start, and it will
also include raffle prizes,
a putting contest and other
contests at various holes
throughout the course, as
well as a barbecue meal
afterwards.
The entry fee is $60
per-person for adults,
and $40 per-person for
students, and cart fees are
not included. Checks can
be made payable to HHS
Golf Association, and
entry forms can be turned
in to Big River Golf
Course.
For more information,
contact tournament
directors Bob Brinkley
at 541-571-4647 or Karl
Adams at 541-561-7044.
The Umatilla boys bas-
ketball team had quite the
turnaround in 2016-17,
finishing 17-8 overall and
8-2 in the Eastern Oregon
League to help clinch both
league and district cham-
pionships for the Vikings.
The continued growth
and improvement of Vi-
kings’ junior guard Kaden
Webb was a big reason for
the dominant season, and
the EOL coaches realized
that as well as Webb was
named as the league’s Play-
er of the Year. Webb was a
first team all-league mem-
ber last season, but took
his game to a new level as
Umatilla’s leading scorer,
go-to ball handler and the
top perimeter defender.
Webb was joined by
three teammates on the
all-league teams, as junior
wing Seth Cranston earned
first team honors while se-
nior wing Justin Maret and
sophomore guard Sebas-
tian Garcia earned second
team honors.
Irrigon, who finished
second in the league in
the school’s first season at
the Class 3A level, earned
three selections with se-
nior Austin Rice and
Hayden White on the first
team and junior post John-
ny Philips on second team.
Riverside senior Eon Cas-
tillo was the Pirates’ lone
all-league selection.
On the girls side, two
locals earned first team
selections as Umatilla’s
do-it-all player Aleesha
Watson and Irrigon’s go-
to scorer Jada Burns both

ing the second team and
