Boardman chamber recognizes citizens at awards banquet

The Boardman Chamber
of Commerce recently cel-
ebrated residents that help
in making the town a vi-
brant community.
In its 27th year, the an-
nual awards banquet was
held Feb. 10 at the Port of
Morrow. Those recognized
include:
Sam Toms, Citizen of
the Year. Known as “Stan
the Man,” Toms is said to
be the go-to person when
senior citizens are in need,
especially in regards to
transportation. Regardless
of where they need to go,
Boardman’s senior citizens
can always count on Toms
to get them there, said a
press release from cham-
ber executive Julie Gisi.
Karen Purcell, Busi-
ness Person of the Year.
Owner of The Sunrise at
Boardman Café, Purcell
was recognized for her
commitment to the com-
munity through her gen-
erosity and continuous in-
volvement.
Adam Cole, Fire &
Safety Award. A firefighter
with the Boardman Rural
Fire Protection District,
Cole is dedicated to the
community providing fire
safety education, involve-
ment with community
events and youth sports.
Collin Dunlap, Educa-
tor of the Year. The Riv-
erside Jr/Sr High School
music teacher, Dunlap was
nominated by co-workers
and students for his enthu-
siasm regarding perform-
ing arts.
Selene Andrade, Youth
of the Year. A senior at Riv-
erside Jr/Sr High School,
Andrade was recognized
for her enthusiasm, attitude,
dedication and for being a
role model for others.
In addition to the regu-
lar awards, several others
were honored with special
recognition.
“These special awards
are just an extra boost of
how great our community
is,” Gisi said.
Linda Toms, Special
Award. After 30 years
of business, she recently
closed the doors to The
Mouse Factory. The suc-
cess of Toms’ business,
Gisi said, was due to good
business sense, her com-
mitment and involvement
with others.
Nicholas Richardson
and Adolfo Martinez,
Life Saving Awards. The
men alerted two families
about a fire in their duplex.
Due to their quick action,
both families, which in-
cluded infants, escaped
safely without injury.
Gisi said people can sub-
mit nominations through-
out the year.

speed of over 130 mph is unsafe
and I will not drive that fast on a
public road again. There are

high speeds responsibly and I
will follow the rules and will only
attend these events in the
future. I hope that through this
letter we can begin to make up
