ATHENA — With a deep
bench that allows coach Ja-
son Sperr to rotate players
sometimes five at a time, the
Stanfield boys basketball
team has been able to stay
fresh for the second half.
It’s a strategy that’s paid
a lot of dividends already for
the No. 4 Tigers, and led to
another win Saturday on the
road against Weston-McE-
wen when they pulled away
in the second half for an 85-
60 victory.

Garcia said he could notice
a drop-off by the TigerScots
in the second half.
“The

half
(Weston-McEwen)
was
right there with us but the
second half we took off
because our legs weren’t
tired and we could tell they
were,” he said. “It was the
same thing with the Hep-
pner game last week and a
few before that, the first half
they’re with us and the sec-

tations we didn’t really like
it or trust it at first,” he said.

wanted to regroup, reset and
just go and I could tell when
I walked into the gym today
there was just a different air.
The girls played really well
tonight doing things better
on offense and defense that
they’re certainly capable of
doing.”
Junior point guard Chel-
sea Quaempts scored a
game-high 25 points for
Weston-McEwen
(10-5,
2-1 CBC), with 19 of those
points coming in the first
quarter.
Stanfield (3-11, 1-3) was
able to weather the storm a
bit through the middle parts
of the game, outscoring
Weston-McEwen 22-18 over
the second and third quarters.
It left the TigerScots with
a 45-27 lead and the Tigers
holding momentum.
Stanfield’s offense was
led by Natalia Esquivel
with 13 points and Kend-
ra Hart had 11 points. Also
reaching double-digits for
Weston-McEwen was Katie
Vescio with 12 points.
Stanfield will next host
Pilot Rock on Friday.
