Irrigon in first
league game
Hermiston Herald
CULVER — The Stan-
field Tigers had all 13 players
score at least one field goal as
the Tigers ran past the Culver
Bulldogs 89-59 on Saturday
afternoon.
“We
played
well,
jumped on Culver in the
first half and gained some
momentum that we car-
ried throughout,” Stanfield
coach Jason Sperr said.
“We were able to rest some
guys and get other guys
some playing time and it
was nice to see all 13 guys
score.
“We had a good weekend
and we got the start we need-
ed to have in league and the
guys are excited for what’s
next.”
Dylan Grogan led Stan-
field (11-1, 2-0 CBC) with
17 points, Brody Woods
had 12 and both Noe San-
chez and Jose Garcia each
had nine points. Mike Da-
vis, Jr. of Culver (0-12,
0-2) had a game-high 30
points.
Stanfield hosted Prescott
(WA) on Tuesday after the
press deadline and will travel
to Weston-McEwen on Sat-
urday for a 7 p.m. game.

nitely still has some strides
to make, as everyone does,
but he just has an extra step
of quickness than most of the
other guys on the floor. It’ll
be a tough matchup for teams
going forward especially in
the man-to-man because he’s
so quick.”
It was La Grande that got
the first burst out of the gates,
taking a quick 5-0 lead on

WESTON-MCEWEN
53, HEPPNER 49 — The
Weston-McEwen TigerScots
won their league opener by
grinding out a 53-49 win
against the Heppner Mus-
tangs on Saturday night.
Heppner started the game
with everything going its
way, driving the lane and
getting in the paint at will
and finding open guys along
the perimeter enough to hold
a 18-9 lead at the end of the
first quarter. But from that
point on, Weston-McEwen
slowly chipped away at the
lead.
The TigerScots (8-5, 1-0
CBC) tied the game at 49-49
with under one minute left
to play before Ethan Reger
scored the go-ahead basket
and Quanah Picard sank two
free throws with just seconds
left on the clock to seal the
win.
“We made some good ad-
justments in the second half
and responded well to (Hep-
pner’s) defensive changes,”
Weston-McEwen coach Bri-
an Pickard said.
Garrett Hungerford nailed
four 3-pointers and scored 16
points for Weston-McEwen,
while Shaw Broncheau and
Brett Speed each had 12. Lo-
gan Grieb led Heppner (8-4,
Hermiston as La Grande’s
speed and length seemed to
surprise the Bulldogs. How-
ever, Hermiston gathered
themselves and soon found its
stride outscoring La Grande
17-6 the rest of the quarter,
helped by three big 3-pointers
by sophomore guard Andrew
James, who ended the game
with 14 points.
La Grande made a run at
the start of the second quarter,
a 9-1 push to eventually re-
take a lead at 20-18. But the
lead lasted all of 35 seconds as
0-2) with 18 points and four
3-pointers and Nikalos Dias
Martins had 13.
Weston-McEwen next
heads to Pilot Rock on Fri-
day, while Heppner hosts
Culver.

Kaden Webb scored a game-
high 28 points to carry the
Umatilla Vikings to a 66-48
win over the Irrigon Knights
in the Vikings’ league opener
on Saturday evening.
Behind Webb, Seth Carn-
ston and Justin Maret also
scored 10 points apiece for
Umatilla (9-5, 1-0 EOL),
while Hayden White scored
20 to lead Irrigon (8-5, 1-1)
and Austin Rice had 17.

to play at Riverside Tuesday
and will host Burns on Fri-
day, while Irrigon hosts Vale
on Friday.
————
CULVER 36, STAN-
Hermiston sophomore Cesar
Ortiz nailed a 3-pointer to put
Hermiston back on top 21-20
and the Bulldogs did not relin-
quish that lead until late in the
third quarter.
The Bulldogs offense fell
a little stale in that third quar-
ter as La Grande’s defense
picked up the pressure, re-
sulting in some easy buckets
for the Tigers to propel them
into a 44-43 lead at the end of
three. Arstein said the mes-
sage in the huddle between
quarters was simple: just play
smart.
“I just said we need to get
smart defensive stops,” he
said. “We’re going to miss
shots, and that’s OK, but we
were giving up transition
buckets, tipped rebounds and
our defensive mistakes added
up in the third and we needed
to clean it up.”
And the talk worked, as
Hermiston shot 6-11 from
the floor in the quarter and
outscored La Grande 19-10
to pull away for the victory.
