WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 2017 HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A9 Herald Sports Bulldogs tested in The Clash tourney Hermiston Herald The Hermiston wrestling team traveled to Minnesota looking to get battle tested against some elite programs, and wasn’t let down by the brackets at The Clash XV. The Bulldogs won just a single dual, going 1-5 against midwestern oppo- nents over the two days, but were competitive in all but one dual. Hermiston’s first match- up in Bracket D also proved to be its toughest as it lost to St. Michael-Albertville (MN) 65-9 on Friday. A loss to Plattsmouth (NE) by a much more re- spectable 44-26 margin followed, but the Bulldogs rebounded to finish the day with a 34-31 win over Pewaukee (WI) for a sev- enth-place finish. Saturday’s round rob- in consisted of four-team groups based on their previ- ous day’s finish. Hermiston went 0-3 with losses to Glenbard North (IL), 48-30, Foley (MN), 43-28, and Kenyon-Wana- mingo (MN) 42-31. Senior Valen Wyse led the Bulldogs with five wins at 170 pounds, all by pin in either the first or second round. His only loss was to St. Michael-Albertville senior Jake Allar, the 2016 Minnesota state champion and 2016 Junior National freestyle champion, by an 18-1 technical fall. Senior Beau Blake won four times and also picked up a forfeit at 285. He earned three wins on points and then capped his trip Follow sports on Twitter @HHeraldSports PREP ROUNDUP with a 25-second pin over Kenyon Wanamingo’s Aus- tin Evert that was the quick- est win of the tournament for a Bulldog. Sophomore Ruben Mad- rigal (106 pounds) also won four times, and three-match winners were junior Kenny Bevan (195), senior Julio Leiva (182), and senior Je- sus Rodriguez (126). Hermiston’s win over Pewaukee began with a sec- ond-round pin by Wyse, but Pewaukee won the next four in a row to go up 21-6. Madrigal stopped the bleeding with a 13-2 major decision, then Gage Shipley (113) and Rodriguez won with pins while Pewaukee took the 120-pound bout with a pin to make the score 27-22. A double forfeit at 132 meant neither team scored, and Pewaukee went up 31- 22 with a 10-1 major deci- sion at 138 pounds. Senior Wade Kirkpatrick started the comeback with a 7-1 win at 145, then senior Oscar Lopez hung on for a 10-7 win to make it 31-28. Needing at least a major decision for the win, junior Zach Kirkpatrick sealed it with a pin at the buzzer in the second period over sophomore Jacob Baker. Hermiston will remain in dual mode until heading to the Reser’s Tournament of Champions at the end of the month. The Bulldogs’ next match is Wednesday, Jan. 11, when they host The Dalles at 7 p.m. Then they’ll head to the Oregon Classic Jan. 13-14. HEPPNER 53, WAITSBURG 51 — At Irrigon, Jake Lindsay sank a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to seal a victory for the Mustangs on Friday at the Irrigon Tournament. Lindsay finished with 14 points, six as- sists and five rebounds, and Heppner (7-2) was led by Logan Grieb with 25 points. Coach Jeremy Rosenbalm said he knew Waitsburg’s tall lineup would be the biggest challenge in the game, and he was thrilled to see Heppner out-rebound them 34-22. Kevin Murray and Kevin Smith each had 10 board to lead them there, and Grieb added six. Heppner hosts Union for a non-league game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. STEVENSON 78, RIVERSIDE 56 — At Boardman, Austin Brannan was unstoppa- ble and hit contested shot after contest- ed shot for 37 points against Riverside on Friday in a non-league game. He sank eight three-pointers. Felix Aparico led Riverside (4-4) with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks, and Eon Castillo also had 14 points. The loss also came with the potential loss of captain Noe Madrigal to a leg injury. IRRIGON 56, PILOT ROCK 53 — At Irri- gon, Johnny Philips scored 17 points and Hayden White added 14 as the Knights did just enough to hold off the Rockets on Friday night at the Irrigon Tournament. Irrigon (5-4) saw its double-digit lead slipping away down the stretch due to turnovers, but Pilot Rock (7-3) wasn’t able to catch them and hit a shot at the buzzer to get the final tally. Scores, but no details from Friday — In other local boys’ basketball on Friday it was Umatilla over Creswell, 60-57; and Dufur over Echo, 60-36. HERMISTON 53, SILVERTON 45 — At Silverton, the teams came out of the half tied at 27-27 and the No. 9 Bulldogs were able to outlast No. 23 Silverton for a non- league win on Thursday night. Hermiston rallied after Silverton took a 10-0 lead to start the game, and buckled down defensively after halftime allowing just 18 points. Xavier Rambo scored 16 points to lead Hermiston (8-2), Chance Flores added 12 and Hunter Walls was 3-for-5 from the 3-point line and chipped in 11. Hermiston led 41-38 after three quarters. Cade Roth scored 15 points to lead Silverton (2-6) and Levi Nielsen added 10. Hermiston’s next game is a home non- league tilt with AC Davis (WA) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. did enough to pull out the win.” Heppner (6-2) led 19-12 at halftime and didn’t allow any Mac-Hi (4-5) player to reach double digits. Alex Delgado led them with nine. Both teams remain in tournament play today with Heppner facing Waitsburg at 1:30 p.m. Details for Mac-Hi’s game were not available at press time. ——— HHS 11 8 16 9 — 44 M-H 6 6 12 10 — 34 HEPPNER — L. RIVERSIDE 66, IONE 44 — At Boardman, the Pirates cleaned up their defense and found their outside touch to open things up in the second half of their non-league win over Ione on Thursday. Riverside (4-3) outscored Ione (1-7) 22-8 in the third quarter and hit four three-pointers in the frame, which coach Clair Costello said then led to more open lanes for dribble penetration. The Pirates were led by Eon Castillo with 20 points and five steals. Noe Madri- gal added 11 points. Wyatt McNary had 16 points to lead Ione and Austin Carter chipped in 12 more. Austin Rice led Irrigon (4-4) with 14 points and Johnny Philips added 11, but was in foul trouble early. Hayden White also battled foul trouble and finished with seven points after fouling out. Rachel Willingham, Bekah Roe and Rhyanne Oates drew the assignment and Rockets coach Butch Wilson said they’d been preparing for Burns all week. Willingham also came up big on offense with 12 points, and Kayla Deist led Pilot Rock (9-1) with 15 points.
