WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2016 Bevan, Wyse win titles for Dawgs Hermiston places sixth at tourney Hermiston Herald Hermiston junior Ken- ny Bevan made his season debut in style as one of two champions for the sixth- place Bulldogs at Best Of The West on Thursday at Pasco High School. Wrestling at 195 pounds in the two-day tournament that combines duals and an individual bracket, Bevan bounced back from his first loss of the season to beat Chiawana’s Clayton Sil- vers, 11-9, in the champi- onship match. Valen Wyse at 170 pounds was Herm- iston’s other champion, and Beau Blake placed second at 285. Bevan had lost to Silvers, 7-2, on Wednesday during Hermiston’s 40-30 win over Chiawana (WA) for third place in the dual portion of the tournament. “Sometimes in dual meets there’s a lot on the line because your team is right there yelling, the other team is right there yelling for their guy, so he was pret- ty down on himself and dis- couraged,” said Hermiston coach Kyle Larson. “But he HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A9 SPORTS/ CLASSIFIEDS PREP ROUNDUP Hermiston Herald HERMISTON 92, ASHLAND 66 — Xavier Rambo scored 30 points and four Bulldogs reached double digits as the Hermiston boys basketball made a serious run at 100 on Wednesday in a non-league game against Ashland in Corvallis. Hermiston was in control the entire way of its 92-66 rout of the Rebels at the Crescent Valley Tournament, and also got big games from Chance Flores (18 points), Hunter Walls (13 points) and Jordan Ramirez (11 points). Hermiston (7-2) found its groove right away and forced some early turnovers by Ashland (3-4) to help build a 21-9 lead after one quarter. “We got out and ran a little bit,” said Hermiston coach Casey Arstein. “The kids stepped up and did a better job of taking care of the ball and making better decisions on offense, and attacking the rim.” picked himself up and came back and got the win.” Bevan pinned his first two opponents in a com- bined 5:06 on Thursday, then won, 14-6, in the semifinals to bring up the rematch with Silvers. Lar- son said he’s seen a big im- provement in the returning state qualifier. “Kenny put in a ton of time in the offseason,” Larson said, adding Bevan wrestled 46 matches be- tween March and June. “We really preach that as part of our system, and he’s one guy that bought into that and went and did that. He has improved a ton over the spring and summer.” Wyse took a more direct route to his championship than Bevan and dominated each of his eight opponents. He won with three pins and major decision in the duals, and in the bracketed por- tion Wyse won with a pair of pins and a tech-fall that went a combined 6:37 to reach the championship. Blake was cruising right along in his bracket as well with a pair of pins and a 10-3 win in the semifinals until running into Seer Deines of Connell (WA) in the championship where he lost, 6-0. ——— AHS 9 23 21 13 — 66 HHS 21 31 21 19 — 92 ASHLAND — P. The first shot of the one-and-one oppor- tunity was good to lift the Panthers out of Kennewick, Wash., to a 49-48 win. “I wasn’t very happy,” said Umatilla coach Derrek Lete, “but I didn’t at all blame it on that call right there.” Despite a strong second-half effort to erase their nine-point halftime deficit, Lete said Umatilla (6-3) didn’t put in a complete enough effort to reasonably expect their fourth win in a row.
