At John Day, the Heppner

night by traveling south to
beat the Grant Union Pros-

“We won on the de-
fensive end of the floor

Jeremy Rosenbalm said.
“Grant Union is always a
tough place to play, and I’m
pleased with how the boys
responded after a long trip

was there.
“That’s really where the
difference came from in the
game.”

“(Seth) just brought us
energy,” Umatilla coach
Derek Lete said. “You could
tell us not being in the gym
for four days had an effect.
We came out flat, lacked
intensity on defense and the
effort just wasn’t there.
“But Seth came with en-

Line, Neal grab all-state honors
By ERIC SINGER
Staff writer
If you watched any
Hermiston football games
this season, there were two
players that stood out —
Dayshawn Neal on offense
and John-Henry Line on de-
fense.
It seems that other Class
5A coaches felt the same
way, as both players were
selected to the all-state team
this week with Line a first
team selection at defensive
line and Neal a second team
selection at wide receiver.
“I’m pretty happy,” Line
said. “To see all of the hard
work pay off and to get no-
ticed by other coaches is a
great feeling.”
“It means a lot,” Neal
added. “Gotta give a shout
out to my coaches, team-
mates, everyone who sup-
ported me really.”
Line’s selection follows
us his first team all-league
and Co-Defensive Player
of the Year honor for Spe-
cial District 1 this season.
His road to success is owed
to a meeting between Line
and the Hermiston coach-
es, as he was moved from
his middle linebacker spot
to defensive end following
Hermiston’s Week 1 game
against Union (WA).
“It was all about find-
ing the right position for
me,” he said. “The coach-
es thought I could go up
against some bigger guys,
and it worked out.”
The move more than
worked out for Hermis-
ton and Line, as the 6-1,
225-pound senior went on
to rack up 99 total tackles,
22.5 tackles-for-loss, 15.5
sacks, and seven more quar-
terback pressures on the
season — all team highs.
Aside from the statistics,
he was also a leader of a
fierce Bulldog defense that
allowed an average of just
10.2 points per game over
the final five regular season
games. During that stretch,
Hermiston went 4-1 as a
team to secure a playoff
spot for the sixth straight
season.
Line says he owes it all
to his coaches.
“They believed in me
and taught me everything
on how to play end,” he
said. “And having Coach
(David) Faaeteete be a Di-
vision I lineman at Oregon
when he played, it really
helped a lot.”
After playing quarter-
back for half a season in
2015, Neal switched back
to his natural position at
wide receiver and shined
from the start. In Hermis-
ton’s opener against Union,
Neal caught 12 passes for
212 yards and three touch-
downs, and instantly be-
came the go-to target for
quarterback Andrew James.
For the season, Neal
finished with 51 catch-
es for 911 yards and 12
touchdowns, which are all
team-highs. Neal’s totals
also placed him high in the
Class 5A leaderboards, fin-
ishing second in catches,
tied for second in yardage,
and tied for third in touch-
downs.
Neal said he wasn’t sur-
prised at his breakout sea-
son, and that he got a feel-
ing that he could be in for
a special season during the
summer workout sessions.
“During summer when
we were playing 7-on-7
games and tournaments,”
he said, “I knew if Andrew
and I could keep the chem-
istry between us and me
make him trust throwing
the ball to me, we could do
something special.”
Now Neal and James
have an entire offseason to
continue to develop chem-
istry to make Hermiston an
even better team next sea-
son, and to also help Neal
achieve a new goal.
“I’m honored (for second
team),” he says, “but at the
same time that sets a new
goal for me for next season,
gotta get that first team.”

Hermiston places eighth at Tri-State tournament
The Hermiston Bull-
dogs wrestling team spent
the weekend at North Idaho
College taking part in the
45th Annual Tri-State Tour-
nament where the team fin-
ished tied for eighth place
out of 60 teams.
The Bulldogs racked up
116 points to finish dead
even with Lake Stevens
(Washington) for eighth
place. Havre (Montana) won
the tournament with 184
points.
In the tournament, Herm-
iston had just three wrestlers
that earned spots on the po-
dium out of 15 total compet-
itors. Valen Wyse was the
high finisher, taking second
place at 170 pounds after
he was disqualified in the
championship match, hand-
ing Wyse his first loss of the
season.
At 145 pounds, CJ Hen-
don (9-3) finished sixth after
losing to Ryden Fu of Taho-
ma by a 5-1 decision, and
Joey Gutierrez (11-2) took
fourth place at 182 pounds
following a loss by fall to
Winston Scott of East Valley
(WA) at 3:18.
Hermiston next heads to
the Best of the West Tour-
nament in Pasco (WA) on
Wednesday afternoon.
MAC-HI CHRISTMAS
TOURNAMENT — At Mil-
ton-Freewater, the Mac-Hi
Pioneers and Irrigon Knights
both turned in top-3 team fin-
ishes, while Hermiston’s JV
finished sixth and Heppner
finished eighth on Saturday.
Mac-Hi finished second
with 197.5 points and Irrigon
was third with 162 points.
Kamiakin (Washington) won
the tournament with 230.5
points, while Hermiston had
94.5 and Heppner had 67.
Irrigon coach Jason Dunt-
en said he was thrilled with
his team’s third place finish.
“At this tournament last
year we took seventh and
we’ve come a long ways
now,” Dunten said. “The
kids are really coming along
and actually showing great
signs of improvement.”
Irrigon did not have any
champions in the tourna-
ment, but did finish with 14
placers on the day and five
top-3 finishes. Silvestre Ol-
guin-Vasquez was second at
132 pounds, Manny Guti-
errez third at 138 pounds,
Jose Romero second at 145
pounds, Josue Aguilera third
at 152 pounds, and Alex
Walls third at 160 pounds.
Heppner’s day was high-
lighted by Cord Flynn’s
championship at 220 pounds,
when he pinned Southridge’s
Atsamaz Pliev at the 3:30
mark of the match, keeping
his season record at a per-
fect 8-0. Heppner nearly had
two championships on the
day, though, but Trevor An-
tonucci came up short at 113
pounds as he lost to Tanner
Bushman by pin at 1:42 to
settle for second place.
