ANNIVERSARY
John and Pat Edmundson
of Heppner are celebrating their
60th anniversary with a family
celebration Friday, Dec. 23, at
their son Jeff Edmundson’s home
in Hermiston.
John Edmundson and Patricia
Dorine Turner were married Dec.
29, 1956, at the Calvary Baptist
Church in The Dalles.
John and Pat first met in their
seventh grade math class at Hood
River Junior High School. The
romance blossomed during the
school’s noontime dances, and
the area church parties and hay-
rides. When Pat’s family moved
to The Dalles, the couple main-
tained their long-distance rela-
tionship via mail, train, bus and

Pat received her engagement
ring at a celebratory dinner
hosted by John’s aunt and uncle
in Yakima, where John was at-
tending military training at the
U.S. Army Yakima Firing Cen-
ter with the U.S. Army Reserve.
The couple was married over
their college winter break, with
John graduating from Willamette
University in 1957 and Pat from
Oregon College of Education in
1958.
John and Pat have three
children: daughters Vicki Ed-
mundson, Baker City, and Kris-
ti Smalley and husband Mark,
Hermiston, and son Jeff Ed-
mundson and wife Sheila, also
of Hermiston. They also have
six granddaughters: Emily (Ed-
mundson) Wurtz (Brandon),
Boise; Erin (Brookshire) Lair
Hermiston police. Officers, however,
were unable to locate the juveniles.
Umatilla, reported his uncle’s car was
stolen sometime during the night.
Umatilla police are investigating.
10:04 a.m. - Hermiston police
responded to Dutch Brothers, 660
N. First St., Hermiston, after a
caller reported a man was lying in the
middle of the road, stopping traffic,
and trying to open the caller’s trunk.
Hermiston police lodged the man at
the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton,
on misdemeanor disorderly conduct
and resisting arrest charges.
12:06 p.m. - An employee at Tom
Denchel Ford, 555 S. Highway 395,
Hermiston, reported the back window
was broken out of a car on the lot and
another was keyed sometime during
the night.
12:07 p.m. - The Oregon State
Police East Region Explosives Unit
were called to a residence on Lena
Street, Stanfield, after a maintenance
crew found a possible explosive
device in the home, a foreclosure,
after tenants were evicted. The device
consisted of six 10-minute road flares
and an older flip-style cellphone
taped together with electrical tape.
The device also had black, white and
green residential-type wires attached
to it. The device was released to the
Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office for
forensic follow-up.
12:18 p.m. - Umatilla police were
called after an alleged drunk driver
almost hit a pedestrian on Uma-
tilla River Road and Bonney Lane,
Umatilla.
2:17 p.m. - Hermiston police were
notified of a possible cougar sighting
at Oxbow Trail No. 1, Southwest 23rd
Street and West Orchard Extension.
6:40 p.m. - Three juveniles who
broke into Hermiston High School, 600
S. First St., filmed the illegal entry and
a parent sent the video to the district
director of operations, who called

8:31 a.m. - Thieves broke out
the window of a vehicle parked at
Oxbow Trail, West Elm Extension and
Northwest 11th Street, Hermiston, and
stole a purse and cell phone.
1:27 p.m. - A man who thought
his friends were playing a joke on him
finally reported his gray 1998 Ford
Taurus stolen from Eldorado Apart-
ments, 245 N.W. 11th St., Hermiston.
The caller said the vehicle has been
gone since sometime in October.
6:22 p.m. - Umatilla police were
called to the Riverside Sports Bar
and Lounge, 1501 Sixth St., for a man
who reported he was assaulted by a
woman. The man was bleeding from
the nose and hand, but claimed he
didn’t touch the woman. He declined
medical assistance.
8:25 p.m. - A passerby reported
a fire hydrant lying in the middle of
the street outside Our Lady of Angels

westbound on I-84 near milepost
176 at a high rate of speed failed to
notice a vehicle in front of it was
traveling much slower due to me-
chanical issues. The following vehicle
rear-ended the slower one, which
ended up on the north shoulder of
the road while the other came to rest
in the median. No one was injured,
according to OSP.
