CHiPs star Erik Estrada revs up live game show
By TAMMY MALGESINI
Community Editor
Best known for his role as
Frank “Ponch” Poncherel-
lo from 1977-83 on NBC’s
“CHiPs,” Erik Estrada is
cruising into Eastern Or-
egon to host a live game
show at Wildhorse Resort &
Casino.
Enthusiastic about the
event that guarantees more
than $35,000 in cash and
free game play, fans will
have a chance to win mon-
ey and see Estrada during
“America’s Greatest Game
Shows.” The shows are Sat-
urday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
in the Rivers Event Center
at the casino, which is lo-
cated off Highway 331 near
Interstate 84 at Exit 216,
Mission.
“It’s a blast up there,”
Estrada said about hosting
the show. “Plus, someone
will have a chance to win
$100,000.”
People can earn entries
for an opportunity to be in
the audience the rest of the
week by playing games at
the casino. Drawings for
seats are Thursday and Fri-
day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Contestants will be picked
from the audience.
Early on, Estrada want-
ed to be a New York City
policeman. However, he
got sidetracked when a girl
in the school’s drama club
caught his eye.
“The next thing you
know, I started chasing the
acting career,” Estrada said.
“Then I got lucky to play a
cop on TV.”
Over the years, the ac-
tor has had opportunities
to help kids in a big way.
Downplaying being re-
ferred to as a role model,
Estrada said “It’s my pas-
sion.”
In real life, the man
who once played a cop on
TV has worked with law
enforcement agencies to
help keep kids safe online.
Recently, he was sworn in

as a reserve offi cer with
the St. Anthony Police De-
partment in Idaho — and it
wasn’t merely a publicity
stunt.
Among the programs
Estrada has been involved
with are the Safe Surfi n’
Foundation and the Internet
Crimes Against Children
Task Force. The projects
aim to protect children
from sexual predators who
prowl chat rooms and so-
cial media sites in search of
their next victim.
“They will take time to
groom kids ... the bad guy
is only a click away on
your phone or computer,”
he said.
Estrada has been involved
with “America’s Greatest
Game Shows” for a couple
of years. It features many of
the familiar game show clas-
sics — with a twist. Contes-
tants and audience members
will have fun, Estrada said,
with “The NOT So Newly-
wed Game” and “Dancing
With Yourself.”
And, the best part, Estra-
da said, “Everyone wins.”
