Tigers claim title with win over Mustangs
Stanfield shuts
out Heppner in
defensive battle
Hermiston Herald
The Stanfield Tigers
picked up one of the big-
gest wins in program his-
tory Friday after outlasting
the Heppner Mustangs,
14-0, in a defensive battle
of Columbia Basin Confer-
ence unbeatens in Heppner.
The Tigers scored on
their second possession
when quarterback Dylan
Grogan connected with
Brody Woods for a 30-yard
touchdown, then won the
field position battle the rest
of the way before adding
another touchdown in the
closing minutes.
The win locked up the
Tigers’ first league title
since 1957.
“It was a great game,
definitely
looked
like
a league championship
game,” said second-year
Stanfield coach Davy Salas.
“It’s been a long time com-

ing for the town of Stan-
field and these kids. All the
hard work is paying off and
we’re heading in the right
direction this season.”
Heppner (6-2, 3-1 CBC)
was without senior running
back Logan Grieb, and
wasn’t able to get much go-
ing against a tenacious Ti-
gers defense. Stanfield (7-1,
3-0) held the Mustangs to
134 yards of total offense.
“They kind of load-
ed the box, and we had a
couple shots throwing the
football, we just couldn’t
get any consistency,” said
Heppner coach Greg Grant.
“We had a few chances, we
moved the ball, a first down
here and there, we just nev-
er were able to sustain a
drive.”
Heppner’s defense also
gave the Tigers fits, though,
and Jake Lindsay intercept-
ed Dylan Grogan twice
while Jason Rae added an-
other pick. The Mustangs
held Stanfield well below
its season rushing average
and limited senior running
back Thyler Monkus to
48 yards on 11 carries, but
Worship
Grogan was able to run
for 101 yards on 19 rushes
while doing just enough
in the passing game to
keep the Mustangs from
teeing off.
“That was the biggest
difference between this
year and last year,” Grant
said. “They hurt us with
the pass, and they were
able to throw the ball and
keep us of balance a little
bit.”
“(Heppner) just game-
planned very well for
our run game and we
had to find opportunities
to move the ball,” Salas
said. “We were able to
pass protect and find an
advantage in some situa-
tions.”
Stanfield finished with
343 total yards of offense.
Grogan was 13-of-20
passing for 175 yards,
and Woods hauled in
six catches for 97 yards.
Monkus’ 48 yards put him
up to 1,046 for the season.
Stanfield will close out
the regular season Friday
when it hosts Pilot Rock
at 7 p.m.
Heppner is off until
the first round of the state
playoffs, Nov. 4-5.
