Joan P. Greene, longtime
Hermiston resident, was
born on August 31, 1926,
in Weiser, Idaho, to parents
Frank and Elaine Johnson
Townley. She died
on October 15, 2016,
in Hermiston, Ore-
gon, at the age of 90
years.
She was raised
and attended schools
in Weiser, Idaho.
Joan was united in Greene
marriage to Virgil
L. Greene on December 27,
1950, in Winnemucca, Nev.
They lived in Weiser, Idaho,
before moving to Hermis-
ton, Oregon, in 1954 where
she has lived since.
Joan worked at the Uma-
tilla Army Depot for a time
and then for many years
as the bookkeeper for LA
Moore Furniture. She en-
joyed camping, hunting,
ishing, rock collecting, her
lower garden, and picking
huckleberries in the moun-
tains. She was a former
member of the Hermiston
Eagles Lodge.
She is survived by her
sons Jeff Greene and wife
Carol, Hermiston, Ore.,
and Gary Greene and wife
Sandi, Stanield, Ore.;
daughters Janice Gibbs and
husband Zane, Stanield,
Ore., and Debra Hickey,
Hermiston, Ore.; grandchil-
dren Jeffrey, Cassie, Ryan,
Travis, Mateo, Nick-
ola, Thalia, Lindsey,
Zane and Chance; 17
great-grandchildren;
and numerous niec-
es, and nephews.
Joan was preced-
ed in death by her
husband of 64 years,
Virgil Greene, in
March of 2015; her parents;
and two brothers, Jim and
Tim Townley.
A celebration of life ser-
vice will be held on Friday,
October 21, 2016, at 11:00
a.m. at Burns Mortuary
chapel, Hermiston, Oregon.
Private family burial will
be at the Echo Cemetery,
Echo, Oregon.

Plymouth passed away Sun-
day, Oct. 16, 2016.
Emma was born to Paul
Frederick Deusen and
Cora Marie (Ehfe)
Deusen on Jan. 26,
1917, at home near
New Plymouth, Ida-
ho.
She attended Sun-
nyside School for two
years, transferring Linder
to New Plymouth
where she graduated
in 1936.
She
married
Wheeler
Calvin
Linder on Dec. 24,
1938. They lived in
New Plymouth un-
til 1941 when they Linder
moved to Hermiston,
Ore. Wheeler passed away
in 1957. Emma worked at
the Army Depot Ordnance
from 1959 to 1973. She then
moved to Boise and worked
at the Veterans Hospital until
she retired in 1979.
Emma enjoyed all kinds
of handiwork, especially
embroidery and crocheting.
She made many afghans and
kitchen towels for family
and friends. She also liked
working in her yards.
In 2004, she moved to
New Plymouth where she
resided until moving in
2016 to an assisted living
facility in Fruitland. Emma
was a member of American
Legion Auxiliary of Herm-
iston, Ore., since 1946, the
New Plymouth Senior Citi-
zens, and the Priscilla Club.
Emma is survived three
sons, Paul Charles (Hyeja)
of Portland, Ore., William

2:14 a.m. - A white Chevy car with
a female driver stopped in the middle
of the road in the wrong lane at the
intersection of E. Highland Ave. and
S. Highway 395, Hermiston, and was
waiting for a “non-existent light to
change.” The person who reported
the incident believed the woman was
intoxicated, but police couldn’t ind
the vehicle.
11:47 a.m. - A woman with a
broken foot told police she fended
of a would-be thief in the Wal-Mart
parking lot in Hermiston. She said she

Kathryn Ann Fowler, 61,
of Forest Grove, Oregon,
passed away at her home
on Thursday, Oct. 6. She
was born July 5, 1955, in
La Grande, Oregon,
to parents Matt and
Doris Doherty.
She
attended
school in Hermiston,
Oregon, graduating
with honors in 1973.
In addition to being
a National Merit Fowler
Scholar, she was a
varsity tennis player and
band/pep band member.
Following high school
she attended the Univer-
sity of Oregon, where she
was an enthusiastic mem-
ber of both the marching
and pep bands. She grad-
uated with a degree in
music education and for a
brief time taught music at
Stanield and Hermiston.
She returned to school,
taking technical classes at
Blue Mountain Communi-
ty College. On completion
of her studies, she became
employed by Intel Corpo-
ration where she spent the
next 31 and a half years,
until retirement.
Kathy loved the out-
doors. She was very ac-
tive in 4-H when she was
young, and often
had her pet steer at
the fair. Kathy was
a very avid Ore-
gon Duck fan. She
loved her dogs and
her horse, and with
her husband, Dave,
enjoyed
entering
their dogs in various
hunting dog ield trials.
She is survived by
her husband Dave Fowl-
er, parents Matt and Do-
ris Doherty, sister Susan
Russell, and brother Steve
Doherty.
A rosary will be held
at The Visitation Catholic
Church in Verboort, Ore-
gon, on Saturday, Oct. 15
at 10:00 a.m., followed by a

Jane Starner (née Irwin)
passed away Monday, Oc-
tober 10 at her home in
Umatilla after a prolonged
ight with cancer. She was
born in Portland, Or-
egon, on October 16,
1951.
Jane grew up in
Stevenson, Wash-
ington, and Mil-
ton-Freewater, Ore-
gon, and graduated
from Eastern Ore- Starner
gon University with
a degree in education. After
taking several teaching jobs
throughout Eastern Oregon
and Idaho, she settled in
Umatilla in 1985 and mar-
ried her husband, George,
in 1993 in Coeur d’Alene,
Idaho.
Those who loved Jane
knew her to have a quick
wit and warm smile.
She was fast to laugh
and generous with her
time and love, qualities
which served her well in
her teaching career. She
taught at Clara Brownell
Middle School until retire-
ment. Jane was an active
community leader and was

iston, who said she knew who bit the

Shepherd Medical Center. She didn’t
want police to come to her house, but
she was willing to talk on the phone.
12:28 a.m. - The owner of the
Chuckwagon Cafe, 81027 N. Highway
395, Hermiston, called the Umatilla
County Sherif’s Oice to report
hearing at least three gunshots just
north of the restaurant. Deputies were
unable to ind a shooter.
1:52 p.m. - A tool box was report-
ed stolen from the back of a pickup on
McConnell Lane, Hermiston.
3:03 p.m. - Hermiston police
received a report of shots ired behind
the Oak Tree Inn, 1110 S.E. Fourth St.,
