ROUNDUP:
continued from Page A6
ARLINGTON
37,
IONE 8 — At Ione, the
Arlington Honkers kept
their hot start to the season
going with a win over Ione
to stay unbeaten on Friday
night.
Ione (0-5, 0-3 SD4)
coach Todd Knop said that
turnovers played a big part
in his team’s lack of suc-
cess in scoring the football
on Friday.
“We moved the ball
really well, got in the red
zone a few times, but we
fumbled three times, lost
all three, and had an inter-
ception going into the end
zone,” he said.
Knop said one fumble
in particular was a back-
breaker for the team, as
it came with Ione trailing
just 6-0 early in the irst
quarter. Ione had a perfect
pass play to a wide-open
receiver, but the receiver
fumbled the ball imme-
diately after catching it,
which swung the momen-
tum back into Arlington’s
favor.
“Honestly, I think this
game may have played a
little differently if we don’t
fumble there and get a
score instead,” Knop said,
“We just made too many
mistakes.”
Arlington plays at Du-
fur Friday and Ione will
travel to Perrydale for 7

IRRIGON 4, UMATILLA 4 — The the Irrigon
Knights and Umatilla Vikings combined
G O O D
for six goals in the second half to finish
in a 4-4 tie in a thrilling Special District 4
game on Saturday.
“It was the most exciting game
we’ve had this year,” Irrigon coach Paul
Keefer said after the game. “It was a
great game between two rivals … we
would’ve liked to have a win but we’ll
take the tie.”
Umatilla (4-3-2, 1-1-1 SD4) got the
scoring going just seven minutes into
the game when Luis Castro centered the
ball towards the goal from the left side,
and his pass connected with the head of
Ben Binene and redirected into the back
of the net for the 1-0 lead.
That score stood until the 36th minute
when Irrigon’s Oscar Armenta sent a
corner kick toward the net where Ruben
Barrera stepped up and sent in a header
into the goal for the Knights to tie the
game at 1-1 and send it to halftime.
Out of the halftime break is where
things got real interesting.
In the 45th minute Irrigon’s Pedro
Maciel was handed his second yellow
card of the game, earning a red card and
ejection. That meant that Irrigon would
have to play the final 35 minutes of the
game 10 on 11.
But the Knights did not back down,
and instead grabbed ahold of the mo-
mentum and ran with it.
In the 52nd minute, Kenny Blurton
blasted one into the net with an assist
from Barrera to give Irrigon a 2-1 lead,
and then just 10 minutes later Irrigon
had a throw in deep in Umatilla’s zone
by Marcos Mejia and after a few passes
toward the net the ball found the back of
the net for a 3-1 Knights lead.
But Umatilla was not done either.
S H E P H E R D
The Vikings worked its offense quickly
after the third Irrigon goal and turned in
three goals in a span of four minutes,
two from Ernesto Mejia and one from
Elian Armenta to erase the deficit and
give Umatilla a 4-3 lead with 10 minutes
to play.
However, Barrera was in the right spot
at the right time for Irrigon as he scored
the tying goal at the 72nd minute on a
rebound shot that got away from Umatil-
la’s goalkeeper to make the score 4-4.
Keefer said he was proud of his team
to earn the tie, especially after playing
at a disadvantage for nearly the entire
second half.
“The kids did really well and stepped
up when they needed to the most,”
he said. “Umatilla put the press on us
and didn’t back down at all … I’m really
proud of these guys.”
