A6 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM COMMENTARY LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Rowan deserves another term as sherif I believe that Terry Rowan, our county sher- iff, deserves another four years as our Umatilla County Sheriff. I have known Terry for many years and I know he does a good job as sheriff. He works very hard for the people of our county. He works with the public; not only does he return calls from the public, he visits them. He does not sit behind a desk and run the sheriff’s department. He works the streets alongside his deputies. He believes in law and order. He is a straight shooter. I have known him to be a man of his word. He was never demoted, nor has he has been in any scandal. He works with all the po- lice departments in each of the cities in Umatilla County. He works hard with the commissioners to hold down costs of his department and ensure the safety of us, the citi- zens of Umatilla County. COURTS: He has done a fine job as sheriff. That’s why I am ask- ing you to retain this fine God-fearing young fam- ily man. Our county and our country need more people like Terry Rowan, our county sheriff. JACK MCWHINNIE UMATILLA There are four parties, not just two We really do need to broaden the national de- bates to include all four major parties: Democrats, Republicans, Progres- sives and Libertarians. Especially in this elec- tion cycle when we are presented two of the least liked candidates accord- ing to polls. Obviously nobody is going to like all their ideas equally and that is not the point. The elec- tions commission should allow Americans to choose which are the best ideas for governing our nation, but we will not Worship know which are best if we never hear from all viable candidates. Neither the Republican nor the Democrat candi- dates want Americans to hear what Progressives like Jill Stein or Liber- tarians like Gary Johnson have to say, and that alone is reason enough to in- clude them in the national debates. The present, two-party system has resulted in a plutocracy that only fresh approaches can fix. It is imperative that we hear alternatives to the Neo- cons and Neoliberal faux progressives. Please push to include all four viable candidates in the national debates: Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Jill Stein and the Libertarian Gary Johnson.
