COMMUNITY
THEATER TO STAGE ‘THE JUNGLE BOOK’
By TAMMY MALGESINI
Community Editor
Director Jenny Walker is excited to
bring “The Jungle Book” to Hermis-
ton’s Children’s Community Theater.
“It’s always been one of my favor-
ite stories,” the Hermiston woman said.
“And, with the movie that just came out,
I believe a lot of the younger kids will
be more excited about performing.”
Presented through Hermiston Parks
& Recreation, the acting class provides
an opportunity for youths from 8-18 to
learn about stage presence, voice con-
trol and acting techniques. In addition,
participants will gain conidence and
new friends. The group will rehearse
for two months and then stage a pair of
performances.
The rehearsals begin Tuesday, Sept.
20, from 5:15-7:15 p.m. at the Herm-
iston Conference Center, 415 S. High-
way 395. The cost is $50 for Hermiston
residents and $63 for non-residents.
The rehearsals run Tuesday and
Wednesdays through mid-November.
The performances are Thursday, Nov.
17, and Friday, Nov. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at
Armand Larive Middle School, 1497
S.W. Ninth St., Hermiston.
“We are looking for inexperienced
and experienced actors in our area,
said Gina Wicks of Hermiston Parks
& Recreation. “We have many roles to
ill in this play, so the more actors the
better.”

past Children’s Community Theater
production. The Hermiston Parks
& Recreation youth drama program
is now taking registrations for “The
Jungle Book.”
Walker got involved with the com-
munity theater program when she was
signing up her now 10-year-old daugh-
ter, Elizabeth, for “Beauty & the Beast”
in January 2015. Expressing an inter-
est in helping, Walker was snatched up
by then-director Vickie Foster.

“I have a performing background ...
so I offered to help with the singers,”
Walker recalled. “The director said,
‘Here, you’re now the musical direc-
tor.’”
Since Foster’s retirement from the
community theater program, Walker
has stepped into the role of director.
She said it’s important to provide an
opportunity for kids to get involved in
the performing arts, especially when
those programs sometimes take a hit
due to school funding concerns.
“Giving kids a creative outlet even
as young as third grade is extremely
helpful,” Walker said.
In addition, Walker said the com-
munity rallies behind area kids and
presents opportunities for them. Finan-
cial support is provided by Desert Arts
Council, which assists in paying for
scripts and licensing fees.
Walker said everyone helps with
coming up with their own costumes.
Also, those who express interested in
other aspects of theater — including
props, sound effects and other back-
stage production — are provided di-
rection and a chance to participate in
those activities.
The registration fee is due by Fri-
day. For more information, visit www.

call 541-667-5018 or stop by the rec-
reation ofice, 180 N.E. Second St.,
Hermiston.
