Wallowa Co. duo to
perform in Heppner
A concert featuring
blues, roots, folk and
Americana is featured
during the upcoming Mu-
sic in the Park in Heppner.
A Wallowa County duo
of songwriters Carolyn
Lochert and Janis Carp-
er, blend their talents to
form a unique sound as
Jezebel’s Mother. Swirl-
ing with rhythms and
harmonies, sentiment and
smiles, tight but sponta-
neous, each performance
is a musical adventure
that reveals the bond of
best friends. Whether
they’re belting out blues
on a big concert stage or
crooning in the corner of
a cozy coffeehouse, the
two seasoned musicians
entertain with soul and
style.
Jezebel’s Mother will
perform as part of Hep-

series Sunday, Aug. 14,

Guardian Angel Homes resident turns 100
HERMISTON HERALD
Guardian Angel Homes
recently celebrated the
100th birthday of one of
its residents.
Eunice Powell was
born Aug. 6, 1916, to
James and Ella Alber-
ton Holloway on a cattle
ranch east of Jordan Val-
ley in the small town of
Jordan Creek, Idaho. She
had two sisters and two
brothers.
When Eunice was 3
years old, she decided
to be her own beautician
and cut her own hair. Her
10-year-old brother told
her that she looked like
a “Pete.” That resulted in
her nickname, which she
went by for many years
with her classmates and
siblings.
Her family moved to
the Snake River Valley
and then, to Wilder, Ida-
ho, before moving to Or-
egon where Eunice grad-
uated from Drain High
School in 1933. Eunice
married her husband
Vernis (Mike) in 1934.
The Powells soon start-
ed their family and had
two children, Robert and
Bonita. During that time,
Eunice lived what she
called a “Loggers Life.”
She worked with her hus-
band’s logging company
until 1949.
Mike
and
Eunice
bought a farm near
Homedale, Idaho, which
became their home for 25
years. During that time,
and 15 years after Boni-
ta was born, they were
blessed with Marilyn.
Eunice stayed very
busy being a homemaker
and a mother of three chil-
dren. When Mike retired
in 1975 they moved to

Caldwell, Idaho, then to
Cottage Grove for about
eight years to be close
to family. In 1995, they
moved to Hermiston to be
near their son, Robert. At
the time of Mike’s death,
the couple had been mar-
ried for 65 years.
Eunice said through
all of her travels she has
never met a person who
has been undesirable. She
said everyone she met has
been kind and good.
When Eunice irst
moved to Guardian Angel
Homes, she was the resi-
dent gardener for sever-
al years. She won a irst,
second and two third place
ribbons on snippings en-
tered in the Umatilla
County Fair. If you ever
have any questions about
lowers, Eunice is the per-
son you need to ask.
Staff at Guardian An-
gel Homes enjoy having
Eunice’s smiling face and
friendly
conversations
and wish her a very warm
and well deserved happy
100th birthday.
