Robert Howard Jepsen,
86, of Heppner, Ore.,
passed away on Tuesday,
July 19, 2016, at Kadlec
Hospital in Richland,
Wash. A Celebra-
tion of a Life Well
Lived was held on
Saturday, July 22, at
11 a.m. at All Saints
Episcopal Church in
Heppner. Following
the service, lunch
was provided at the Jepsen
church.
Robert, or Bob as he
was known by most peo-
ple, was born in Heppner,
Oregon, on July 26, 1929.
His parents were Wal-
ter and Matilda (Burns)
Jepsen. Bob was the third
of nine siblings. He grew
up on a Rhea Creek farm
where his father raised lay-
ing hens.
He attended Ione School
for all 12 years and grad-
uated in 1948. After high
school graduation, he at-
tended Paciic University
on a football scholarship
and studied business. He
then transferred to Eastern
Oregon College where he
also played football.
During college he met
his wife-to-be, Suzanne
Lieuallen of Pendleton,
while skiing at Spout
Springs. Bob was on the
ski patrol and rescued Su-
zanne after she had fallen
and broken her arm. They
were married on June 24,
1951. Soon after their
marriage, Bob took over
farming the Dobyns ranch,
where he had worked
part-time since the eighth
grade. While on the wheat
farm, the couple had two
children. Susan was born
in 1952, and Bill came
along in 1955. Susan went
on to become a registered
nurse and Bill a veterinar-
ian. Bob and Suzanne con-
tinued to farm until 1991,
when Bob retired and they
moved to Heppner. Bob
loved agriculture and con-
tinued to help his son Bill
on the farm until his death.
This would have been his
73rd harvest.
Church and community
involvement were very im-
portant to Bob. He was a
man of strong faith, believ-
ing in salvation through Je-
sus Christ and the promise
of resurrection and eter-
nal life in heaven. He was
an active member of All
Saints Episcopal Church
and participated in their
Cursillo program. In earli-
er years he was a Sunday
school teacher at the Ione
Church. He also spent
many years working with a
prison ministry in Pendle-
ton and was involved with
Full Gospel Businessmen’s
Association in Hermiston.
Bob served in numerous
other organizations includ-
ing time as president of
the Oregon Wheat Grow-
ers League, president of
the Willow Creek Country
Club, and chairman of the
Oregon State Farm Service
Agency committee. Bob
was a member of the muse-
um board, the county road
committee and many local
and state committees. Soon
after retiring from farming
and moving to Hep-
pner, he was elected
mayor. He served in
that position for 12
years, from 1993-
2004.
Over the years
Bob has been rec-
ognized with many
awards and honors,
including
Conservation
Man of the Year in 1970,
Oregon State Father of
the Year in 1972 and, with
Suzanne, Heppner Man
and Woman of the year in
2002.
Bob enjoyed spending
time outdoors. He was
an avid snow skier and a
member of the Mazamas
Mountain Climbing Club
for over 15 years. He also
helped teach survival
skills at Tupper Outdoor
School to local sixth grad-
ers. Golf was another of
Bob’s favorite pastimes,
right up to the time of his
recent illness. He espe-
cially loved spending time
with his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. They
will miss his love and his
sense of humor.
Those left to cherish
his memories are his wife
of 65 years, Suzanne;
daughter Susan Bulling-
ton of Umatilla; son Bill
(Nancy) of Heppner; four
sisters, Elsie Baca of
Maryland, Betty Mault
of Coos Bay, Anna Lar-
son of Portland and Evie
(Mike) Elder of Eugene;
two brothers, John (Jean)
of Ione and Frank (Lin-
da) of Milton-Freewater;
six grandchildren: Brad
Bullington,
Matthew,
Daniel, Eric and Re-
becca. Jepsen, and Amy
Jepsen Schaffeld; and
nine great-grandchildren:
Blake and Brody Bulling-
ton, Natalie, Seth, Cody,
Abi, Laurelee and Anna
Jepsen, and Whitney
Schaffeld; and numerous
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in
death by his parents and
two
sisters,
Virginia
Wood and Mary Holtz.
Memorial contributions
may be made to the Wil-
low Creek Terrace Assist-
ed Living Facility, 400
Frank Gilliam Drive, Hep-
pner, OR 97836. Money
will go speciically toward
to building a paved and
landscaped walking path
for residents there.
By the grace of God,
Bob lived a long life, and
he was full of life while
with us. He worked and
gave of his time tireless-
ly. He was loved and re-
spected by many and he
paved the way for a great
number of descendants to
be brought up in the fear
of the Lord and with a de-
light to live with both in-
tensity and trust. He will
be often missed in the
coming years.
Marvin L.
Clarkson, 89,
of Newberg
died Satur-
day, July 23,
2016.
Marvin
was
born
Dec. 13, 1926, in Booker,
Texas, to Eula and Edwin
Clarkson. Marvin would be
the oldest of ive children.
The family lived in Book-
er until Marvin was age
9. Hard times and the dust
bowl blew them to south-
ern Idaho. During Marvin’s
youth he discovered a love
for growing animals and
crops.
As Marvin became a
young man he was draft-
ed into the U.S. Army. He
served in Berlin during the
occupation at the end of the
war.
On Dec. 31, 1948,
Marvin married the sweet
young Louise Hockett at
Greenleaf, Idaho. They
began their life together
working on farms in the
Greenleaf and Melba areas
of Idaho. They were soon
joined by a son, Danny,
and a daughter, Barbara. In
1957 Marvin began work-
ing his own dairy in Notus,
Idaho. In 1964 a third child,
Chuck, joined the family.
In 1966 the dairy was
sold and Marvin worked
at various farms. In 1973
Marvin became the irriga-
tion manager at Eastern Or-
egon Farms in Irrigon, Ore.
After 17 years he moved on
to George Fox University
and joined their physical
plant staff until his retire-
ment at age 82.
On February 8,
2011, his be-
loved Louise
passed away
in order to
get the gar-
den ready for
Dad to see it.
Marvin’s passion was
watching life grow. Some-
times it was plants. Other
times it was animals, but
the greatest joy was seeing
spiritual growth in the lives
of people. Marvin always
had an inluence on those
around him through en-
couragement, wisdom and
mentoring. Many students
at George Fox learned to
love Marvin and kept in
touch with him. Later in
life Marvin and Louise re-
ceived a lot of joy through
their involvement with the
Foster Friends program that
supported the GFU girls’
basketball team. He contin-
ued to meet with two of his
Foster Friends each week
right up until his death.
Survivors include son
Danny Clarkson, his wife
Debi and children Bart,
Katie and Lori; daughter
Barbara Hatield, her hus-
band Ernie and children
Jay and Robert; son Chuck
Clarkson and children Joel,
Amanda, and Caleb; broth-
er Marion Clarkson; and
sister Letha Dillon.
He was preceded in
death by his parents, Ed-
win and Eula Clarkson, and
brothers Howard Clarkson
and Everett Clarkson.
Funeral services will be
held Friday, July 29, at 10
a.m. at Attrell’s Funeral
Chapel in Newberg.
