Jerry Cooper of Stan-
ield, Oregon, passed away
on Sunday, July 17, 2016,
at the age of 79 at Kadlec
Regional Medical Center in
Richland, Wash.
He was born in
Denver, Colorado,
on May 23, 1937.
Parents were Joe
and Maggie Chris-
topher Cooper. He
attended Stanield
schools,
graduat- Cooper
ing from Stanield
High School in 1955. Af-
ter high school Jerry began
his farming career with
his father, Joe Cooper. He
raised many different crops
throughout his 60-plus
years of farming including
mint, hay, wheat, melons,
ield corn, sweet corn, and
a variety of produce.

married

Bateman of Umatilla on
June 22, 1963. They raised
four children in the home
they shared for 53 years.
In his early years he was a
basketball referee through-
out Eastern Oregon. Jerry
served on the board of di-
rectors of both the Stanield
Rural Fire District and the
Stanield Irrigation District
for many years. He was af-
fectionately known as May-
or of Loop Road.
An avid isherman he

and took trips to ish the
coastal waters of Vancou-
ver Island, British Colum-
bia. He enjoyed sharing his
experiences of traveling to
England in 1981 and Russia
in 1987.
Jerry was preceded in
death by his parents, Joe
and Maggie Cooper. He is
survived by his wife
Pam; four children,
Teresa Cooper Wal-
chli, Randy Cooper
(Brenda), Neil Coo-
per and Cheri Coo-
per Hanson; sister
Vicki Saylor; and
ive grandchildren,
Kenzie Cooper, Jack
Cooper, Dru Walchli, Cait-
lin Hanson and Kendall
Cooper.
Jerry will be missed by
his family, extended family
and many friends.
A Celebration of Life
service will be held
on Thursday, July 21,
2016, at 2:00 p.m. at
Burns Mortuary chapel
in Hermiston. Burial at
the Hermiston Cemetery
will follow the service.
A “gathering” will take
place at the family home
at 77591 Cooper Road,
Stanfield, following the
burial.

SUNDAY, JULY 17
2:08 a.m. - The Morrow County
Sheriff’s Office received a call from
a resident of Mountain View Drive,
Boardman, reporting his girlfriend
had broken his hand. The caller
said he would drive himself to the
hospital.
11:06 p.m. - A resident of Pond
Drive, Heppner, called the Morrow
County Sheriff’s Office to complain
about the smell from a dead deer
on the neighbor’s property.
2:05 p.m. - Residents of River
Ridge Drive, Boardman, complained
to the Morrow County Sheriff’s Of-
fice about a young man going door
to door in the neighborhood asking
for odd jobs. A Boardman police
officer talked to the man and was
told he was trying to gather funds
to help pay for his grandmother’s
funeral, which was in a couple of
days.
6:27 p.m. - A dump truck blew
a tire on Interstate 84 eastbound
near Boardman. Debris in the
road caused another car to wreck.
Boardman fire and ambulance
crews, Oregon State Police and
the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office
responded to the scene.
SATURDAY, JULY 16
9:03 a.m. - An employee of
Mikami Brothers Potatoes, 2601 S.
First St., Hermiston, reported the
theft of tires from the business the
previous night. The caller had video
of the suspect’s vehicle and asked
for contact from a Umatilla County
sheriff’s deputy.
8:02 p.m. - A boy was almost hit
by a car while he was mowing the
yard at his home on North Dunne
Street, the boy’s mother reported
to Stanfield police. The car left the
area and headed toward Pilot Travel
Center, 2115 S. Highway 395.
FRIDAY, JULY 15
1:39 p.m. - A white full-size van
with eight occupants got stuck on
the railroad tracks at South Ken-
nedy Street and Ramos Lane, Echo.
Union Pacific Rail Road reported
they had stopped the train until the
vehicle was cleared from the tracks.
4:38 a.m. - A resident of Vista
Trailer Park, 1800 N.E. 10th St.,
Hermiston, reported his car stolen.
The caller said the vehicle was
unlocked with the keys in it, and it
had a half tank of gas. The Umatilla
County Sheriff’s Office took a theft
report.
8:12 p.m. - A Umatilla police of-
ficer was called to Crossroads Truck
Stop, 2020 Highway 730, Umatilla,
by an employee of the restaurant
who said a woman eating with her
family was biting and pinching the
children. The caller also said she
believed the parents were under
the influence of something.
THURSDAY, JULY 14
8:11 a.m. - A resident of Hat Rock
Road, Hermiston, reported a wom-

was taking a shower and took his
tablet computer and $40 cash. He
requested contact from a Umatilla
County sheriff’s deputy.
9:57 a.m. - A person driving
westbound on Interstate 84 near
Boardman reported a man lying on
the ground alongside the freeway
with a piece of cardboard over
his body. The caller requested a
welfare check. Oregon State Police
investigated.
10:03 a.m. - The Umatilla County
Sheriff’s Office were called when
a person reported a Walmart bag
in a ditch along the west side of
the bridge on East Loop and South
Edwards roads had some kind of
hair sticking out of it. The caller
wasn’t sure whether the hair was
animal or human.
10:24 a.m. - The manager of
Mountain Glen Apartments, 200 N.E.
Pioneer Drive, Heppner, reported
her office was broken into and
believes juveniles were the culprits.
The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office
took a report.
7:42 p.m. - A four-year-old
child wandering alone near the
Don Baxter Skate Park, 8 N. Main
Ave., Irrigon, was returned to his
home by a Morrow County sheriff’s
deputy.
7:50 p.m. - The Walla Walla
Sheriff’s Office requested contact
from the Umatilla County Sheriff’s
Office after two people involved in
a car accident near Stateline Road
and Highway 332 in Washington
reported fleeing from an assault in
Umatilla County.
8:59 p.m. - Prescription
medication was reported stolen
from a home on South Townsend
Road, Hermiston. The caller named
a possible suspect.

7:10 a.m. - The Boardman Fire
