Beep Baseball goes
to bat for vision center
Instead of asking if the umpire is blind,
the baseball players will be.
The Seattle South King Sluggers, a visu-
ally impaired and blind team, will take on
the Tri-Cities Dust Devils. An afiliate of
the San Diego Padres, the Class A team will
be blindfolded as they play Beep Baseball
against the visually impaired team.
A modiied game, an over-sized softball
beeps and the base posts buzz. Players will
have spotters to help direct where the ball
is. The purpose of the event is to educate
the community about adaptive sports for the
blind and visually impaired.
A fundraiser for the Edith Bishel Center,
the event is Saturday, July 2, at 6:15 p.m. at
GESA Stadium, Pasco. Tickets are $25 for
adults and $20 for kids. The ticket includes
the Beep Baseball game, dinner and upper
box seating for the regular Dust Devils game
against the Everett AquaSox that follows at
7:15 p.m.
Located at 628 N. Arthur St., Kennewick,
the Edith Bishel Center serves the blind and
visually impaired in southeastern Washing-
ton and northeastern Oregon. It offers train-
ing, education, products and resources for
the visually impaired community.

Bulldog lacrosse puts ive on all-conference
Christiansen chosen
for first-ever
All-Star game
By ERIC SINGER
Staff writer
Five Hermiston Bulldogs
made the cut on the High Desert
League’s all-conference rosters
following the 2016 season.
The Bulldogs placed junior
attacker Brady Christiansen
and junior midield Tuck-
er Salinas on the all-confer-
ence second team and senior
attacker Javier Garcia, and
sophomore defensemen Tayler
Arnold and Jake Palmer were
named as honorable mentions.
As a team, Hermiston went
6-10 overall playing as an in-
dependent this season.
Christansen, a third-year
varsity starter for the Bull-
dogs, was happy to see sev-
eral teammates join him with
all-conference recognition.
“It shows we’re moving
along and growing as a pro-
gram,” he said. “Now we need
to just take that next step.”
The postseason honors did
not stop there for Christiansen,

Hermiston’s Brady Christiansen draws contact from Lincoln’s Blake Phillips (18) in a game this season
in Hermiston. Christansen and teammate Tucker Salinas were selected for second team all-conference
honors this season. Christiansen also was selected to play in an all-star game earlier this month.
however, as he was chosen to
compete in the irst-ever OHS-
LA All-Star Game that was
played on June 4. The game
took place prior to the 2016
state championship game in
Beaverton, where Christian-
sen’s Blue Team earned a 9-8
victory over the White Team.
“It felt amazing to be part
of history,” Christiansen said.
“Playing on that ield was
great and it was an honor to get
to play with the best players in
the state of Oregon. We’re try-
ing to build up the sport here
and it was a cool experience.”
The Bulldog junior stuck
around following the game to
watch the state championship
game between Beaverton and Je-
suit, which Beaverton won with a
score of 9-8. He said aside from
the entertainment of the game, he
took some mental notes of some
things to help improve his game
and his team in 2017.
“Just the intensity level
was off-the-charts,” he said.
“I watched how the players
were moving, passing quick-
ly and always getting position
and staying aggressive. They
played as a team and not as in-
dividuals, which is something
we need to do more.”
Hermiston falls in district title game
By MATT ENTRUP
Staff Writer
On Monday the 10/11 year-old
Triangle all-stars (made up of par-
ticipants in communities between
Pendleton and Milton-Freewater)
narrowly defeated Hermiston, 21-
19, for the District 3 champion-
ship.
With both teams’ pitchers strug-
gling to ind the strike zone, Mon-
day’s championship featured just
two hits by each team and a com-
bined 34 walks and nine hit batters.
Rian Woodard had a double for
Hermiston, and Shayanne Martin
added a single.
