Knights cruise
past Trojans
Irrigon reaches first semifinals
with win over Kennedy
The last time the Irrigon Knights and Kennedy
Trojans met, it took a late rally for the Knights to
pull out the victory.
This time, not so much.
Austin Rice gave the Knights another stellar
outing on the mound and the offense backed him
with instant run production for a 12-3 win that was
never in doubt on Friday in the 2A/1A state quar-
terinals.
Rice, who did not pitch against Kennedy in
their irst meeting back in March, carried a no-hit-
ter through ive innings and struck out 12. He did
walk six though, leading to one unearned run al-
lowed.
Irrigon led 8-0 by the time the Trojans got on
the scoreboard in the ifth. The Knights answered
that lone run with four more to make it 12-1.
Lino Covarrubia led the offense going 2 for 4
with two doubles, two RBI and two runs.
Cougar Kroske went 2 for 2 with one run and
one RBI, and Rice, Zack Henrichs, Nate Verley (2
for 3) and Hayden White (2 for 3) all scored twice.
Verley added three stolen bases, and White
had two steals while also pitching the inal two
innings and giving up two runs on two hits.
No. 4 Irrigon, playing in its irst baseball post-
season, took to the road for the semiinals where it
faced No. 1 Burns on Tuesday. Results from that
game were not available as of press time Tuesday.

Tigers rout Eagles in quarterfinals
Big inning lifts Stanfield
over Catlin Gabel
The irst time through the lineup, the
Stanield Tigers had a little trouble ig-
uring out Catlin Gabel starting pitcher
Patrick Muskat in Friday’s 3A baseball
quarterinals.
The second time was a different story.
Stanield nearly batted around twice
during a deciding third inning and went
on to win, 17-1, in their inal game of
the season at Madigan Field.
Fifteen Tigers came to the plate
during the third inning. Seven of them
reached base on hits, two were walked
and three reached on errors. Twelve of
them touched home plate.
“We just blitzed them
like crazy and they didn’t
know what hit them,” said
Stanield coach Bryan
Johnson. “The kids exe-
cuted and just hit the ball
hard and before we knew
it, it was 12-0.”
Ryan Bailey led the
Tigers at the plate going
4 for 4 with three runs
scored and two RBIs.
Tony Flores, Brody Woods and Adrian
Renner also drove in a pair of runs, and
Woods scored three times.
Meanwhile, Dylan Grogan, Flores
and Bailey combined to give up just
three hits on the mound and kept the Ea-
gles off the scoreboard until the seventh
inning.

Grogan pitched the irst four innings

Flores threw the next two with three
strikeouts and one walk, and Bailey
pitched the seventh with one strikeout
and two walks.
The No. 3 Tigers went be on the road
in the semiinals at No. 2 Rainier. That
game was played on Tuesday but re-
sults were not available as of press time
