Bicycle camp rides into town
As part of the nonprofi t
iCan Shine, the organiza-
tion uses adapted equipment,
trained professionals and
volunteers. Participants are
physically assisted and en-
couraged by two volunteer
spotters.
The program touts more
than an 80 percent success
rate, resulting in participants
learning to ride a conven-
tional bicycle independently
by the end of camp. Parents,
teachers and therapists said
learning to ride a bicycle can
build confi dence.
“The gift of being able to
ride is the best experience
I’ve ever experienced in my
life. When I ride I feel free,
like I can do anything,” said
a 2015 iCan Bike participant.
Cindy Middleton helped
bring the program to Herm-
iston several years ago. Her
son, Rian, participated in a
similar program in Longview,
Washington.
Volunteers must be at least
16 years old. They must be
able to participate during the
same 90-minute time period
each day of the camp. In ad-
dition, volunteers are needed
to help pack and put equip-
ment away after the last day
of camp.
The activity includes some
light jogging and running.
Also, volunteers provide
physical, emotional and mo-
tivational support to their as-
signed rider.
This year’s camp is be-
ing hosted by the Hermiston
School District, Hermiston
Kiwanis and InterMountain
Education School District.
