Mervin
Lee
Lewis
passed away
in peace on
May 15th,
2016, at the
age of 79.
He was born
in Grants Pass, Oregon,
on August 11th, 1936. A
remarkable life.
After graduating from
Laurelwood Academy, he
served in the United States
Army as a corpsman, sta-
tioned both in Texas and
at Walter Reed Army Hos-
pital. He was honorably
discharged in 1958. He
then left D.C. and spent
the next 18 months on a
Harley, taking whatever
jobs he could. He saw the
country on the way home,
a job and a gas tank at a
time.
Once back in Grants
Pass, he met Dona De-
nise Hahn. They married
in November 1959. Dona
and Merv had three chil-
dren. Their young family
moved to Hermiston in
1964.
Merv, as everyone knew
him, loved to hunt, ish
and camp. In the 1970s he
spent several seasons as
a Little League baseball
coach. He fulilled one of
his dreams and used his
G.I. Bill to obtain
his private pi-
lot’s license.
Merv was a
cow
man,
having raised
registered
Angus cattle
for over 40 years. He al-
ways had a project in the
works.
He was a loving hus-
band, a fantastic father and
an especially proud grand-
pa. There were memorable
family vacations to Cana-
da, and all of the Western
states. There were a lot of
camping trips in between.
Merv is preceded in
death by his parents Dez-
zie and Joseph, and his
brother Charles. He is sur-
vived by brother Delbert.
He leaves behind Dona,
his wife of 56 years; his
son Rodney; daughters
Deanna Schalk and Tere-
sa Cameron; and his two
grandchildren, Kevin and
Nicole Schalk.
In respecting Merv’s
wishes, there will be no
memorial services. He
was always willing to help
a friend or neighbor, re-
gardless of time (or tim-
ing). In lieu of donations,
please honor Merv by pay-
ing it forward; and helping
out a friend or a neighbor.
