Irrigon baseball, softball teams play today
The Dufur Rangers are tired
of seeing Irrigon’s Austin Rice.
The senior left-hander threw
a six-inning no-hitter against the
Rangers with 14 strikeouts as
Irrigon defeated Dufur, 11-1 ,to
claim the 2A/1A Special District
6 championship on Saturday af-
ternoon. It was the third time that
Rice had faced the Rangers this
season, and his second no-hitter
against them as well.
In a combined 15.2 innings in
those three games against Dufur,
Rice has allowed just one hit, one
run and ive walks while striking
out 30 batters. Rice’s only run
allowed came in the third inning
when he loaded the bases with
two walks and a hit-by-pitch
before inducing a ground out to
second base to bring in a run. He
then struck out the next batter to
end the scoring threat.
The win boosts Irrigon (16-5,
10-2) back into the state tourna-
ment after missing out by one
spot in the district standings one
season ago. With the Knights
holding the No. 4 OSAA ranking,
they will host their irst-round
game today at 3 p.m. against
Lost River.
In Saturday’s game, Cougar
Kroske supplied plenty of of-
fense for Irrigon as he went 3-4
with one run scored and a pair
of RBIs. Adrian Roa and Zack
Henrichs each compiled two hits,
two runs, and two RBIs as well
to help lead the Knights.
Irrigon put the pressure on
Dufur right away in the bottom
of the irst inning, as Henrichs
ripped an RBI single to right ield
and Nate Verley smashed a two-
run double to help the Knights
to a 5-0 lead. They added three
more in the second inning on a
sacriice ly from Henrichs, an
RBI single to right by Hayden
White to take an 8-0 lead.
The game ended one inning
early when Kroske ripped an
RBI triple to left ield to score
Henrichs from irst, and then Roa
followed up with an RBI single
to right to bring in Kroske and
invoke the 10-run rule.

UNION 9, IRRIGON 3 — At
Pilot Rock, the Irrigon Knights
lost to the Union Bobcats in the
district playoffs on Saturday
morning.
Irrigon coach Jeff Botefuhr
said that the Knights had the
bases loaded three times in the
game, but couldn’t cash in each
time.
“We hit the ball well, we just
couldn’t put our hits together
when it counted,” he said. “We
just didn’t play our best game
and when you play a good team
like Union, they’ll make you
pay.”
Even with the loss, the
Knights were able to sneak into
the 2A/1A state tournament due
to their No. 13 OSAA ranking.
The will face No. 4 seeded North
Douglas today at 4 p.m.
