A4 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 2016 Our Community Car show revs up community support By TAMMY MALGESINI Community Editor It’s time to rev up your engines, as the Automobile Club of Echo High School is hosting its annual car show. Just over a decade ago, a handful of students showed off their vehicles lining the sidewalk at Echo High School. Now approaching its 11th year, the car show attracted 174 entries last year. “Every year it keeps getting bigger, “ said Rick Denning, who got involved with the event in 2011. “I hope we don’t run out of room.” The show moved from the school’s football fi eld to downtown Echo sever- al years ago. In addition to cars, trucks and motorcycles on display, the event has ex- panded to include fundrais- ers by the school’s football and volleyball teams. The A.C.E. Car Show is Saturday, May 28, from noon to 5 p.m. in down- town Echo. Vehicle regis- tration begins at 10 a.m. The vehicle entry fee is $20 or $5 for students. The football team will offer barbecued hamburg- ers and hot dogs. And, the volleyball team will have an Italian soda bar and a 50-50 raffl e. “Our support from the FILE PHOTO More than 150 cars lined the streets during a past Automobile Club of Echo Car Show. He continues to help as a way to give back to the community. A mechanic by trade, Denning said it’s im- portant to provide support to the students. “When kids are inter- ested in something, there needs to be an avenue to follow-through with their interests,” he said. Each year, members of the club talk about what they want to do with mon- ey raised. Over the years Denning said students have attended drag races, mon- ster truck races and the Portland Roadster Show. In addition, they have worked on student cars, as well as purchasing and working on a project car. Denning said one of the big draws among car show participants are the cus- tom-made trophies. MEDICAL Two-for-one specials not always the best deal DIRECTORY I ’m a bargain shopper. I mean, who doesn’t like two-for-one specials? In spite of how practical it may sound to have two sur- gical procedures done at the same time — think twice be- fore doing it. I fi gured since I was be- ing knocked out last month, I might as well get my hand and knee fi xed at the same time. When I told my friends about my upcoming surgery, they responded with dismay.
