Bettyjane Bruner was
born May 25, 1933, at De-
troit, Michigan, to parents
Edwin and Dolly (Zimmer)
Gilpin. She died Monday,
April 16, 2016, in
Hermiston, Oregon,
at the age of 82.
She was raised in
Camas, Washington,
and graduated from
high school in Wash-
ougal,
Washing-
ton. She moved to
Hermiston in 1950.
She worked at the Cross-
roads Truck Stop as a cook
and there she met the love
of her life, Vernon Bruner,
who was also a cook. They
soon married and Bettyjane
returned to school to be-
come an accountant.
They managed an apart-
ment complex in Walla
Walla, Washington, for
many years. They returned
to Hermiston and lived at
Sun Terrace Assisted Liv-
ing Facility. She enjoyed
attending church functions
for the Baptist church. She
was a quiet person who
liked spending time with
her friends. Bettyjane en-
joyed playing bingo, cro-
cheting, cross stitching and
knitting afghans, but she
dearly loved her family and
their gatherings, especially
during the holidays.
She is survived by her
children Richard (Gloria)
Ross of Hermiston,
Ore., Debra (Gary)
Maxey of Hermis-
ton, Ore., and Nona
Ross of Lebanon,
Ore.; 10 grand-
children; and nine
great-grandchil-
dren.
She was preced-
ed in death by her husband
Vernon; parents Edwin
and Dolly Gilpin; and
brother Keal Marson.
A Celebration of Life
service will be held on
Saturday, May 7, 2016,
at 3 p.m. at Living Faith
Church, 1611 Diagonal
Blvd., Hermiston, OR

Marcella C. Cate, 79,
of Edmonds, Wash., died
April 16, 2016. She was
born in Walla Walla, Wash.,
graduated from Foster High
School,
Seattle,
Wash., and attended
Washington
State
University.
Marcella was a
loving daughter and
a beloved sister and
aunt.
She was gener-
ous and artistically
talented. She loved peo-
ple, dogs, horses and ros-
es. Marcella was a gifted
seamstress, tailor and quil-
ter. As a light attendant for
many years with Northwest
Airlines, she also enjoyed
traveling. Later in life, she
joined the Peace Corps and
worked in Honduras with
the nutrition program. Af-
ter returning to the Unit-
ed States, she settled in
Eastern Oregon and taught
E.S.L. students at Hermis-
ton High School, receiving
an “Apple” award for ex-
cellence. Her twilight years
were spent near her family
in Edmonds, Wash.
Marcella was baptized
in 1977 at Hinson Memorial
Baptist Church, Port-
land, Oregon, and was
active in Bible Study
Fellowship
while
there. After locating in
Eastern Oregon, Mar-
cella became an active
member of the Stan-
ield Baptist Church,
Stanield, Oregon.
Marcella is survived
by one sister, Joan, and
brother-in-law Bob Jones;
three nieces, Gayle Mahon,
Karen Gion and Marilyn
Shefveland; and nephew
Clint Jones.
A graveside service will
be held May 20, 2016, at
2:00 p.m. at the Wallula
Cemetery, Wallula, Wash.
A reception will be held
at 3:30 p.m. at the Oxford
Suites, Hermiston, Oregon.

Edmonds, Wash., handled
arrangements.
Robert H. “Bob” Gilcher,
of Hermiston, Oregon, was
born on October 28, 1937,
in Longview, Washington,
to parents Fredrick and Ber-
tha Scrogin Gilcher.
He died on April
27, 2016, in Seattle,
Washington, at the
age of 78 years.
Bob was raised
and attended schools
in Longview, Wash-
ington, until the
10th grade when he
moved to Umatilla, Oregon.
He graduated from Umatil-
la High School in the class
of 1955. Bob was united in
marriage to Neva Ann No-
bles on April 6, 1956, in
Hermiston, Oregon.
He went to work for
Nalley’s Potato Chip and
they lived in Seattle and
Aberdeen, Washington, and
Hermiston, Oregon. They
moved to Yakima, Wash-
ington, and raised their
family. Bob owned Yaki-
ma Valley Cabinets, was
a partner in the Kentucky
Fried Chicken franchise,
worked for Noel Foods,
and spent the last 10 years
of his working career as
the owner of the Jack Pot
convenience store. He re-
tired in 1999 and moved to
Hermiston, Oregon, where
they have lived since.
Bob was an active
member of the Hermiston
Church of the Nazarene and
the Umatilla High School
Alumni. He enjoyed bowl-
ing, hunting, woodworking,
playing cards, traveling,
and was an avid reader. Bob
perfected his scroll saw
skills with his RBI Hawk
and gifted many family and
friends his unique art work.
He is survived by his
wife of 60 years, Neva Ann
Gilcher, Hermiston, Ore.;
daughters Sandra Gilcher
Kimmel and her
husband Gary, Port-
land, Ore., and Gail
Andreas, Tri-Cities,
Wash.; sons Dan
Gilcher and his wife
Carol and Steve
Gilcher and his wife
Sheila, all of Yaki-
ma, Wash.; sister
Gerry Hamar, Klamath
Falls, Ore.; sister-in-law
Earlene Gilcher, Hermis-
ton, Ore.; grandchildren
Jerod (Sarah), Karl, Keith
(Vanessa) and Daniel;
great-grandchildren Hailey,
Madelyn, Maisy, Ainsley,
Eden and Blythe, and one
on the way; and numerous
nieces, nephews and cous-
ins.
Bob was preceded in
death by his parents; ive
brothers: Dorsey, Jack, Nick,
Dan and Glen; and sisters
Miriam, Barbara and Pat.
A celebration of life
service will be held on

Betty Lou Norris, 91,
of Wellington, Fla., and
Hermiston, Ore., quietly
slipped into eternity on
April 14. She lived a no-
table life with her
husband,
Chuck,
former commander
of Umatilla Army
Depot and Oregon
state representative,
who passed away in
2009.
Their legacy re-
mains in four chil-
dren, four grandchildren,
and four great-grandchil-
dren.
The memorial service

lines over a fence and into a pond on
private property. That land owner
said they were rude when he talked to
them and asked for law enforcement
to call.
8:02 p.m. - A man wearing a
DirecTV shirt and claiming to be from
DirecTV knocked on a door to a home
on East Jennie Avenue. The man had
no badge or documentation and
was described as “strange” by the
resident. He left in a green van with
“Genesis” on the side, but cops were
unable to locate the man to determine
if he was connected with DirecTV.

stolen from a vehicle on East Main in

1:30 p.m. - An Echo woman called
police about a raccoon that appeared
to stumble as it crossed West Buckley
Street to her yard and climb in her
tree.
4:02 p.m. - A vehicle was “drift-

6:18 a.m. - A window was broken
out in a vehicle on East Beech Avenue
in Hermiston. The stereo was ripped
out but left behind.
8:10 a.m. - Umatilla police began
an investigation into a guest room
break-in at the Quality Inn, 705 Willa-
mette St., Umatilla, and theft of a TV.
9:34 a.m. - A Umatilla woman on
B Street reported that Sunday night
around 10:30 p.m. she caught a white
female near her husband’s car with
the door wide open. She said she did
not report at the time because she did
not know she could make the report
at night.
She added strange people started
showing up at her house Sunday
night after someone pushed a white
car there during the weekend. That
vehicle was still in front of her house,
she said.
11:35 a.m. - A vehicle drove
through the chain link fence in the
Garden Department at the Hermiston
Wal-Mart. One store worker was
struck and injured.
12:37 p.m. - A worker at the Port
Of Umatilla on Launch Lane and Rox-
bury Road, Umatilla, reported they
were unloading box cars when the
smell of ammonia became so strong
it was nauseating. The caller asked
police to check it out because he did
not think anyone at the port would do
anything about it.
12:59 p.m. - Two men parked
a red Nissan pickup at a house on

•Victor Romero Ruiz, 36, Hermis-
ton, pleaded guilty to two counts of
Assault IV-domestic violence; sen-

service, $190 ine and $2,250 ine-sus-
pended for each count, plus court costs
and fees; pleaded guilty to Possession
of Forged Instrument II; sentenced to
180 days jail-suspended, 3 years pro-
bation, 80 hours community service,

la, pleaded guilty to Criminal Mischief
III; sentenced to 15 days jail-suspend-

•Harley Wayne Bowe, 26, Chi-
nook, Wash., was convicted of Felon
in Possession of Restricted Weapon;
sentenced to $375 ine plus court as-
sessment.
•Jorge Oblea Rodriguez, 21, Herm-
iston, pleaded guilty to Driving While
Suspended; sentenced to 180 days
jail-suspended, 2 years probation, 40
hours community service, $440 ine
and $1,250 ine-suspended, plus court
costs and fees.

Billing passed away quietly
on Saturday, April 30, 2016,
at the age of 93.
A lifelong resident of
Echo, Oregon, she
was born to Portu-
guese
immigrants
John and Estufania
Correa on August 7,
1922, at their ranch
next to the Umatilla
River south of Echo.
She was very proud
of her Portuguese
heritage and passed that pride
on to her children and grand-
children. Estie went through
all 12 grades at the public
school in Echo, where she
was an accomplished tennis
player. Through her adult life
she enjoyed gardening, fol-
lowing the Echo sports teams
and watching all the political
debates on TV. She swore
this new breed of politicians
would be the ruin of the coun-
try. She was on the Election
Board, active with the Altar
Society at St. Peter’s Church,
the Echo Museum and Senior
Citizens in Stanield.
Estie married Curtis Bill-
ing on July 1, 1945, at St.
Peter’s Church in Echo. Curt
and Estie raised four children,
Sharon Kirklin (Max), Scott
Billing (Darlene), Sylvia
Billing and Brenda Wright
(Dwaine). She is survived
by her four children, sister
