Vikings split with TigerScots, Grizzlies
The Umatilla tennis split their
two matches on Thursday, beating
Helix and losing to Weston-McE-
wen
Behind a strong performance
from boys No. 2 Junior Coria Coria,
Umatilla swept the boys and girls
meeting with Helix, going a com-
bined 9-3. However, the TigerScots
had similar success against the Vi-
kings, going 9-2.
Coria Coria eased through both
his matches Thursday, beating Ti-
gerScot Kellen Farichild 6-2 and
Grizzly Allan Holden 8-3. Gage
Bourie and Leonel Corona each
came out with default wins against
Helix, and top Umatilla boys dou-
bles team Joel Escamillo and Edgar
Madrigal won by default, as well.
Douglas Gomez took Umatilla’s
only boys loss against Helix, drop-
ping an 8-4 decision to Erik Jones.
Against Weston-McEwen, Go-
mez was swept by Caleb Olson 6-0,
Escamilla and Madrigal lost to Da-
vid Frose and Michael Shafer 6-2,
and Bourie and Corona, playing
as Umatilla’s No. 2 doubles team,
lost to Robbie Davidson and Ryan
Schmitgall 7-6 (5) in a close tie-
breaker. Coria Coria had Umatilla’s
only boys win against the Tiger-
Scots.
On the girls side, without top
singles player Sidney Webb, the Vi-
kings were pushed around. Brenda
Medoza, Umatilla’s No. 1 singles
on Thursday, was bested by Lynne
Roberts of Helix 6-3, and Mecalla
Espey of Helix beat Mey Lopez
6-2. Fatima Sanchez picked up
a default win as the No. 3 singles
player.
Helix did not have any girls
teams, so Umatilla picked up four
default wins.
Against Weston-McEwen, Jen-
ny Vazquez got a default win as
Umatilla’s No. 4 singles, but that
was the only victory had by the Vi-
kings. Johanna Albert beat Mey Lo-
pez 6-2 in the top match, Emmaline
Irvine beat Aly Munoz 7-5 at No. 2
and Hannah McIntyre beat Daisy
Garcilazo 6-5 at No. 3.
Weston swept the doubles
matches. Amanda Kidd and Becky
Taylor beat Yessenia Garcia and
Famtima Sanchez 7-5, Christina
Swafford and Mary Bagdon beat
Esperanza Garcia and Cinthia Lo-
pez 8-1, and Sammi Ford and Krys-
ta Calvert topped Chyanne Hinsley
and Diana Gutierrez 6-0.
Umatilla hosts Riverside in two
weeks at 4 p.m. Weston-McEwen is
at Helix the same day at the same
time.
Tigers split with Condon
The Stan¿eld tennis team went
3-3 against the Condon Knights on
Friday in Condon.
In the only contested girls dou-
bles match, Candida Rojas and Bri-
ana Cornejo swept Lacy Aamodt
and Margeret Campbell 6-4, 6-0 in
the No 3 match. Condon defaulted
at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4.
Condon took both girls singles
matches with Paige Ackerman beat-
ing Yakima Guzman 4-6, 7-5 (7-4),
needing a tiebreaker. Condon’s Pre-
ma Nissinen had less trouble with
BULLDOGS:
continued from Page A10
Stefani singled in Miller, then Ko-
pacz hit a three-run shot, putting
the Bulldogs in full control up 8-2.
Hermiston got its ninth in the
¿fth when Naylor singled and
scored on a Jamie Hinkley single.
In the nightcap, it was decid-
edly more even, but Hermiston
still was able to capitalize on
Falcon mistakes. Three errors at
third base alone cost Liberty, and
Hermiston used those mistakes to
score runs.
Jamie Hinkley led off the bot-
tom of the ¿rst with a single,
moved to second on a sacri¿ce
bunt from Englebrecht, moved to
third when Almaguer reached on
the ¿rst error by the Liberty third
baseman, then scored when Ko-
pacz doubled. Almaguer scored
on the play, as well, giving Herm-
iston an early 2-0 lead.
Liberty, though, didn’t go
away this time. The Falcons got
one in the second, when Angelica
Colbert singled and scored on a
passed ball. Liberty got three more
off nightcap starter Naylor, one of
which was helped by a Hermiston
error. Naylor also walked three
batters in the frame as her control
waned. Liberty led 5-4 after head-
ing to the home half.
There, Naylor made up. With
the bases loaded and one out,
Naylor ripped a line drive into
right center, easily plating Jamie
Hinkley from third and Kopacz
from second. Barton scored when
the center ¿elder misplayed the
Natalie Cornejo, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Stan¿eld won be default in both
boys singles matches.
Stan¿eld is off until March 29,
when the Tigers host Helix at 4:30
p.m.

Vikings fall to Mustangs
HEPPNER 14, UMATILLA
1 — At Heppner, the Mustangs
needed only ¿ve innings to grab
their ¿rst win of the season, beat-
ing down the Umatilla Vikings on
Thursday afternoon.
Pitchers Meranda Lemmon and
Dakota Durphy combined for al-
low just one hit and two walks on
the mound for the Mustangs (1-0),
while Cassidy McCullough picked
up two hits to lead the offense.
“The girls played pretty well for
the ¿rst time out this year,´ Hep-
pner coach Petra Payne said. “The
game showed us some little things
and situations we have to work on,
but it was nice to get the win.´
The Mustangs wasted no time
to ¿nd their groove on offense,
dropping 10 runs in the ¿rst inning
alone, and scoring all 14 of their
runs in the ¿rst three innings. The
Mustangs gathered 10 hits in the
contest.
Umatilla (0-1) next plays at
home against Walla Walla Acade-
my on Mar. 29, while Heppner will
host the Hermiston JV on Mar. 23.

HERMISTON 13, ROOS-
EVELT 0 — After needing just six
runs to beat Central Catholic in a
double header on Friday, the Herm-
iston Bulldogs baseball team’s
offense broke out in a big way on
Saturday against Roosevelt.
The Bulldogs scored 13 runs,
highlighted by a six-run second in-
ning, and hammered the Roosevelt
Roughriders 13-0 in ¿ve innings
behind a dominant pitching perfor-
mance from RJ Robles and wonder-
ful days at the plate from Robles,
Hayden Edmiston and Chase Root.
“This is a team we needed to
get healthy on,´ Hermiston coach
Lance Hawkins said. “We did what
we were supposed to do.´
Saturday’s game was a dou-
bleheader on Hermiston’s sched-
ule, but just a single game on the
Roughriders’, so they only played
one, and Hermiston dominated it.
The Bulldogs peppered 15 hits, in-
cluding three doubles, while Roo-
sevelt managed just one. Hermis-
ton (3-0) committed just one error,
while Roosevelt (0-2) committed
six.
Robles, a senior lefty with good
stuff, tossed four innings, allowing
just the one hit while striking out 10
and walking three. Caden Schwirse
came in for the ¿fth and had a clean
inning.
Robles was consistently throw-
ing strikes and working down in the
zone, two aspects of his game that
ball.
“It got me up there more, even
though I wasn’t doing very well
pitching,´ Naylor said. “The con-
¿dence from my hitting when that
happened made me feel better
and made me mood go straight up
from what it was after pitching.´
The game was called after the
¿fth due to darkness.
In addition to capitalizing on
mistakes, Hermiston continues to
mention its collective attitude and
family-like atmosphere, some-
thing which was missing in previ-
ous editions. Greenough said her
players are ¿nally starting to trust
one another. Naylor said the new
togetherness just makes every-
thing better.
“It felt like we played more as
a team than we had in the past,´
Naylor said. “To be able to play
more as a team and feel like a fam-
ily, it feels a lot more amazing.´
Hermiston is off until March
21, when it participates in the Put-
nam Spring Break Bash. Oppo-
nents and game times are yet to be
determined.
“We’re walking into that think-
ing we can beat anybody,´ Gree-
nough said. “My expectations
are very high for them. They are
working very hard to meet those
standards.´

“He was back dealing today,´
Hawkins said of Robles. “I think he
fell behind one or two hitters. Tues-
day he was working behind con-
stantly. He was 2-0, 3-1, he didn’t
work ahead much. Today was the
RJ we’ve expected to see.´
Offensively, Robles, Edmiston
and Root led the way. Edmiston
was 3-for-4 with two doubles and
three RBI. Root was 3-for-4 with
a double, two RBI and three runs
scored from the top of the line up,
and Robles was 3-for-3 with an RBI
and two runs scored.
Hawkins was especially pleased
with the offensive outburst because
of how Friday’s games went. Two
wins had him excited, but they left
him wanting more, mostly offen-
sively. They got hits in bunches on
Saturday, but also did some little
things. Robles shot a single into
right ¿eld on a hit and run, sending
the runner to third. The Bulldogs
got some bunts down early to move
runners over, setting up RBI situa-
tions that they cashed in on.
“That was a good, complete
game offensively, which we need-
ed,´ Hawkins said. “We needed
a game like that. Hitting is conta-
gious. Winning is contagious. Once
you get on a little roll...I tell you
what we’re gonna play some good
teams coming up. If we don’t stay
foucused ... They’ll be good. We
better take the positives out of this
win, and get back Monday and get
ready to work because we got a
pretty tough schedule from here on
out. We better stay focused or we’ll
be on the other end of (Saturday’s
result).

22-0 behind a seven-run second in-

Stan¿eld pounded out ten hits
in the opener. Thyler Monkus went
3-for-3 with two doubles and three
runs scored, Tony Flores, who also
pitched, was 2-for-3 with three RBI
and two runs scored, Dylan Grogan
was 2-for-2 with a double, a triple,
two runs and an RBI, and Ryan Bai-
ley had Brody Woods had two RBI
apiece. Woods also doubled, and
Bailey hit a triple.
Flores tossed all ¿ve innings,
allowing three hits, striking out 12
Irish and walking only one on 77
pitches.
In the nightcap, Hermiston really
poured it on, lashing 19 hits and be-
ing helped by seven DeSales errors.
Monkus, Bailey, Woods and Jason
Fitzpatrick each had three hits in
the blowout, and Monkus, Fitzpat-
rick and Woods each had three RBI.
Monkus hit two triples and a double
to pace Stan¿eld.
Woods started on the bump, go-
ing 4.0 innings allowing just one
hit and striking out four. Bailey re-
lieved, tossing a clean inning with a
hit and two strikeouts.
Stan¿eld will play at the River-
side Tournament March 22-23 at

teams that earned top times as
well.
One surprise for Hermiston,
however, was freshman sprinter
Elsa Torres who earned the top
spot in the 200 meter dash with
a time of 27.08 seconds.
On the boys side, senior Josi-
ah Niederwerfer had a solid day
in the distance events, ¿nishing
in the second spot in both the
1500 meter run (4:24.64) and
the 3000 meter run (9:45.39),
while Tre Neal had a big day
in the ¿eld by grabbing the top
spot in shot put (46-07.00), dis-
cus (139-06), and then ¿nishing
in fourth place in the javelin.
Many other area schools put
forth solid performances on the
day, including the Mac-Hi Pio-
neers led by senior Amber Wells’
in the javelin where she tossed
more than 106 feet for an eight-
foot cushion on the next highest
thrower. The Pioneers also had
the discus duo of Landon Warne
and Donald Clark each turn in
top-10 performances, with Clark
earning a personal record throw
of 112-feet and seven-inches.
“We had great performances
all-around today, and we seem to
be heading in the right direction,´
said Pioneers coach John Milleson.
Most of the area teams will
now begin preparations for the
next big meet which is the Mac-
Hi Carnival of Speed on April 1.

ple of impressive pitching and de-

Rams 2-1 behind ¿ve strong innings
from Tyler Sexton and a clutch dou-
ble in the sixth from Daniel Gossler,
and won 4-1 behind four strong in-
nings from Chase Root.
“I’d love to see more hits in a
game,´ coach Lance Hawkins. “But
like I said, two wins from Central
Catholic, I’ll take that any day.´
Hawkins called the sweep a
team win because of the contribu-
tions from many. Sexton was good
in the ¿rst game, and Slade Gritz
came in to slam the door. Gossler’s
RBI double in the bottom of the
sixth game Hermiston all the cush-
ion it would need.
Hermiston jumped on Central
Catholic early in the nightcap, get-
ting three runs in the ¿rst two in-

ple that turned into a home run on a

we pitch well, which I anticipate,
and we play good defense, I think

see this team scoring some more

morrow we’ll double right back and

got the 2016 season off to a fast start
with a couple of wins on Friday.
The Vikings, under ¿rst-year
head coach Dave Dever, beat Du-
fur 15-10 and 5-4 in Umatilla. Cory
Landon had seven hits in the two
games with four of them doubles.
He also picked up a save.
In the opener, Umatilla’s (2-0)
bats were alive, and so were Du-
fur’s. Twenty-¿ve runs were scored
between the two teams, and Uma-
tilla pounded out four extra base
hits in the process. Sophomore

of which was a double, Landon had
two hits, a double and a triple, and
Seth Cranston had two singles and
two doubles. Diego Soto got the

the save.

again was the powerhouse offen-
