wins Geography Bee

River Elementary in Board-
man, won the school-level
competition of the National
Geographic Bee.
The Jan. 20 win gives
Gutierrez a chance to com-
pete for a $50,000 college
scholarship. The school-lev-
el event, where students an-
swered oral questions about

round in the 28th annual
National Geographic Bee,
sponsored by the National
Geographic Society.
Other students who com-
peted at the Windy River
Bee were Benny Sanchez
(reserve champion), Mylee
Quilter (third place), Hai-
ley Daltoso, Daniel Flores,
Stephanie Fudala, Quentin
Johnson, Marco Landeros,
Makaila Lantis and Carlos
Magana.
Thousands of schools

are participating in the 2016
Bee. The school champi-
ons, including Gutierrez,
will take a written test — up
to 100 of the top scorers on
that test in each state will
then be eligible to compete
in their state bee April 1.

Bridal Show.
“Brides are often totally
unprepared for the amount
of planning a wedding takes,
after all, it’s usually a once
in a lifetime event,” said
Stacey Miles, the show’s
producer.
Miles has worked in
the wedding industry since
2008. She owns Uniquely,
I Do and Stone Ridge Event
Center, both in the Tri-Cit-
ies. And, she thoroughly
enjoys working with brides
and wedding professionals.
Producing the show with
Daniell McAfee, owner of
H&M Photography, Miles is
passionate about supporting
wedding professionals and
ensuring brides have the re-
sources available to plan the
wedding of their dreams.
The Eastern Oregon
Bridal Show is Sunday, Feb.
21, from noon to 4 p.m. at
the Hermiston Conference
Center, 415 S. Highway
395. It includes a wedding
fashion show at 1:30 p.m.
Tickets are $5 in advance
or $7 at the door. Brides-to-
be who buy a $5 ticket in
advance can have someone
accompany them for free,
or for $10, she can bring up
to 10 guests with her to the
show.

Jennifer Shimer is a senior at Riverside Junior / Senior High School. In her 4
years as a Riverside Pirate Jennifer has been involved in multiple sports and
clubs. Jennifer has played volleyball, basketball, softball, and cheer. She has also
been an active member and leader in clubs such as Technology Student
Association (TSA), Outdoor club, Key Club, National Honor Society, Future
Farmers of America (FFA), and an ASB class officer. She has also received
numerous scholar athlete awards, all-league recognitions, and will be graduating
with a honors diploma this spring and plans on attending BMCC in the fall.
In her spare time Jennifer has put countless hours towards volunteer activities
through her club and athletic involvement, she has frequently spoken to younger
athletes about the need to follow dreams and not give up on themselves. This
past year she started a formal dress exchange called “Wish Upon a Glitz” where
girls can borrow dresses for prom and homecoming.
