Cougars edge Honkers
ARL,1G721 — 7he Echo
Cougars got hot at the right time
and shot 71.4 percent from the
¿eld in the fourth Tuarter to win
their ¿rst game of the season on
Monday in boys’ basketball non-
league action.
Echo held on for a 49-44 vic-
tory over Arlington with Michael
7hompson leading the way.
7hompson scored 18 points,
pulled in 12 rebounds and
swiped six steals — all game-
highs — for the double-double,
and Carlos Chavez added 10
points in the win.
Anthony Valdez and Javier
Cazares each scored 10 to lead
the Honkers, and Shawn Hauner
added eight points to go with a
team-high nine rebounds, but
Arlington (3-3) made just 5-of-
16 shots in the ¿nal stanza.
Echo (1-4) ¿nished the game
shooting 36.7 percent (18 for 49)
while Arlington ¿nished at 32.6
percent (16 of 49).
BULLDOGS:
Hoffert said. “7he biggest thing
for her is to just get on the Àoor
and say, µ2kay, I can shoot, I can
rebound, I’m bigger than most
people and I can make things hap-
pen.”
Hermiston cruised past Hills-
boro 55-25 Saturday at Armand
Larive Middle Schoo.

force girls into Tuick passes and
hurried passes, long passes that
they don’t want to make because
of the pressure. We know that’s a
key for us to get out and get the
ball and get running.”
Hermiston also shot a ridiculous
percentage that frame. In the open-
ing 13-0 run, Maddy Juul opened
the scoring, then senior guards
Jansen Edmiston and Sara Ram-
riez took over. Edmiston scored
the next ¿ve points, then Ramirez
hit two 3-pointers to complete the
run. At that time, Hermiston was
5-5 from the ¿eld without even
allowing a ¿eld goal attempt from
Southridge. In fact, the Suns didn’t
even have a ¿eld gaol attempt until
the 255 mark, when Haley 7hom-
as missed a layup.
In all, Hermiston was 7-12
from the Àoor and 5-7 from the
3-point line.
“We can shoot the ball at
times,” Hoffert said. “We knew
we struggled the ¿rst couple
games putting the ball int he hole
early, free throws were a little bet-
ter tonight. I think con¿dence is
what we take away tonight con¿-
dence in our shooting, con¿dence
in what we’re doing.”
But the Bulldogs cooled down
the rest of the game. After staring
with the super-impressive 58 per-
cent from the ¿eld as a team, the
Bulldogs shot just 8-32 (25 per-
cent) the rest of the way from the
¿eld and just 1-12 (8 percent) from
3-point range. 7he Bulldogs shot
13-16 from the free throw line,
which in part helped keep distance
between the Suns and Bulldogs.
With the big fourth-Tuarter
lead, 6-foot-1 freshman Jordan
7homas got some minutes at the
end of the game. 7he raw for-
ward went 1-3 from the ¿eld and
scored her ¿rst varsity points on
the game’s last possession. Hof-
fert said he’s been working with
7homas on the inside offensive
game, and she’s already Tuite
sound on the defensive end.
“I think she’s gonna be seeing
three, four, ¿ve minutes at a time,”
closest the Golden Eagles
could get was 10 at 71-
61 and 73-63. Every time
it looked as if they were
starting a run, Stan¿eld
had an answer.
“Stan¿eld did a good
job tonight and they de-
served to win,” Rivera
said.
In the girls game played
immediately before, Stan-
¿eld had no answer for
Mary Stewart and the
Golden Eagles. Nixyaawii
used big second and third
Tuarters to run away from
the 7igers 52-30.
Stan¿eld (3-2) stayed
close after a Tuarter and
trailed just 10-7 with both
teams shooting poorly.
7hey combined to go 5-28
from the ¿eld that ¿rst
frame, but Nixyaawii’s
improved while Stan-
¿eld’s didn’t. 7he Golden
Eagles’ zone gave Stan-
¿eld problems all night.
“We struggled attack-
ing the zone,” Stan¿eld
coach Daniel Sharp said.
“We hadn’t had a lot time
to practice it and sort of
threw it in. 7here were
some good things in that,
and until we ¿gure out
how to do that, people are
gonna zone us to death.”
Stewart ¿nished with
19 points to lead all scor-
ers. Yazzmin Chavez
led Stan¿eld with eight
points.
Nixy led 30-15 at the
break, and Stan¿eld didn’t
come out of the locker
room until two seconds
remained in the halftime

HERMISTON BOYS
NOTCH FIRST WIN
After starting the season with
two blowout losses, the Hermis-
ton boys notched its ¿rst win un-
der interim head coach Dave Ego
Friday night with a 74-57 over
Southridge in its home opener.
“We allowed them to celebrate
for 15 seconds then we talked
about what we didn’t do right,”
Ego said. “And I think the only
way to respond tomorrow night
(in Hillsboro) — I think our legs
will be there because we got some
good rest tonight with all the fouls
— our legs are gonna be there
so it’s a matter of doing the right
things and making things happen
like we did tonight.”
2f¿cials have been making it a
point to allow the offensive play-
ers freedom to maneuver. Both
teams combined to shoot 67 free
throws Friday night.
After an even ¿rst half, Herm-
iston began to pull away in the
second. An Austin Naillon three-
point play pushed the Bulldogs
ahead by ¿ve at 46-41, and the
Bulldog advantage grew to as
many as eight. Southridge whit-
tled the de¿cit down to three at 51-
48 at the end of the third Tuarter,
but the fourth-Tuarter de¿cit grew
to ten, then to 16 and Hermiston
played keep away to ice it.
In its ¿rst two games, the Bull-
dogs (1-2) struggled to score against
the long defenses of Kamiakin and
Hanford. Against, Southridge, how-
ever, it was a different story.
Senior guard Chance Flores,
period. 7he extra talking
to didn’t much help, as
Stan¿eld
scored
just
two points in the Tuar-
ter as Nixyaawii’s lead
increased from 15 to 26
at 43-17. Stan¿eld’s de-
fense pressure forced
Nixy into six fourth-Tuar-
ter turnovers — and 20
in total — though the
de¿cit was too much.
“I think the big difference
between the second and
third Tuarters to the other
ones was we moved the
ball and got better looks,”
Nixyaawii coach Jeremy
Maddern said.
Maddern also said
the turnovers need to be
cleaned up.
“We’re
averaging
about 10, 11 turnovers,
so (20 is) pretty high,”
he said. “Give (Stan¿eld)
credit, though. It was their
defense a little bit. But we
could’ve taken care of the
ball better for sure.”

3, R. McClure 2. 3-pointers — EHS 1-18, AHS 1-5.
Free throws — EHS 13-24, AHS 7-14. Fouls — EHS
15, AHS 16. Fouled out — Patnode (AHS).
who Ego thinks his is best shooter,
took a minute getting going, but
he popped Friday night. He was
held scoreless in the ¿rst Tuarter,
but scored 24 points in the next
three to lead all scorers. His three
3-pointers were the most in the
game — Southridge had just two
as a team — and he shot 7-12 from
the free throw line. Senior point
guard Austin Naillon chipped in
with 19 points and shot 6-7 from
the charity stripe. Ego was happy
to have the production.
“I think we still need to pick
and choose our shots, make sure
they’re the shots we want to take,”
Ego said. “But I felt like from the
beginning of the season (Flores) is
our best shooter. He hasn’t shown
us that until tonight when he shot a
little bit better. 7here are still times
we’re going to the basket. We
want three points, not two.”
Another welcome addition pro-
duction-wise was 6-foot-5 junior
forward Brok Palmer. Palmer had
been playing against some tall
front lines in Hermiston’s ¿rst two
games, and didn’t have much of-
fensive production to show for it.
Friday night he scored ten points
and did solid work on the glass.
“He’s not going up against 6-9
and 6-7, I think that helps the com-
fort zone a little bit,” Ego said of
Palmer. “Brok has skills. As a big
man, he has more skills than any
of our big men — the drop step,
and the different things. He’s just
gotta get more physical for us and
use the big body.”
7he Bulldogs moved to .500
when they slipped past Hillsboro
74-69 at Hillsboro on Saturday.

WRESTLING:
continued from Page A11
match from last season when
a “good scrap,” as Larson
called it, ended prematurely
when Eichner broke his arm.
7his one didn’t go that way.
7he ¿rst round went without
score, and Colbray and Eich-
ner each earned an escape in
the next two rounds to send it
to overtime tied a 1-1. 7he ¿rst
minute-long overtime period
also went scoreless, sending
the uber-competitive match
into a second 30 second-long
period. After both escaped to
earn a point, Eichner Tuick-
ly gained control for two
points, then blocked a rever-
sal attempt from Colbray and
earned two more right before
the horn. He walked away
with his arms outstretched as
his bench went crazy follow-
ing 6-2 decision. Colbray re-
mained on his knees and softly
applauded.
“It’s a tough kid that comes
around and Sam’s gotta know
that he’s gotta train and there
are people our there that can
beat him,” Larson said. “He’s
got areas that he can improve
just like his team can.
“We’re gonna work on
the things that we’re not very
good at. We’re gonna learn
the things that Post Falls was
good at and take that into our
room. I want to attack like
they do. I don’t want to stand
around and wait.”
