As Marlette Oregon
Homebuilding
celebrates
50 years in Hermiston next
month, the manufactured
home production facility will
also be celebrating a new en-
vironmentally friendly certi-
¿cation.
The Hermiston facility
became the ¿fth in the Clay-
ton Homebuilding group to
achieve the ISO 14001 cer-
ti¿cation, an international
standard to reduce waste and
lower energy consumption
during the home manufac-
turing process.
Production manager Tom
Shimp said the some chang-
es had already been made in
order to meet the certi¿ca-
tion standards, while others
will be phased in over time.
“Our goals go out about a
year and a half,” he said. “At
every stage we’ll evaluate if
we hit more or less and ¿g-
ure out why.”
Many of the measures
revolve around reducing
the amount of dust and de-
bris created by cutting all of

the various materials used
in building a home. A new
“bullet tool,” for example,
now allows workers to cut
12 pieces of siding at a time
without creating any dust.
The company will also in-
stall a sophisticated vacuum
system, using hoses attached
to saws and other power
tools to instantly suck up the
dust created by cutting into
the different materials used
to build a home. The facility
has always met OSHA stan-
dards, Shimp said, but the
new measures brought on by
the certi¿cation process are

making the work environ-
ment safer and healthier than
ever for workers.
He said there will also be
a recycling center onsite. Cut
stock left over from cabinet
making and other activities
will be sent to the center,
where the materials will be
sized, marked and sent back
to be used to make smaller
items.
“The goal is to use less,
to put less in the dumpster,”
Shimp said.

ity. Employees make every-
thing from cabinets to doors
onsite.
Shimp said when he start-
ed in the industry more than
20 years ago about ¿ve per-
cent of homes that Marlette
built were customized; now
about 95 percent are.
The facility currently
employs 180 people and
produces 10 homes a week
that are shipped all over the
western United States. The
average employee tenure is
eight years.
Cal Davis, spokesman
for Clayton Homes, said the
company plans to get all of
its facilities across the coun-
try certi¿ed in the next year.
“Our goal as a home
builder is not only to build
a great product, but also to
take care of the environment
we’re working in and to take
care of the worker,” he said.
Facility general manag-
er Glen Alessandri said in a
statement that the new desig-
nation was making environ-
mental awareness a “way of
life” at Marlette Homebuild-
ing.
“From my perspective,
the team is excited about
what we have learned and
been able to accomplish,” he
said.
