Desert Arts brings Second City tour to Hermiston
By TAMMY MALGESINI
Community Editor
Desert Arts Council is
providing an opportunity
to laugh through the hol-
idays as it brings the Sec-
ond City Comedy Tour to
Hermiston.
“I think the holidays
are something people en-
joy and adding the come-
dy piece poking some fun
at our holiday traditions
sounded like good en-
tertainment,” said Mary
Corp, Desert Arts past
president.
The second perfor-
mance of the 2015-16
season features the latest
crop of improvisational
greats from Second City.
Over the years, the famed
theater has ushered many
comedic talents through
its ranks, including John

Tickets are available for the Desert Arts Council presentation
of The Second City comedy tour, who will present Holidazed
& Confused Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Hermiston High School.
Belushi, Gilda Radner,
Dan Aykroyd, Joan Riv-
ers, John Candy, Stephen
Colbert, Steve Carrell and
Tina Fey.
“I love the comedy
that comes out of Second
City,” Corp said. “They
have a long history of
bringing up-and-coming
comedians.”
Hilarious and outra-
geous, Holidazed & Con-
fused is Wednesday, Dec.
2 at 7 p.m. in the audito-
rium at Hermiston High
School, 600 S. First St.
Tickets purchased in ad-
vance are $35 for adults
and $17.50 for students.
Tickets bought at the door
are an additional $5.
Corp said Desert Arts
is trying to diversify their
offerings in an attempt to
boost audience appeal.
The comedy troupe, she
said, should be a draw in
bringing in some younger
audience members
The season also in-
cludes Dancing with the
Hermiston Stars, A Temp-
tations Revue and the
Eastern Oregon Arts Fes-
tival.
For the third year in a
row, a group of Hermiston
stars will team up with pro-
fessionals from the Utah
Ballroom Dance Company
to waltz, salsa and swing
while raising money for
their favorite charities. The
popular event is Saturday,
Jan. 9, 2016.
Barrington “Bo” Hen-
derson, former lead sing-
er of the Temptations,
provides a romantic eve-
ning with unforgettable
Motown hits and cho-
reographed dance steps
during A Temptations Re-
vue. With songs like “My
Girl’ and “Sugar Pie Hon-
ey Bunch,” it offers a per-
fect prelude to Valentine’s
Day. The performance is
Friday, Feb. 12, 2016.
Closing out the season
is the 12th annual Eastern
Oregon Arts Festival May
6-7, 2016, in downtown
Hermiston. It features re-
gional artists, as well as
music, festival food and
kids’ activities.
Ticket packages or
single show tickets can
be purchased at www.
desertartscouncil.com. In
addition, people can buy
Second City tickets at the
Hermiston Chamber of
Commerce, 415 S. High-
way 395, or Hermiston

Shockman receives
governor’s award
Longtime
Hermiston
resident Diane Shockman
recently received the Gov-
ernor’s Elderly Volunteer
Award for Region 5.
The award was present-
ed by Oregon Secretary of
State Jeanne Atkins and
Rep. Greg Barreto Oct. 12
at the Governor’s Volunteer
Awards Luncheon in Sa-
lem.
Shockman has volun-
teered for the Court Ap-
pointed Special Advocate
program for the past 13
years — advocating for
nearly 100 children in the
foster care system in Uma-
tilla County.
“Diane Shockman has
always had a love for the
highest need and most vul-
nerable children,” said Je-
sus Rome, CASA manager
and volunteer manager for
Umatilla-Morrow County
Head Start. “She is very de-
serving of the Governor’s
Volunteer Award and we
couldn’t be more proud of
her accomplishments.”
Shockman also works as
a family advocate for the
Family Support and Con-
nections program, which
is part of Umatilla-Morrow
Shockman
County Head Start. In ad-
dition, she has volunteered
in the local schools and for
youth sports. Shockman is
hopeful that others might
be inspired to step up and
volunteer in their commu-
nities.
Head Start has many
volunteer
opportunities
— from serving as advo-
cates for children to as-
sisting preschool children
in classrooms. For more
information, call Maureen
McGrath, executive direc-
tor for Umatilla-Morrow
County Head Start at 541-
564-6878 or visit www.
