ing,” he said. “They have
to coordinate their feet and
body. It adds a whole new
level of musicianship.”
Another one of the chal-
lenges, said Noah Roberts,
a sophomore trumpet play-
er, is learning to play a lot
louder than he would just
sitting down in an audito-
rium.
Dunsmoor said mem-
bers of the marching band
have been up to the chal-
lenge of performing in
San Diego since the begin-
ning. The group, he said,
memorized their songs on
schedule, which included
participation in band camp
and sectional practices this
summer. Gutierrez said
some of the rehearsals were
grueling.
“It would be 100 de-
grees during band camp,”
she said. “We were dog
tired but kept playing and
marching.”
Brandon Marshall, se-
nior drumline quints player,
said the band works togeth-
er to support one another.
“The camaraderie is like
a family,” he said. “It’s kind
of like a sports team, but
it’s band.”
Steve Anderson, a soph-
omore English teacher,
serves as the assistant di-
rector. A self-described
band geek, Anderson said
the trip will expand the
world for a number of the
students.
“Some haven’t even
been to Portland or the
beach,” he said. “This is
going to be a new experi-
ence. The kids are going to
eat it up.”
With more than 90 stu-
dents and upwards of two
dozen chaperones. The cost
of the trip is a major un-
dertaking. Students have
participated in numerous
fundraisers, dating back
more than a year. To make
a donation, contact Dun-
smoor at 541-667-6100,
Extension 20567.
