POLICE
Crash on Highway 395 sends three to hospitals
By SEAN HART
Staff Writer
Three people were taken
to the hospital, including one
by Life Flight helicopter, fol-
lowing a two-vehicle wreck
in Hermiston on Monday
afternoon.
Oregon State Police
trooper -errad Little said ¿rst
responders were dispatched
to the scene of a wreck at
Highway 395 and Baggett
Lane north of Hermiston at
about 3:50 p.m.
He said witnesses re-
ported a silver Honda car
was waiting in the turn lane
northbound on Highway 395
and then turned left and was
struck by a maroon Scion
traveling southbound on the
highway. Both vehicles came
to rest near Baggett Lane.
Hermiston Fire & Emer-
gency Services personnel
responded and removed the
doors of the Honda to ex-
tricate the driver and one
passenger. Little said the
driver was transported via air
ambulance to an unknown
hospital. The passenger was
transported by ground am-
bulance to Good Shepherd
Medical Center in Hermis-
ton, he said, as was the driver
of the Scion.
Little did not identify the
names or ages of the vehicle
occupants before they were
transported from the scene,
but all three occupants were
women.
There was no indication
that intoxication contribut-
ed to the crash, he said, and
no charges were ¿led at the
scene. He said, however, the
investigation is ongoing.

the driver of the Scion were transported by ground ambulance

Pedestrian hit, killed on 11th Street
An 80-year-old Hermis-
ton man died Friday morn-
ing after he was struck by a
commercial garbage truck.
Hermiston police chief
-ason Edmiston said of¿-
cers responded to the 400
block of Southwest 11th
Street to a report of a pe-
destrian being struck by
a vehicle at 6:38 a.m. Of-
¿cers found Leonardo L.
Leal dead at the scene.
The initial investigation
indicated Leal was attempt-
ing to cross Highway 207,
or Southwest 11th Street,
in the middle of the block
while wearing dark-colored
clothing, Edmiston said. He
was struck by a Hermiston
Sanitary Disposal vehicle
operated by a 32-year-
old male employee from
Hermiston, he said.
Based on preliminary in-
formation, speed is not be-
lieved to have been a con-
tributing factor, nor were
there signs of any type of
intoxicating
substances,
Edmiston said, adding the
driver and company were
forthcoming and coopera-
tive. The driver called 9-1-
1 and reported the crash.
Edmiston said the de-
partment will submit evi-

dence to the crime lab for
analysis, and a full report
will be sent to the Umatilla
County District Attorney’s
Of¿ce for review.
“It’s a very sad day for
the Leal family,” Edmiston
said. “This investigation
will remain open until we
receive lab reports back,
which could be several
weeks.”
Oregon State Police of-
¿cers assisted with recon-
structing the crash scene.

of Transportation assisted
with traf¿c control while
