ROLLOVER
Man dies three days after I-84 rollover crash
By PHIL WRIGHT
Staff Writer
Oregon State Police have
identified five people involved
in a single-vehicle rollover
crash Thursday, Sept. 3, on In-
terstate 84 in Pendleton, includ-
ing one man who was ejected
from the vehicle and later died
from his injuries.
Gary Elkins, 42, of Stayton,
died Sunday while being treat-
ed at Oregon Health & Science
University, Portland. Four oth-
ers were also identified by OSP
on Tuesday — including three
local residents — while author-
ities continue to search for two
men who reportedly fled the
scene.
State police Lt. Mike Turn-
er of the Pendleton command
said, “We have one tentatively
identified,” but that is not 100
percent certain. He also said
it is unlikely the public could

help in this case. The man has
been wanted on a warrant for
some time, Turner said, and so
far has avoided capture.
A 1995 Ford Explorer was
eastbound Thursday afternoon
when one of its tires blew on
Interstate 84 near exit 209. The
vehicle rolled, and five of its
occupants went to hospitals.
The driver was Margarito
Martinez-Sauceda, 58, of Pas-
co, according to state police. A
ground ambulance took him to
St. Anthony Hospital, Pendle-
ton, which transferred him by
air ambulance to Kadlec Re-
gional Medical Center, Rich-
land.

ejected
Gary Elkins,
42, of Stayton. He ended up on
the westbound lanes of I-84.
A ground ambulance also took
him to St. Anthony, and an air
ambulance then flew him to Or-
egon Health & Science Univer-
sity where he later ied.
The crash also threw Clif-
ford Steeley, 43, of Adams,
from the vehicle. He landed in
the center median, and an air
ambulance flew him to Provi-
dence St. Mary Medical Center,
Walla Walla. Patsy Elkins, 40,
of Echo, also suffered injuries,
and a ground ambulance took
her to St. Anthony.
And Vanessa Medelez, 32,
of Hermiston, left the crash
scene on foot and received a
ride to St. Anthony in a private
vehicle, according to state po-
lice. The hospital treated and
released her, and police sub-
sequently arrested her on an
outstanding warrant for a pro-
bation violation. Medelez re-
mains in the Umatilla County
Jail, Pendleton.
Turner also said most of the
crash reconstruction is done,
and so far it looks like the fail-
ure of the tire is the contrib-
uting factor in the crash. He
said preliminary findings do
not indicate criminal behavior,
such as excessive speed, was
involved.
