Barbara Ruth Meade was
born on September 23, 1936,
in Caldwell, Idaho, to parents
Elihu and Rae Bennett. She
died on June 12, 2015, in
Hermiston, Oregon, at
the age of 78 years.
Shortly after her
birth the family relo-
cated to Echo, Ore-
gon. Barbara attend-
ed Echo Elementary
School where she was
a member of the Echo Meade
Marching
Band.
Upon completing el-
ementary school the
family then relocated
to Hermiston, Ore-
gon. Barbara attend-
ed Hermiston High
School and graduated
Meade
in 1954.
After high school
she became employed as a
telephone operator in Pend-
leton, Oregon. Barbara then
attended business school in
Portland, Oregon, where she
also worked part-time in a
local drug store. Having com-
pleted her studies in Portland
she then returned to Hermis-
ton, where she became em-
ployed as a secretary with an
insurance agency.
In 1957, Barbara met Bill
0HDGH RI 6WDQ¿HOG 2UH-
gon, who would become the
love of her life. In the fall of
1958, Barbara and Bill were
married. They then relocated
to Lynnwood, Washington,
where Bill became employed
with the largest volume su-
permarket at that time in the
Northwest. While living in
Lynnwood, Barbara and Bill
started their family with the
birth of their son David, fol-
lowed four years later by the
birth of their son Mitchell.
For ten years Barbara op-
erated a private day care cen-
ter that put an emphasis on a
structured learning environ-
ment. During this time she be-
came a Cub Scout den mother
where she implemented vari-
ous learning programs along
with group leadership. One of
her largest scout projects was
in developing a theme for the
annual banquet that centered
on famous Americans — in
this case, a local mountain
climber from Seattle who

to climb Mount Everest, Jim
Whittaker. Barbara
arranged a meeting
with Mr. Whittaker for
the scouts to tour the
original REI Co-op,
which he managed at
the time. Having taken
photos and measure-
ments of the original
model of Mount Ev-
erest displayed at REI,
her den then recreated
the scale model, which
was then used as the
centerpiece, to much
garnered attention.
In the fall of 1992,
Barbara and Bill were
able to realize the
American dream when they
purchased the supermarket in
Umatilla, Oregon, where she
was a bookkeeper. Having re-
modeled the store and naming
it Columbia Red Apple Mar-
ket, they operated within this
format for the following 12
years. In 2008, they again re-
modeled the store to become
Columbia Harvest Foods.
Barbara again worked in the
same capacity of bookkeeper,
having retired in 2010.
A loving wife, mother and
grandmother, Barbara is sur-
vived by her husband of 56
years, Bill; sons David Meade
and wife Julie of Hermiston
and Mitchell “Russ” Meade
and wife Sara of Umatilla; her
two grandsons, Calvin and
Cameron Meade of Hermis-
ton; her granddaughter Ash-
ley Snow and husband Kyle
